Barcelona is set to miss out on one of their transfer targets.
Borussia Dortmund star defender Mats Hummels has formally handed out a transfer request to his current club, specifically asking to be sold to Bayern Munich in the summer. The 27-year-old was one of the hottest properties in the market next season, with a number of clubs, including Barça, set to make bids for the German international.
Hummels came through the Bayern academy before joining Die Borussien, and is now all but set to come back to the Bavarians.
"Defender Mats Hummels has informed the club that he wishes to leave in the summer and join domestic league rivals Bayern Munich.
Borussia Dortmund’s business directors have decided that the feasibility of such a transfer will depend on Bayern Munich paying Borussia Dortmund an appropriate fee for a player of his incredibly high standard. At time of going to press, Bayern Munich had made no offer.
As a cautionary measure, it has been made publicly known that no release clause was negotiated with Mats Hummels -- as with all other players currently at Borussia Dortmund -- as part of his contract, and that the player is contractually beholden to the club until 30 June 2017."

Now picture this: when the transfer is confirmed, new Bayern manager Carlo Ancelotti, one of the best defensive tacticians in the world, will arrive at the Bavarian club and be in charge of a back four comprised of Philipp Lahm, Jerome Boateng, Mats Hummels and David Alaba. Yeah, that's good.
So you can cross Hummels off the list of Barça's new signings.
