Two days ago, Barcelona was heavily linked with a German defender. That is out the window, so they want another German defender.
Sport Bild, a German media outlet that reported Barça were planning to make a big offer for Borussia Dortmund center-back Mats Hummels, are now saying the Blaugrana have shifted their attention to Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi, a Germany international and World Cup winner.
The 24-year-old is one of La Liga's best defensive players outside of the Barça-Real-Atleti universe, and he has emerged as a solid option to backup any of the three super teams of Spain. But it is safe to say he cannot be a signing that would change the status of a world-class club.
That is certainly the case with Barcelona, who need a true game-changer in their backline to not only support the current starting pairing of Gerard Piqué and Javier Mascherano, but also provide a reliable player to anchor the future of the Blaugrana defense.
As of now, Aymeric Laporte and Marquinhos are the two players who best fit Barça's needs, and they are real targets the Catalans are actually going for in the summer. Mustafi is fine, but just not what we desperately need right now.
