A mess of a match saw the best player in the world and the quickest man in the universe shine bright
Look, there’s no point in talking about just how bad Argentina looked against Paraguay at the Mineirão on Wednesday night. This is what they are: a bad football team badly coached who aren’t the worst team in the continent simply because they have the best player in the world. This is how it’s going to be until Lionel Messi quits for real, so that’s what Barcelona fans have to accept: Messi might have a magical night or two, but his team will never win because it’s not good enough to do so.
(Oh wait, I did talk about how bad Argentina were! You didn’t believe me before, did you?)
Instead of focusing on Argentina’s problems, let’s just appreciate a couple of incredible left-footers who gave us an amazing duel in Belo Horizonte: the first is Messi, who once again tried his hardest to lead the attack and was heavily involved in the very few good moments his team had in the game. He also scored the equalizer, which earned the Albiceleste a point and put them in position to finish in second place, which is amazing and unbelievable.
The other amazing lefty is Miguel Almirón. Major League Soccer fans know him for two years thanks to his incredible couple of seasons with Atlanta United, who were very well coached by former Barça flop Tata Martino and won a championship in their second-ever season in the league. Alongside striker Josef Martínez, Almirón was the main reason why the Five Stripes were far and away the best and most entertaining team in MLS.
He’s now a very exciting prospect for Newcastle in the Premier League, and he gained even more fans on Wednesday night. Seriously, the kid is amazing: his skill, his eye for a perfect pass and also for goal, and obviously, his pace: GOOD GOD THE KID IS FAST. Yes, the Argentina defense did let him run for 60 yards and play a cross for Paraguay’s goal, but his pace getting away from the people chasing him was just absurd.
I’m not saying Almirón is good enough to play for Barça. At least not now. But I’m definitely watching more Newcastle games if this is what he’s doing in the Premier League next season.
