Barcelona Brazil Federation agree Olympics deal; Neymar to miss 2016 Copa America

After months of negotiation, Neymar's plans for the summer are set.

Barcelona and the Brazilian Football Federation both announced that the player will only participate in the Olympic Games (August 3-21), and will miss the 2016 Copa America (June 3-25). The three parties have held talks for over two months about the issue, and now they have finally reached an agreement.

Brazil coach Dunga met with Barça boss Luis Enrique back in February to try and convince the manager that Neymar could play both competitions for the Seleção without creating any issues for the Catalan club next season. But since the start, Enrique made clear that he wanted his player to have a period of vacation to rest his body for the new campaign with the Blaugrana, and the club would only allow Neymar to take part in one of the two tournaments.

The player then came to Barça with a proposition: have one full month of vacation and only play in the Copa America starting in the quarterfinals if Brazil qualified in the group stage. The club said no, which finally convinced the Brazilian FA and Neymar that he could only be in one competition.

Since the Olympics are the only major football tournament the Seleção has not won, Neymar will be in Rio de Janeiro instead of the United States. For Barça, that is a little problematic since the forward will miss the entire preseason and the first few games of La Liga. At least he gets some rest.
