Barcelona, refusing to take no for an answer, launch another Coutinho bid

The Blaugrana seem to enjoy rejection

Barcelona have launched one final Philippe Coutinho bid according to Sport. Now they’re simply awaiting a response from Liverpool and their owners.

However, the report states that the number doesn’t reach Liverpool’s valuation of Coutinho as it: “does not reach 150 million euros including variables”.

Since Barcelona are on a clock, it doesn’t makes much sense to keep bidding beneath the price that Liverpool have set.

But yet, here we are, with Barcelona reportedly still offering less than Liverpool are willing to sell for once again.

Earlier reports from Sport suggested that Liverpool were waiting on selling Coutinho until they had a deal in place for Monaco’s Thomas Lemar - a deal that will not happen now.

As I have said before, Lemar is the man who I most certainly believe should be the player Barcelona move for.

But it appears that as the deadline grows closer, Barcelona are still hoping the Brazilian magician makes his way to the Camp Nou.

André Gomes staying at Barcelona

The West Ham and Spurs target is staying put

Guillem Balague is reporting that West Ham and Tottenham target André Gomes will be staying at Barcelona. Any deal for Gomes was initially thought to be only possible on a permanent basis, but that changed in the last 24 hours as well.

Sport reports that Barcelona were only interested in loaning Gomes out, and that Tottenham were initially opposed to the idea. However, Spurs came around to the idea of the loan option as feasible and worthwhile.

But apparently Barcelona also changed their minds, and now wish to keep Gomes at the club. Which begs the question of why?

It seems quite obvious that he isn’t in Barcelona’s plans, and unless something drastic changes, it doesn’t seem as though he will be getting much consistent playing time this season.

The best move seemed to be to loan him out, and see what he does playing on a more consistent basis, but, reportedly that won’t be happening and he’ll now stay at Barcelona.

Where are the ‘big names’ Bartomeu?

The transfer window is fast fizzling out

As the close of the transfer window looms into view, the rumors surrounding Barcelona and their potential targets are pretty much grinding to a halt.

Even Sport appear to be giving up hope, having insisted all summer that Philippe Coutinho might arrive, tonight they have been forced to admit that actually, Barcelona might not sign anyone.

Rewind just a month and Josep Maria Bartomeu promised “big name signings” he also vowed to renew Andres Iniesta, but that’s another matter entirely.

Of course Nelson Semedo, Paulinho and Ousmane Dembele have arrived, but none really fit the big-name category, at least not yet.

Just a few days ago Robert Fernandez also got in on the act, saying he hoped to bring one or maybe two new players before the close of the window.

Yet with a little over 24 hours left until the window closes, the options are rapidly running out.

Riyad Mahrez popped up as a potential candidate this morning, before seemingly disappearing off the face of the planet. However, multiple reports have subsequently claimed Barca have no interest whatsoever in the Leicester City star.

Whether that will change if Mahrez is still a Leicester player when the Premier League window closes, and if Barca fail to sign Coutinho, remains to be seen.

Speaking of Coutinho, he appears no closer to a move, transfer request or no, it seems Liverpool’s stance he will not be sold is simply immovable, at least in this window.

There have been other reports today too, that Barca failed with a huge bid for Paulo Dybala earlier this summer, and also rejected the chance to move for Kylian Mbappe.

Fernandez has previously ruled out a move for Jean Michael Seri, which just about leaves Angel Di Maria as perhaps the most likely arrival before the end of the deadline.

A big name perhaps, but not quite what we were expecting.

OFFICIAL: Douglas joins Benfica on loan and David Costas signs for Barcelona B

The Brazilian departs and a defender arrives

It is looking like a quiet end to the transfer window for Barcelona at the moment although the club have confirmed that Douglas will join Benfica on a season-long loan.

The Brazilian has barely featured for the Blaugrana since joining from Sao Paulo in 2014 and spent last season with Sporting Gijon.

Perhaps unsurprisingly Douglas has been deemed surplus to requirements once again and will now spend the current campaign with Benfica.

"Barcelona and Benfica have come to an agreement for the loan of Douglas Pereira, 27, who will play in the Portuguese club during the 2017-18 season.

"Douglas goes on loan to Benfica three years after his Barcelona arrival. He came from Sao Paulo in the summer of 2014 and made his debut in September of that year against Malaga.

"During the first two seasons, 2014-15 and 2015-16, Douglas played eight games, with four draws and four victories, and and a total of eight titles."

Meanwhile, the club have also announced that David Costas will join Barca B from Celta Vigo. The defender has signed a one-year deal with the Blaugrana.

"I am very happy to get to FC Barcelona. I came from playing two seasons in Segunda División A, with Mallorca and Oviedo, and I think that although we are a very young team, I can contribute a lot to the group,” he said.

Rumors: Mahrez to Chelsea, Barcelona turned down Mbappe plus Gomes & Munir latest

The end is in sight but the gossip is refusing to slow down

Mahrez to join Chelsea for £45m

First up we go with news of Riyad Mahrez who appears to have gone AWOL having been given permission to leave Algeria training earlier today.

There have been claims he landed in Barcelona, but over at beIN SPORTS the word is that Mahrez is actually on his way to Chelsea in a £45 million deal.

Their reporter even apparently claims the deal “will happen tonight” which, let’s face it, it will have to what with the transfer window in the UK closing and all.

Barca not interested in Mahrez

Barcelona certainly are not interested in Mahrez, despite all the earlier speculation, that’s according to Marca.

They report Mahrez was not even an option for Barcelona, that the club have no interest in the Leicester star, and that he will indeed go to Chelsea.

Barca were offered Mbappe but went for Dembele

Over at Esport 3 the rumor is that Barcelona were offered Kylian Mbappe earlier in the transfer window, but instead turned down the Monaco forward in favour of Ousmane Dembele.

Apparently Monaco offered Mbappe during the club’s pre-season tour of the United States as they did not want to sell to Paris Saint-Germain or Real Madrid.

However, Josep Maria Bartomeu, who was still trying to keep hold of Neymar, did not want to do anything to upset the Brazilian and was then informed by Pep Segura and Robert Fernández that Dembele was the preferred option.

Rafinha to stay at Barca...for now

Back with Marca, they also report that Rafinha is going absolutely nowhere in this transfer window.

There have been whispers he could leave, but the Brazilian is still struggling with injury which is believed to have put-off would-be suitors.

Rafinha will therefore wait it out to see how he fits into Ernesto Valverde’s plans, and if he doesn’t, may instead move on when the window reopens in January.

Tottenham to sign Andre Gomes on loan

Andre Gomes really is starting to look like he’s heading for the Barcelona exit door with the Mirror reporting he will join Spurs on a season-long loan.

The deal will also include an option to buy, should the Portugal international impress Mauricio Pochettino during his time in north London.

Munir to Marseille?

And finally, we are back to Munir who has been heavily linked with a move to Serie A side Torino, but could in fact be on his way to France with Marseille.

