Andoni Zubizarreta made good signings in his time as Barcelona's sporting director, including Luis Suárez, but his worst decision is still making headlines.
The former Blaugrana goalkeeper and official spoke in a long radio interview about a variety of subjects related to his time at the Catalan club, of which he was fired in the first week of 2015. One of the questions regarded Douglas, the Brazilian full-back who has only played 7 games in almost two years at the club. At the time, his signing was controversial, and as time went by, it just became a laughing stock.
But Zubi does not regret his decision, and he explained the reasons behind making such decision:
"We didn’t sign Douglas with the intention that he’d win the Champions League for us. If you consider everything which has happened to Douglas, he’s surprised by the noise created around you.
"We thought he was Barca quality and, for what we paid, he was worth it. It can’t be that we’re criticized for signing a finished product in Luis Suarez and one who isn’t [in Douglas].
"We signed Douglas like we signed Denis Suarez and [Alen] Halilovic, It seemed that he had potential. He was signed to add to the squad and as someone we could develop. How far [can he go]? We’ll see. At no other club does such a debate occur."

Hey Zubi, I'm a fan. Whether people want to accept it or not, you signed the Treble-winning squad we currently have. Luis Suárez, Ivan Rakitic, Claudio Bravo, Ter Stegen, Rafinha... all of them came because of you. But defending Douglas is even dumber than signing him.
