Chile looks really good in their tournament opener, and Brazil is back in action
The final game of the Matchday 1 of the 2019 Copa America took place on Monday night at the Morumbi in São Paulo, with a dominant win by Chile over Japan. La Roja had to survive a good Japanese start, but once they got their first goal on a set piece things became pretty easy for the two-time defending champions.
But there’s some bad news from what otherwise was a pretty good night: Arturo Vidal left the game early in the second half after making a challenge and feeling some pain in his left thigh. As Barcelona fans know very well from watching him last year, Vidal is a warrior and doesn’t stop playing with any little injury, so unless he’s saving himself for the last of the tournament this might be a serious issue. We’ll find out more soon, but for now he’s doubtful for Friday’s game against Ecuador.
Another Barcelona midfielder who made headlines because of his injury is Arthur, who missed Brazil’s tournament opener against Bolivia with a knee/ankle problem, but manager Tite confirmed on Monday that Arthur is back in the starting lineup for Tuesday’s match against Venezuela in Salvador. He will replace Fernandinho and will add better passing and playmaking to the team, and Tite hopes that change will improve on what was a mediocre performance last Friday.