According to beIN SPORTS the club’s sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta is in contact with his former club about a possible deal for the forward.

Tottenham & West Ham to battle for André Gomes - report

The battle for the Portugal international continues

Matt Law of the Telegraph is reporting that Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United are battling it out for André Gomes. The report suggests that Spurs and the Hammers wish to grab Gomes on a season-long loan from Barcelona. Which is in direct opposition to reports that Barcelona only wished to permanently sell Gomes, and that a loan was off the table.

Both cannot be true, so perhaps Barcelona have come to realize that a loan was the only option out there for Gomes. In due time, perhaps Gomes will regain his spark from Valencia and be prepared to take on a bigger role at Barcelona after a year away from the squad.

The downside to loaning him out for a season is that his value drops even more, and Barcelona are stuck with an investment gone bad. The tough decision Barcelona have in front of them could perhaps be made a bit easier if indeed West Ham and Tottenham are trying to snatch the midfielder.

Who should Barcelona sign before the deadline?

Brazil give Coutinho update amid Barcelona speculation

Things have changed for the Liverpool ace apparently

The transfer window is closing soon and while the rumor mill has gone into overdrive, the talk surrounding Philippe Coutinho has gone noticeably quiet.

In fact the talk today has been about Barca reverting to a ‘Plan B’ of either Paulo Dybala, Antoine Griezmann or Thomas Lemar instead of the Liverpool ace.

Coutinho is currently on international duty and Brazil national team coordinator Edu Gaspar has, unsurprisingly, been asked about the Liverpool star.

While it’s difficult to read too much into what he says, he does seem to suggest there are indeed ongoing negotiations between the Reds and Barcelona - something that has been denied in the UK press in recent days.

"It's been 15 days since we called Philippe Coutinho to join our national team. At the time, he was in a very different situation. He was training for Liverpool," he said.

"Even if he was negotiating with Barcelona, he was still training.

"After he came to the national team, something more complex came around in the negotiation and we had to be very careful so we wouldn't get involved in it."

Source | ESPN

Gaspar also confirms that Coutinho is “physically and mentally healthy” despite not featuring for Liverpool so far this season due to injury, although it remains to be seen whether he will feature in the World Cup qualifiers.

Liverpool, meanwhile, are being heavily linked with a move for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain who is expected to undergo a medical tonight ahead of a potential £35 million move, according to multiple reports in the UK.

The Reds have also confirmed that Naby Keita will arrive from RB Leipzig next summer and they also reportedly retain an interest in Thomas Lemar with a meeting apparently scheduled with Monaco today.

While a deal for Coutinho is still looking unlikely at this stage, it seems pretty certain there may still be more twists and turns before the transfer window closes.

Barcelona rumors: West Ham eye Gomes, Iniesta unhappy & Denis, Munir & Vermaelen latest

The gossip is coming thick and fast today

Iniesta unhappy with contract situation

We start off with Andres Iniesta who is not a happy man, according to Diario Gol. In fact he’s fed up and has been confiding his troubles in Sergio Ramos while on Spain duty.

Iniesta has apparently already turned down a contract offer and is feeling unloved at Barca. He’s also worried about how much playing time he will see this season, a big concern ahead of the World Cup.

The report concludes that should the current situation not improve, Iniesta could well do the unthinkable and head away from Camp Nou next summer.

West Ham target Andre Gomes

Another player who could well be off is Andre Gomes with ESPN bringing news that he is being targeted by Premier League side West Ham United.

The Hammers had been linked with a move for William Carvalho but have given up on that plan and are targeting the Barcelona midfielder instead.

Barca are willing to listen to offers for Gomes and there has been interest in his services with Juventus reportedly having already had an offer rejected.

Barca agree Munir deal with Torino

Munir is closing in on a move to Torino after Barca agreed a deal with the Serie A side, according to Sport.

The two clubs are now just waiting for Munir to give his agreement to the move in what will be a permanent deal, possibly with a buy-back option.

Denis Suarez rejects all offers

It wouldn’t be a rumors article without a look at Don Balon and they go with news that Denis Suarez will stay at Barcelona after rejecting offers from elsewhere.

The midfielder had attracted interest from Villarreal, Tottenham and Napoli, but is keen to stay at Barcelona and attempt to become a regular under Ernesto Valverde.

Vermaelen wanted by Crystal Palace & Aston Villa

Thomas Vermaelen is a wanted man, according to AS, with reports that Aston Villa and Crystal Palace are keen on luring him away this summer.

Apparently the defender does have offers from England, but may fancy his chances of seeing more action with Marlon Santos having moved to Nice on a two-year loan.

Seung-Woo Lee heading to Hellas Verona

And finally, we end with reports that youngster Seung-Woo Lee will move to Hellas Verona in a deal worth €1.5 million.

Sport report that there is no place for the Korean at Barca, due to the two non-EU spots being taken by Honduran Anthony 'Choco' Lozano and Brazilian Vitinho.

When does the summer 2017 transfer window close in Spain and across Europe?

A handy guide with deadline day looming

Transfer talk is reaching fever pitch across Europe right now as the transfer window prepares to slam shut with many clubs, including Barcelona, still anxiously hoping to conclude deals.

As such here’s a handy reminder of when the transfer window closes across Europe, with the window open a little later in Spain, and not due to close until late on Friday night local time.

Deadline Day

  • England and Scotland - August 31st 11pm BST
  • France - August 31st midnight CEST
  • Germany - August 31st 6pm CEST
  • Italy - August 31st midnight CEST
  • Spain - September 1st midnight CEST

Why the difference in dates you ask? Well Fifa state there must be two transfer windows each season and allow individual associations to chose when they start and finish.

The Spanish federation announced earlier this summer that their transfer window would close a day later than in previous years, and also a day after those in England, France, Germany and Italy.

A full list of all the transfer windows all over the world, can be found here with Fifa’s transfer window calendar.

Barcelona have brought in Nelson Semedo, Paulinho and Ousmane Dembele this summer but there could still be one or even two more arrivals before the deadline.

Paulo Dybala Will NOT Leave Juventus This Summer - Barcelona Journalist

This despite rumors in Catalonia that Dybala is a Coutinho alternative.

Paulo Dybala will not leave Juventus this summer, says Catalan journalist Gerard Romero. This comes as both Catalan dailies, SPORT and Mundo Deportivo, have floated Dybala as a possible “plan B” if Barcelona do not secure the transfer of Philippe Coutinho from Liverpool.

This means the remaining plan B options put forth by either Catalan daily are: Thomas Lemar from Monaco and Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid.

Lemar’s name is picking up some steam but it’s unclear how hard Barça are going for him. Meanwhile, I really doubt Griezmann leaves this summer.

We’ll see if there’s any other name that starts popping up.

