Luis Enrique resigns as Spain manager

The former Barcelona coach is out due to personal reasons

Luis Enrique has resigned as coach of the Spanish national team due to personal reasons. His second-in-command, Robert Moreno, will take charge now.

The former Barcelona coach had already missed the game against Malta due to the same issues.

“We have always respected him a lot and I want to thank him. He has carried himself excellently. There is no reproach and he will always have the doors to the federation open,” said the Spanish Federation’s president Luis Rubiales.

Rubiales went on to say that the problem was “private and could not be managed,” and it was the manager’s decision to quit.

Moreno called his appointment “bittersweet, more bitter than sweet,” due to the circumstances in which he was hired.

Luis Enrique had previously managed Barcelona, Celta Vigo, AS Roma, and Barcelona B. As a player, he was remembered mainly for his performances for Barcelona and the Spanish national team.
