Barcelona's next match on the road to a second straight La Liga title is on Saturday at Camp Nou against relegation candidates Sporting Gijón. And the Catalan giants are still not sure if the best player on the planet will be available.
Lionel Messi missed Thursday's training session after a very tough match against Deportivo La Coruña on Wednesday on the physical department. The Argentinean took a few nasty blows to his right ankle during the match, and he made things worse by twisting it in the first half.
Messi looked fine during the second half but had a lot of pain the next day and couldn't practice, choosing to stay with the medical staff undergoing treatment while his teammates went through a recovery training session. Leo is likely to practice on Friday and should be available for Saturday since he's a maniac. Plus, since Barça are not in the Champions League and don't have to play in midweek, Messi will have seven days to rest and heal his ankle completely before the next league match.
Another player doubtful for the game against Gijón this weekend is Thomas Vermaelen, but for different reasons than Messi: he is recovering from a calf problem that cost him the last three games, and he might be medically cleared before the Gijón clash. That is unlikely to happen, but the Belgian defender will push to be ready for selection as soon as possible.
So expect Messi to play this weekend, almost certainly. Vermaelen, not really.