Barcelona step up Lemar interest - report

Plan B may not be a bad idea

Sport is reporting that Barcelona have vastly upped their interest in Monaco’s Thomas Lemar.

Given the growing realization that Philippe Coutinho may not be coming to Barcelona, the wiser heads in the room seem to finally be moving the club’s interest in a different direction.

Lemar would cost Barcelona around 80 million euros, and thus far talks with Monaco and the player are described as being “positive”.

The Blaugrana view also seems to be that despite being just 21 and seen as a hot prospect, he’ll likely be much easier to get than Paulo Dybala or Coutinho. It also goes without saying that he will also be far cheaper than Dybala or Coutinho.

This shift in direction is a positive move for Barça. Getting a younger player to pair alongside Dembele would be a wise move in building for the future at Barcelona.

Lemar has already shown his ability to produce now, but what he could do in the future is just as enticing.

Juventus loan offer for André Gomes rejected - report

Barcelona wish to sell Gomes permanently

Marca are reporting that Juventus and Barcelona have entered negotiations over midfielder André Gomes. Other reports reiterate that Juventus wish a loan deal for Gomes, while Barcelona want to to permanently sell the Portuguese midfielder.

Gomes only arrived at Barcelona last summer from Valencia. Unfortunately, he has failed to make the impact that Barcelona fans hoped he could make in his time thus far at the club.

His lackluster beginnings at Barcelona have led to different transfer rumors this summer, but nothing concrete has taken place yet. Marca reports that Barcelona want €45 million for Gomes, despite paying €35 million, plus a potential €20 million in add-ons, for him last summer.

It doesn’t make much sense that Gomes’ price wouldn’t drop more drastically, despite still being young, he failed to impress at Barcelona and the club is looking to offload him this summer. The summer of inflated transfer fees may have taken ahold of Gomes as well.

Barcelona rumors: Coutinho fee agreed plus Gomes, Di Maria and Munir latest

The gossip is hotting up ahead of deadline day

Barca agree €160m fee for Coutinho

We start today with Philippe Coutinho and a report that Barcelona have in fact agreed a fee that could rise up to a rather eye-watering €160 million for the Liverpool star.

According to Duncan Castles at Yahoo Sport UK, the deal has been done and Coutinho has already been told he will be a Barcelona player this week.

However, Liverpool have also asked Barcelona to delay the completion of the deal, in order for them to find a replacement, with Thomas Lemar or Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain the favourites.

Di Maria pushes for Barcelona move

Meanwhile, another player who definitely wants to move to Camp Nou appears to be Angel Di Maria, who is busy pushing for a transfer, so say Sport.

The Argentine has told Paris Saint-Germain and coach Unai Emery he wants to go, although the Blaugrana are well aware negotiations will be difficult, given the current relationship between the two clubs.

Unai Emery a big fan of Andre Gomes

Of course talks between PSG and Barcelona could be sweetened by the mention of Andre Gomes, if we take a look at Mundo Deportivo.

They report that Emery is a big fan of Gomes and that the midfielder could possibly be used as part of a deal that would bring Di Maria to Camp Nou.

However, the report also mentions a possible loan to Juventus and also claims Gomes could still stay at Barca. In short, anything is possible.

Torino lead Munir chase

Munir El Haddadi is widely expected to seal a move away from Barcelona before the close of the window and he could be off to Serie A with Torino reportedly now in pole position.

According to Sky Sport Italia, Torino have made an offer to take Munir on loan with an option to buy of €16 million.

However, fellow Serie A sides Sampdoria and Roma as well as Malaga and Crystal Palace are also believed to be interested in his services.

Douglas head to Benfica

And finally, Barcelona are closing in on a deal with Benfica which will see Douglas head to Portugal on loan, according to Sport.

Only a few minor details need to be ironed out apparently, including whether the loan will contain a compulsory option to buy at the end of the season.

Suarez could play for Uruguay in World Cup qualifiers

The striker has been out with a knee problem

Luis Suarez could be set to return to action far quicker than expected with Uruguay team doctor Alberto Pan refusing to rule him out of the World Cup qualifiers against Argentina and Paraguay.

The forward picked up the problem in the Supercopa de Espana against Real Madrid and was originally ruled out for four weeks.

However, he has travelled to link up with the national squad and Pan says they will wait to see how he reacts after training.

“I’d never rule out Suárez,” he said

“We still haven’t done the post-training assessment. Based on what we see, we’ll plan tomorrow’s work.

“If he can manage to work with the group and full activity, if he trains normally and with no reaction at all, it’s a big step towards being fully reintegrated and being OK.”

Uruguay face a tricky game against Lionel Messi’s Argentina on Friday in Montevideo. The hosts are currently third in the group, which is an automatic qualification spot, while Argentina are in fifth, one point behind.

Barcelona eye Griezmann, Dybala or Lemar as Coutinho alternatives - report

The Blaugrana are looking at other options apparently

Time is rapidly running out in the transfer window and with Barcelona seemingly making little progress in their hunt for Philippe Coutinho, potential alternatives are now being touted

According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are considering late moves for Antoine Griezmann, Paulo Dybala or Thomas Lemar if they do not land the Brazilian.

Whether Barcelona have any chance of landing Coutinho is still difficult to assess. The player is now fit for Brazil, having not played for Liverpool this season due to injury and having handed in a transfer request. Make of that what you will.

Over in Spain, the Catalan press continue to report negotiations with Liverpool, however in the UK, the view is the opposite, the Reds will not talk to Barcelona, and will refuse to sell.

MD report that with talks currently at a standstill, Barcelona have decided to look elsewhere, yet it is getting late in the day and none of the players mentioned look particularly easy to tempt away.

Antoine Griezmann has already rejected a move to Manchester United, out of loyalty to Atletico Madrid, with the club currently operating under a transfer ban that prevents them registering new players until January.

Dybala has been frequently linked with Barca but said recently he would be happy to stay at Juventus forever if they wanted him.

Which leaves Lemar, who has been linked with Arsenal for most of the summer, until Arsene Wenger admitted recently the deal was “dead” with Monaco reluctant to sell.

Recent speculation has suggested Liverpool have bid for the Frenchman, potentially as a replacement for Coutinho, and now Barcelona are interested too.

Ernesto Valverde has made no secret of the fact he wants more signings, Robert Fernandez has said he is hoping to bring in one or two, yet we still seem no closer to knowing who, if anyone, may come in.

OFFICIAL: Marlon Santos leaves Barcelona for Nice

The defender will spend at least next season in Ligue 1

Barcelona have confirmed they have agreed a deal for Marlon Santos to join Ligue 1 side Nice on a two-year loan deal.

The defender will now head to France, although Barcelona have the option to recall him after 12 months.

The Blaugrana only signed Marlon permanently back in June after a loan spell and he looked to have a big future at the club after featuring for the first team at the end of last season.

However, he clearly does not feature in Ernesto Valverde’s plans for next season and will hopefully play regularly at Nice and develop his obvious potential.

