Report: Barcelona planning big summer offer for Borussia Dortmund defender

One of the world's best footballers is once again on Barcelona's transfer list. But things could get real this time.

According to German outlet Bild, the Catalan giants are interested in signing Borussia Dortmund star Mats Hummels in this summer's transfer window. This is not the first time we hear about the German defender potentially joining the Blaugranes, but for the first time ever, there is an actual possibility.

Barça sporting director Robert Fernández made clear on various occasions that the club will sign a defender for next season due to a request from coach Luis Enrique, who wants more depth in the position. The main targets are Paris Saint-Germain prospect Marquinhos and Athletic Bilbao star Aymeric Laporte. The latter just suffered a serious injury and it is still unclear if he is going to be ready for the preseason, and Barça are reportedly reconsidering the Frenchman's signing because of it.

That is when Hummels comes back into the picture, with Bild's report claiming the player is not interested in re-signing with his current club. His deal expires next year, and the historic Europa League quarterfinal loss against Liverpool was one more reason for his dissatisfaction and desire to leave.

Normally a player of Hummels' stature would cost a fortune, but since he is entering the last year of his contract, the investment on his signing would be smaller than usual. And to be honest, no matter the cost, every cent would be worth it.
