UEFA appoint referee for Champions League match between Barcelona and Atlético Madrid

We have a man to blow the whistle in the huge Champions League game involving the reigning champions.

German referee Felix Brych has been assigned by the European Federation to officiate the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarterfinal game between Barcelona and Atlético Madrid, Tuesday at Camp Nou. This will be Brych's sixth UCL assignment this season.

The 40-year-old is one of Europe's best and most respected referees, and he is known as an official who is not afraid of booking people. Just in the five games he's officiated this season, Brych has dished out 30 total cards, two of them reds. Because he is always asked to referee tough, decisive games involving big team, he has a tendency to not let hard fouls go without punishment, and if there is a fight, he will sent people off without hesitation.

Barcelona's most recent match with Brych's involvement was also in the quarterfinals of last season's Champions League, the first leg against Manchester City in England. Barça won 2-1 that night, which was the first and only time the Blaugrana were victorious in a game refereed by the German.

So the takeaway from Brych's assignment is: expect some yellows, maybe a red. And we don't know if Barça is going to win.