Marlon’s move also suggests that Thomas Vermaelen will be the club’s fourth choice centre-back for the coming season.

It’s perhaps not the most obvious departure this summer, but hopefully Marlon can gain regular playing time and come back next summer and fight for a first-team spot

All the best for the season Marlon!

Barcelona Are Playing a Dangerous Game with Philippe Coutinho

It’s unclear if Liverpool will consider selling and the transfer window closes soon.

The Philippe Coutinho transfer saga goes on. We heard murmurs that Liverpool were finally softening their stance towards denying all offers from FC Barcelona, but now the winds are blowing the other way.

Diario SPORT says the transfer is “complicated” and Liverpool are not listening to offers. Mundo Deportivo says pretty much the same thing, Liverpool are not being flexible at all.

But it’s not just the Catalan papers, the English press has been saying that Liverpool will dig their heels in even at the prospect of ridiculous fees.

Still, the suggestion is that Barcelona will continue working on this transfer until the last day, which is quite a risk.

FC Barcelona need at least one more signing, possibly two. If they’re only focused on Coutinho, they might not get anyone.

Angel Di Maria and Leon Goretzka have been mentioned as possible signings, though neither really comes close to the magnitude of Coutinho. Shouldn’t Barcelona have a couple more backup plans?outinho. S

Let’s hope they’re ready to pull the trigger elsewhere if the Coutinho move falls through. Perhaps there’s still a chance of bringing Jean Seri from OGC NIce or Iñigo Martinez from Real Sociedad, signings that were considered but ultimately abandoned?

No, Neymar Did Not Try to Convince Philippe Coutinho to Stay at Liverpool

The young forward will play for the B team.

FC Barcelona have officially signed Jose Arnaiz from Real Valladolid. The 22-year-old winger was bought for 3.4 million euro, which could go up to 4 million if he makes the first team or plays for Spain.

Arnaiz signed a three-year deal, with the option to extend it for two more years. The release clause starts at 20 million for the initial deal, and goes up to 40 million for the two additional years if they are taken up. He will play for Barcelona B, at least initially.

He was considered Valladolid’s best player as the Pucela finished seventh in the second division.

Coutinho's injury caused by stress over his future, says doctor

The Liverpool star is said to be anxious about changing club

Barcelona target Philippe Coutinho is back in training for Brazil and ready for action, with his recent injury caused by emotional stress over his future, apparently.

The Brazilian is yet to feature for the Reds this season, apparently due to a back injury, but looks set to play a full part for his national side after joining up with the squad.

Coutinho missed Liverpool’s 4-0 win over Arsenal on Sunday, with Klopp insisting pre-match he was still not fit, but now seems to have made a very quick recovery.

According to Brazil doctor Michael Simoni, his injury was due to stress over his future with Coutinho having had a transfer request rejected by Liverpool, amid interest from Barca.

“Coutinho back problem? He is okay now. The back problem was a matter of stress, it was something emotional,” he said.

“The uncertainty about his future led him to feeling stressed. Everything is solved now.

'Coutinho and I are friends since years, I always treat his medical cases. All he needed was someone to give him a pep talk.”

Source | Esporte

Simoni also said that he had discussed the future with Coutinho and admitted the player is worried about what will happen.

“He's a bit anxious about the possibility of changing club.” he added.

“Of course we talked about this possible transfer, about the things that are in his heart right now.

“His back pains, in my opinion, are explained by this anxiety. Muscular tension normally does that.”

Source | ESPN Brasil

Whether Barcelona will actually land Coutinho remains very much unknown as conflicting reports continue to circulate.

While some outlets have reported Liverpool are now willing to negotiate, others claim the club’s stance has not changed at all.

However, the club have today, confirmed they have agreed a deal to Naby Keita, although the midfielder will not arrive until next summer.

Di Maria to Barcelona played down by Mendes

The rumors are simply not true, apparently

Agent Jorge Mendes has played down rumours Barcelona are attempting to bring in Angel Di Maria from Paris Saint-Germain before the close of the transfer window.

Robert Fernandez revealed yesterday the club are hoping to sign one or two more players before Thursday’s deadline, following the capture of Ousmane Dembele.

Di Maria and Philippe Coutinho have been the players most frequently linked with Barca in recent days with speculation Mendes could act as a middleman in a deal for his former client Di Maria.

However, the agent who reportedly met with Barcelona for transfer talks recently denied this was the case.

Asked by journalists about the Argentine as he prepared to depart Barcelona he told Marca: "It is not true what you are publishing."

So if not Di Maria, then who was Mendes talking to Barcelona about? Well, the obvious answer seems to be Andre Gomes, who is represented by Mendes.

Reports have suggested that Gomes will head to Juventus this summer, with Barca willing to sell after an underwhelming first season at Camp Nou.

Barcelona Youngster Marlon Set For Nice Loan - Report

Santi Ovalle reports for Cadena SER

Young defender Marlon Santos is set to go out on loan to OGC Nice tomorrow, according to Santi Ovalle reporting for Cadena SER. The initial agreement is for the Brazilian to be at the French club for two seasons. After the first, Barça could get him back. There is a buy option valued at 20 million euros.

At the moment it seems unconnected to a possible transfer for Jean Seri, which Barcelona seemingly ruled out today.

This loan could potentially mean Thomas Vermaelen will be Barcelona’s #4 CB after Gerard Pique, Samuel Umtiti and Javier Mascherano. Yerry Mina, who plays for Palmeiras, could reinforce the defense as well if he arrives in January.

Dembele isn’t feeling the pressure after Barcelona move

The new signing is saying all the right things

Barcelona’s newest signing Ousmane Dembele say he is not feeling the pressure despite his huge price tag. He talked about what it was like to come to Barcelona, playing alongside Lionel Messi, replacing Neymar and more during his press conference.

Despite signing for the second highest fee in football history, Dembele is taking a positive approach to the move.

Indeed, the wonder of playing for Barcelona alongside Messi and Suarez was the main narrative of his presser, as well as framing his entrance into the club on a positive note as opposed to making about himself as a Neymar replacement.

“I’m very happy to play at the best club in the world and with the best players in the world. learn from the best players in the world like Suarez and Messi.

Since I was eight years old I watched Barca games and it became a dream, I watched their games, how they played, they won many titles, Champions Leagues, leagues, something I liked a lot.”

"[I feel] no pressure, no nerves. It’s the transfer market going a bit crazy. But I’m here to do my work well on the pitch and help the team," Dembele added.

“I don’t feel pressure from these numbers, in fact more than pressure it’s a pleasure to be here.”

“There’s a big difference between Neymar and me. Neymar is one of the best players in the world, I am very young. I’m improving day to day, trying to improve and to grow.

“I’m not here to replace Neymar. They needed a player in this position, they called me and I will give everything for this club. I’m 20, I have a lot to learn and that’s why I’m at this big club.

“It’s an honour and a pleasure to play in a team with Lionel Messi, I want to learn from him. He’s a great player, the best player in the history of football and I’m happy to grow in this team.”

Keep up the positive pressers Dembele, and let the work on the pitch do the talking.

Philippe Coutinho Back to Fitness As He Pushes His Move from Liverpool to Barcelona

The midfielder has “recovered”

Philippe Coutinho has been declared match fit today as he is with the Brazilian national team. The player hasn’t taken part in any of Liverpool’s opening matches due to a back injury, although it is widely assumed it’s an excuse to more or less go on strike to try to force a move to Barcelona.

Seeing as the transfer window closes before players travel back from their national teams, it makes no sense for Coutinho to continue faking injury (assume he was faking.) He will either be with Barcelona, or stuck with Liverpool. In either case a fake injury wouldn’t help him.

Reports are swirling that Coutinho is in South America with the intention of not coming back to England and completing his move. Barcelona are thought to be offering a king’s ransom for the player to leave the Reds, who have declared him nontransferable.

Fernandez hoping to sign two new players for Barcelona before the close of the transfer window

We could be set for a busy few days on the transfer front

Barcelona sporting director Robert Fernandez says he is hoping to bring in one or two new players before the close of the transfer window on Thursday.

Fernandez was speaking at a press conference as Barcelona unveiled new signing Ousmane Dembele who has arrived from Borussia Dortmund.

Speculation claims Barca are still in for Philippe Coutinho, with reports today claiming Liverpool have agreed to sign Naby Keita with the midfielder set to arrive next summer. However, whether that will have an impact on the club’s stance towards Coutinho, or not, remains to be seen.

Speaking about the transfer market, Fernandez was coy about the club’s targets but did say that he does want to further strengthen the squad

"We are negotiating with certain players about joining," Robert in response to a question about Coutinho.

"We need things sorted quickly as there are not many days left of the transfer window.

“We hope things progress well and that we are able to present another player this month.

"We're working on a number of possibilities. We have to wait. We know the type of player we want and the profile we need to improve the team and we will push until the last possible moment.

"My intention is that one more player comes in and, if it's possible, even two."

Fernandez also ruled out a move for Jean Michael Seri but, interestingly, refused to rule out Angel Di Maria joining from Paris Saint-Germain.

It promises to be an interesting few days before the window slams shut, there still seem to be a number of big deals that could happen across Europe, and hopefully Barca will see some more new arrivals. Let’s just hope they’re the right ones.

Seri explains why Barcelona move fell through

The midfielder has blamed Nice for the deal collapsing

One of Barcelona’s many transfer targets this summer has been Jean Michäel Seri. However, the midfielder saw a move to Camp Nou reportedly collapse at the last minute as the Blaugrana pulled out.

In a recent interview, Seri discussed how the talks breaking down made him feel, as well as talking about how moving to Barcelona would have been a dream come true.

“I feel very bad. I'm not going to lie to you, I'm really hurt. For me, football has always been a celebration, a joy,” said Seri.

“Ihave not played this weekend with Nice because I do not have my head set on football. My dream of going to Barça has been broken and this, for me, is terrible.

"The conversations between the two clubs went from bad to worse. As far as I can tell, I've not left Nice due to financial reasons.

"After the [Champions League playoff against Napoli] I met with Barcelona's directors for more than an hour and they didn't tell me anything about not going through with signing me. I went home really happy; then the next day I read the news. I was stunned.

"I went to the Nice offices to see the board and find out what happened. I exploded! The walls shook. They didn't say anything to me, they didn't look me straight in the eye. They had promised me one thing, but didn't keep their word and asked for more money."

Source | Mundo Deportivo

There is a chance Seri could still leave Nice this summer, and he admits he is interested in joining a bigger club.

"I want to be optimistic and think there are still options, that the clubs will sit down and talk calmly again and reach an agreement. We're not just talking about any club where you go just for money. I want to join one of the big European clubs, like Juventus, PSG, Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund, Liverpool...

"For example, Roma have made several offers. I have spoken many times to Monchi, but the transfer didn't happen for financial reasons. Monchi got tired of the Nice board! Roma is a good option, but nothing like Barca!"

Source | Mundo Deportivo

Seri’s disappointment at the move collapsing is plain to see and Robert Fernandez has since completely ruled out the midfielder moving to Camp Nou.

"I am very happy to be here. It has always been my dream to be at Barça" Ousmane Dembélé told the club media shortly after arriving in Barcelona. "And now I’m here I’m very happy to have achieved my dream. This is the best club in the world with the best players in the world ... By the Numbers: Alavés 0-2 FC Barcelona | FC Barcelona
Leo Messi now has 351 in his all-time Liga account. Only one other player has ever scored that many goals for the same club in one of Europe’s major football leagues and the Barça star is now closer than ever to catching him: Gerd Müller of Bayern Munich, who scored 365.

Barca confident on Coutinho - report | Football Espana
El Mundo Deportivo believe the English club will eventually let the former Inter playmaker leave following his transfer request, but don’t think any deal will be possible before the end of the week, when the transfer window closes.

Jean Michael Seri blasts Nice after Barcelona move collapses | ESPN
However, Nice general manager Julien Fournier said last week that the Ligue 1 club "haven't set a price for Seri" and the player has accused club bosses of breaking their word and demanding more money. "I feel very bad," Seri, who sat out Nice's 3-0 loss to Amiens at the weekend, told the Catalan newspaper. "I'm not going to lie to you, I'm really hurt. For me, football has always been a party, a source of joy.

Training schedule for international week | FC Barcelona
As every season, no sooner has the league started than things are interrupted by an international break, with some absolutely crucial World Cup qualifying matches for the bulk of the Barça squad. But for those that are not travelling with their national teams, it’s training as usual with Ernesto Valverde at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper – until Thursday at least, after which they’ll be getting the rest of the week off.

First training session of the week without players on international duty | FC Barcelona
Ernesto Valverde had eight senior players involved in the session at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper: Paco Alcácer, Sergi Roberto, Nélson Semedo, Denis Suárez, Aleix Vidal, Marlon, Munir and Douglas. Their focus will be on the derby against Espanyol after the international break. Goalkeepers Iñaki Peña and Sergi Puig were also involved.

What will Ousmane Dembele bring to Barcelona?

Time to get excited because this kid is something special

Ousmane Dembele officially begins life as a Barcelona player today as he undertakes his medical and is presented to the world and the club’s Twitter account has already gone into overdrive dubbing it #DembeleDay.

But they are right to get excited and so should we, as Barcelona fans can now look forward to the skills the tricky winger will add to the front line.

At the young age of just 20, Dembélé showcased exactly what he could do in the Bundesliga last year, scoring six goals and creating 63 chances for Borussia Dortmund.

Six goals may not sound a lot, but Opta neatly highlight below just how much potential this boy has.

But it is not just goals that Dembélé will bring, it is assists too, and that is exactly what is needed, particularly following the departure of Neymar.

Replacing the Brazilian is all but impossible but one of the young French star’s main assets last season was his relationship with striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

In fact, Dembélé provided 10 assists for the Dortmund forward last season, as Squawka show, that’s more assists for any team-mate in Europe’s top five leagues. Now just imagine him assisting Lionel Messi and Lionel Suarez. Excited now?

Dembélé is versatile too, although he is right-footed, he is expected to take Neymar’s place on the left wing which will allow him to cut inside and go for goal.

The Frenchman can therefore play on the left of a 4-2-3-1 alongside Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi with Luis Suarez as the sole striker, or on the left on of a 4-3-3 with Suarez and Messi.

Of course being right-footed means he could also play on the opposite flank, with Messi moving to the middle, or Dembélé could even feature as a central striker if needed.

In short, he gives Ernesto Valverde great attacking options, which have seemed in short supply so far this season despite a winning start.

Dembélé’s arrival, also adds a fresh injection of youth and bring some much-needed young legs into the squad.

One of the biggest problems with the current squad has been the issue of age. Those issues have been addressed in defence with the signings of right-back Nelson Semedo this summer and Marlon Santos and Samuel Umtiti last year.

The midfield has also benefited from the return of Denis Suarez and Sergi Roberto’s role in the midfield.

Looking to the future, with Messi and Suarez now both 30 years old, Barcelona needed a foundational young player who they could plan the future around.

While still only 20 years old, Dembélé will surely only improve in the coming years and provide Barcelona with a new superstar who can dominate for the next decade.

Perhaps most crucially, particularly in light of this summer, Dembele has spoken openly about his love for Barcelona and, as the club have shown, the kid even has a Barcelona cover on his phone!

Ultimately, last season Dembélé proved that he had the ability to influence games with his speed, trickery, and unselfishness. But as we move forward, fans have to be careful with their evaluations of the young player.

While Dortmund is a giant European club, the expectations that come with being a Barcelona player are almost unmatched by any other club in the world.

In order for Dembélé to succeed this year, and in the future, confidence is needed and that must be something that fans help him find.

The process of learning the Barcelona style and fitting into a new league and a new country can be difficult, but with the right mentality and preparation, the young French international can prove that the loss of Neymar can be overcome.

Liga Watch: Real Madrid Drop Points, Real Sociedad Top of the League

Barcelona are in second place due to a tiebreaker

Valencia earned a great point against Real Madrid, Leganes won again, and Real Sociedad turned on the style. Those were the big stories around the league on the second matchday.

Real Madrid dropped points for the first time this season despite Marco Asensio’s brace. Both teams had chances galore, but in the end the score ended 2-2.

Leganes got their second win of the season out of two, this time against Espanyol, by the score of 1-0. Martin Mantovani scored the only goal of the match. Leganes have won their first two games 1-0, good enough for third place at the moment.

Moving onto first place is Real Sociedad, who got an impressive 3-0 victory over Villarreal. Club legend Xabi Prieto marked his 500th appearance with a goal. Willian Jose and Juanmi scored the other two.

Barcelona and La Real are both on six points and a +4 goal difference, but it is the Basques who are theoretically top of the league thanks to having scored six goals to the Catalans’ 4. That’s theoretically because the first tiebreaker is head-to-head results, and we haven’t gotten those yet.

Ousmane Dembele is the Best Choice for Post-Neymar Barcelona

The price is ridiculous, but the player is a gem

Ousmane Dembele became the second-most expensive player ever as he signed for a club record fee from Borussia Dortmund to FC Barcelona. The winger cost a staggering 105 million euro, plus 42 million in variables.

It’s hard to know what’s expensive anymore in this crazy inflated market. That said, it’s true that Dembele’s price is unusually high. Likely, this happened because of circumstance. Barcelona have so much cash from the Neymar sale, and the transfer window is closing soon. Their negotiating position wasn’t the strongest.

Yet, if we look past the cost, there’s a lot to be excited about. Dembele is just 20 years old but had a breakout season last year at Dortmund, where he was one of the best players in the Bundesliga.

Possessing great speed, dribbling skills, and ability to create chances, Dembele has a lot of skills to make an immediate impact at the Camp Nou. However, he needs to improve a few things to really be a complete player. His defensive contribution is adequate but could be better, while he also doesn’t score much. He also has a tendency to lose the ball that he needs to correct. His game so far has been suited to a counter-attacking team, and it remains to be seen how he adapts to Ernesto Valverde’s style of play.

Still, at only 20 years old, Dembele represents both an improvement in the present and a promise for the future. There probably wasn’t a better player of his age, and he fits FC Barcelona’s need for a wide forward. For that reason, the Catalans accepted paying extra.

The Blaugrana still need one more signing at least, and they hope it’s Philippe Coutinho of Liverpool. As far as replacing Neymar in the lineup, however, they’ve got it covered. That’s not to say Demebele will immediately make up for his absence, but for the moment, he’s the best choice for Barcelona.

Barcelona wins slow game to get the three points.

Not an awesome performance but the objective was achieved.

I understand that as a new coach Valverde must try new players in new formations, therefore I understand how frustrating it must be for us supporters to see many of the same inane decisions that proved devastating in the last campaign. Yes, rotations are necessary, regardless of whether it is the first few games of the season or the last remaining matches. Yet it is very grating to see the same players in the same schemes stubbornly attempting to elicit a different, positive result while playing much of the same underwhelming football. So, yes, I understand it is necessary to see what personnel you have on the bench, and how they can be best utilized when needed, but there must be a smarter way to go about it.

If you are going to experiment then why not go almost wholesale with it? How much do you truly believe you are going to affect results when you play the same defense, the same mid, but only change the players flanking Messi? Yes, change here meaning one player that left and one that was injured. The problem last year was not the forwards. In fact, the trio was quite possibly the only thing keeping Barcelona competitive through many, many games. Therefore, I think it isn’t farfetched for many to be upset when our team was literally the same as the majority of last season, but only with the veritable downgrade in quality from Neymar and Suárez to Deulofeu and Vidal. Nothing against those players in particular, which might actually perform better in another system, or against experimenting with different rotations, just with expecting different results than those obtained before.

Irish Goat’s Gamboling Goleadores!

1st Goleador: Messi

No other way to say it: Messi saved Valverde’s bacon. Despite having three forwards, Leo was basically the only legitimate attacking threat for most of this game. After the first half, there was that pervading sense of dread of Messi being stuck on goal 349 for much longer, and having one of those dry spells brought on by trying to break a record, which for some reason seems to happen often. Fortunately, he found the back of the net in the second half twice and gave the team the second 2-0 victory in a row. Hopefully Valverde can provide Messi with better options moving forward, as you could see that the number ten seemed to be somewhat frustrated.

2nd Goleador: Sergi Roberto

Not the best position he plays in, and therefore hard to choose him after seeing how well he can play if used properly, but I truthfully liked the way he played, and I also don’t know who else should have been chosen over him. MaTS was solid but didn’t have to do much; didn’t like how Jordi played as he seemed really wasteful; Umtiti was solid but didn’t play his best game; Piqué continues to be disappointing to me; Iniesta had a solid first half but disappeared for much of the second until he was subbed; Busquets good but nothing to write home about; Rakitić very slow; Deulo and Vidal on another level, but not in a good way.

3rd Goleador: Denis

I’ve liked him twice now coming off the bench and would like to see him get the start. It is basically now or never, as you know Dembélé and Suárez will lock down those starting spots. We shall see what happens, as it is only the second game of the season.

Visca Barça!

PSG Planned Neymar Transfer For Years, Barcelona Promised to Sell Lionel Messi - Report

The TV show Téléfoot has unveiled behind-the-scenes information from the mega transfer

Qatar had been planning Neymar’s transfer since it become involved with Paris Saint-Germain in 2012, while Barcelona had promised to sell Lionel Messi, according to the French TV program Téléfoot.

The report says PSG’s sporting director at the time, Leonardo, had targeted Neymar when the young star was still playing at Santos in Brazil. No concrete offer was put on the table, as PSG thought they had no chance against the big teams trying to lure Neymar, notably Chelsea and FC Barcelona.

Neymar joined Barcelona in 2013, but PSG did not quit in its attempt to buy the Brazilian. Téléfoot reports that the Barcelona board promised Neymar they would sell Messi in the future to Manchester City, to clear the way for the Brazilian to be the leader of the team, something that didn’t happen. Reports of Neymar’s dissatisfaction of being #2 behind Lionel Messi became an issue, despite their good personal relationship.

Last year, Manchester United was ready to pay Neymar's release clause, with the player agreeing to join the English club. At the last moment, FC Barcelona managed to persuade the Brazilian to extend his contract, giving him 20 million euros net each year and increasing his release clause from 190 to 222 million.

Barcelona wanted to increase his release clause even more, but his father blocked the request. Antero Henrique joined as PSG sporting director, and he got in touch with Pini Zahavi, a close advisor to Neymar. After PSG were eliminated in embarrassing fashion last season by Barcelona in the Champions League, club Presidetnt Nasser Al-Khelaifi announced that PSG would make a statement signing in the summer.

Téléfoot reports that Neymar’s signature was not guaranteed until the last moment, and players from both clubs lobbied for him to play with them next season. Marquinhos, Lucas Moura, and Dani Alves chatted with Neymar, trying to get him to join the Parisian club. Messi was the one who did the most lobbying for Ney to stay in Catalonia.

The decisive moment, says the report, was the meeting this past summer. The Barcelona board told the player they did not want to pay him a 26 million loyalty bonus. This angered Neymar and his father, and made them choose PSG.

Liverpool budge and start negotiations with Barcelona over Coutinho - report

The talks may bring something productive

There are just days to go now until the close of the transfer window but Sport is reporting that Barcelona and Liverpool have finally started to make positive steps in negotiations over Philippe Coutinho.

Apparently the negotiations to this point haven’t really been as productive because Liverpool still believed Coutinho could come back and play for the Reds.

The report from Sport suggests that they are now past that point and are looking to Bayern Munich’s Renato Sanches as a replacement for Coutinho.

Once they have signed Sanches, they’ll be willing to officially offload Coutinho to Barcelona for around €150 million, apparently.

However, as usual with Coutinho talks thus far, there are conflicting reports around the world. Sky Sports’ Guillem Balague reports that no progress has been made and the status is the exact same.

No changes on Coutinho. Liverpool don't sell, FCB preparing offer, Catalan media being optimistic (without reason)

Guillem Balague

Much like it was with Dembele, things could start to progress quickly and Coutinho could be a Barcelona player before long, or this may continue to stall out and nothing will happen. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Signing Dembele a start, now Barcelona must reclaim their identity

Valverde wants more Barcelona signings before transfer window closes

The boss is hoping the Blaugrana strengthen further

Ernesto Valverde says he is hopeful Barcelona can further add to their squad before the close of the transfer window on August 31.

The club were given a huge boost on Friday after they announced the arrival of Ousmane Dembele from Borussia Dortmund.

Huge speculation continues to swirl around the club with potential moves for Philippe Coutinho and Angel Di Maria still being widely reported.

Speaking after Barca’s 2-0 win over Alaves on Saturday, Valverde says he hopes the club can bring in some more new players.

"We hope that when August 31 arrives and the transfer market closes we have a more competitive team," Valverde said.

"I will work with the players I have got, but we hope to have an even better team and we're open [to signings] if we have a chance, that's clear."

It’s difficult to see at his point just who might be arriving. The Coutinho rumours continue but Liverpool have, and remain, adamant he will not be sold, making a deal in this window look highly unlikely.

Likewise, it’s hard to see a move for Di Maria happening, particularly given the relationship between the two clubs after the Neymar deal.

Other speculation has focused on Willian and Lorenzo Insigne but it’s hard to see if there is any truth in those reports at all, or if it’s simply a case of silly season as the close of the window looms into view.

We await updates...

Will Barca sign anyone before the transfer window shuts? Who should they bring in? Let us know your thoughts below!

Alavés 0-2 Barcelona, 2017 La Liga: 3 Things We Learned

A few lessons from Barça’s win at the Basque Country

Barcelona won their second straight La Liga match on Saturday, defeating Alavés thanks to a brace from Lionel Messi. It wasn’t the best performance ever from the Blaugrana, but it was solid enough to give them an easy win.

Here are a few takeaways from what we saw from the Catalan giants against Alavés:

1 - Barça must play faster

The game against Alavés was really boring at times, and it was all Barça’s fault. The Blaugrana had the ball all game, but they failed to create really good scoring chances because their passing was too safe, too short, too easy. Very few players made runs in behind the defense, and the pace only picked up when Lionel Messi had the ball and ran the Alavés backline to try and create something.

There’s a good argument to be made that Ernesto Valverde is looking to change the style of play we saw the final moments of Luis Enrique’s reign when the team was chaotic and unbalanced, and such a big stylistic shift will take months of training. We’re still in the beginning stages of Valverde’s work, so it’s natural that the team looks slow and boring now. Things will improve with time, and we’ve seen some positive signings in every game so far except from the Spanish Super Cup.

The problem is that the second game after the international break is against Juventus, and their defense is nearly impossible to break down unless you have a quick, sharp attacking machine. Valverde cannot build a quick, sharp attacking machine in two weeks with all the players away with their national team, so we won’t see a faster pattern of play from Barça when the Champions League starts. And that’s a concern.

2 - Valverde is looking at his whole squad

99% of Barça fans went absolutely nuts when they saw the lineup, and they were still angry even when they were proved wrong and Aleix Vidal was actually playing on the right wing, which is the position every Barça fan wanted to see Vidal playing. Barça fans going overreacting to lineups is one of the best things on the internet, but it’s also one of the worst. Every Valverde choice so far has been wrong in the eyes of the supporters, but he’s been the coach for less than two months and has only seen his team play four competitive games.

Facing a weak team away from home was a good chance for Valverde to shake things up a bit and have a look at his squad. Nélson Semedo will probably start against Juventus, but Valverde thought it was best to see for himself how well Sergi Roberto would play at right-back just to have a complete picture before choosing his starter in the position. Denis Suarez is clearly the right partner for Messi up top until Luis Suárez and Ousmane Dembélé are available, but Valverde wanted to see how Vidal and Gerard Deulofeu would do as the supporting cast for his best player up front.

Rotations are part of the job of any coach, especially the new ones. Valverde can see his players in different positions during training, but only watching them on the pitch will help him make decisions. And at the end of the day, Barça beat Alavés pretty comfortably despite all the tests. When the really tough games come Valverde will probably choose the best players for each position, but he needs to find out who they are first.

3 - Barça really need Ousmane Dembélé

As hard as Deulofeu, Denis and Paco Alcácer try, they will not offer too much in terms of danger on the wing. They’ll be fine for Copa del Rey and smaller La Liga matches, but when push comes to shove, it’s Dembélé who will be the real threat. The massive price tag placed on him means he’ll need time to adapt and a major pressure to deal with, but his talent is undeniable and his potential is through the roof. It’s pretty clear that Dembélé is a lot better than every wing option currently in the squad even though he hasn’t played yet, and we hope he settles quickly.

If he doesn’t, we’ll suffer through a few more months of Deulofeu, Denis and Paco giving their best, but not being quite good enough to replace Neymar. Please be good, Ousmane. Please.

Alavés 0-2 Barcelona, 2017 La Liga: Match Review

Recap of the action from Barcelona’s away win against Alaves

Barcelona continued their perfect start to the La Liga season, winning their first away game by the score of 2-0. It was not an easy win against last season’s Copa del Rey finalists, who defended bravely, but Barcelona’s perseverance ultimately paid off, with Lionel Messi scoring both goals of the match.

Ernesto Valverde presented a couple of surprises in the starting lineup. The first was the return of Sergi Roberto to right-back despite Nelson Semedo’s excellent La Liga debut against Real Betis. Another surprise also came on the right side of the pitch where Aleix Vidal played on the wing.

Action started quickly at the Mendizorrotza as Alaves immediately exposed Jordi Alba on the left side of defense before sending a dangerous free kick on target, but the shot officially didn’t count because of a foul by the hosts that gave the ball to Barcelona. And from that moment on, Barcelona dominated possession and play.

Most of Barcelona’s attacking play came down the right wing. Vidal, especially, combined excellently with his teammates in the early going, showing good vision, but getting a clear look on goal proved difficult. Fernando Pacheco had to face the numerous shots, he accumulated four saves in the opening 15 minutes, but all of them were more or less right at the goalkeeper.

Despite the dominance on the pitch, Barcelona had to remain alert for the occasional Alaves counter attack. Alaves proved dangerous on such plays and they exposed Barcelona in the 12th minute, only for Rubén Sobrino to miss a wide open net. But even had he scored, the goal wouldn’t have counted as the play was offside, but it showed that Alaves would look for chances on the counter even though they were sitting deep for most of the playing time.

Barcelona continued to dominate the pitch and the stat sheet, but it would be a mistake to say that Alaves were living on the edge, and that Barcelona were on the verge of scoring. The hosts were very organized defensively and Barcelona struggled to break through Alaves’ defensive ranks. Barcelona stepped off the gas a bit around the half-hour mark and Alaves quickly threatened. Sobrino easily outsprinted Gerard Pique for a one-on-one with Marc-Andre ter Stegen, but the young German made an excellent save.

Minutes later, Pique was in action again, this time on the opposite end of the pitch, controlling the corner kick, but he wasn’t able to send the ball on target. In the 37th minute, Barcelona won a free kick on the right sideline for a nasty challenge on Roberto. Messi sent a dangerous cross in, seemingly destined to find a teammate for an easy tap in, but instead Barcelona won a penalty kick after Pique was pulled down. Lionel Messi stepped up to take it and sent a pretty good shot to Pacheco’s right side, but the Spaniard was able to turn the ball around the post, keeping the game scoreless.

Barcelona continued to attack right up until the halftime whistle, but the first half would remain scoreless, mostly due to the effort of Pacheco who finished the opening 45 minutes with an impressive seven saves, which includes stopping a penalty kick.

The second half started without any substitutions and a very early chance for the home side. Wakaso’s deep pass completely opened up the Barcelona backline and Ibai squared the ball in front of goal, but Sobrino was half a step too late and the game remained scoreless.

Barcelona quickly went back on the attack, but like in the first half the Catalans couldn’t create any clear-cut scoring chances. There was constant action around Pacheco’s area, but Barcelona was missing that pass that would open up the defense. But that would change in the 55th minute when Messi scored his 350th La Liga goal. The goal came after a lovely one-two between Alba and Andres Iniesta, before Alba sent the ball into the middle, slightly off the mark. But Messi stole the ball back and with some help from an Alexis Ruano deflection finally scored the first goal of the game. Just moments after the goal, Valverde looked to his bench and sent Paco Alcacer out on the pitch in place of Vidal.

Barcelona continued to attack, with first Alba trying his luck from a good spot, but he missed badly. The left back also escaped serious injury as he was accidentally stepped on his Achilles tendon, but was able to continue. In the 66th minute Barcelona launched a quick counter attack led by Paco with Messi in support. The Spanish striker was looking to find Messi in space, but had the ball intercepted by Alexis. However, Paco reacted excellently to Alexis’ poor clearance, heading the ball into the area for Messi who completed the brace to double Barcelona’s lead.

Four minutes later, Denis Suarez joined the play in place of Gerard Deulofeu, who will surely feel he could’ve done more to help Barcelona win even though he made a few good looking plays. With nothing left to lose, Alaves looked livelier in attack, but the Barcelona defenders did their job. Messi then came within inches of completing the hat-trick, but his shot bounced off the crossbar. It was Messi’s fourth shot off the frame of the goal in two La Liga matches.

The pace of play dropped drastically in the final ten minutes of play as seemingly everybody started to wait for the final whistle. Barcelona continued to attack, though with less urgency while Alaves tried their best to score the consolidation goal. One noteworthy moment of the dying moments came in the 88th minute when Paulinho made his Barcelona debut in pace of Iniesta. In added time, Barcelona created a couple good scoring chances, but neither Denis nor Pique could add to Barcelona’s lead.

Barcelona now have two weeks off with an international break upcoming. The Catalans will be back in action on September 9 when Barcelona host city rivals Espanyol.
