The biggest game of the entire season for Barcelona and Atlético Madrid happens on Wednesday night at Vicente Calderón. The two are the favorites in a wide open race for the La Liga title, and they also decide which of them will be in the Champions League semifinals.
After a tough, nervous first leg at the Camp Nou, with the Blaugrana winning 2-1 in comeback fashion, we expect an ever tougher match in the Spanish capital. Unfortunately for a few players, they won't take part in the game and will have to watch from home or the stands. Here is a look at the injuries and suspensions for the Calderón clash.
Injuries
There is no official word from Atlético's side in terms of players definitely out of the second leg through injury. Defenders José Giménez (hamstring) and Stefan Savic (foot) continue to run against the clock in order to be available for Wednesday, but they are highly unlikely to feature. Still, coach Diego Simeone is not ruling them out, so we can only get confirmation on that front when the final squad list is released. Midfielder Óliver Torres, who is not a key member of the squad, is also likely to miss the game with a groin injury.
On Barça's side, Adriano Correia is cleared, leaving Barça's injured list with three names: Jérémy Mathieu, Aleix Vidal and Sandro Ramírez. Out of the trio, only Vidal has remote chances of being available, but his presence would be unlikely even if was healthy. The loss to Real Sociedad did not bring any bad news in terms of physical problems, so Luis Enrique will probably name the same squad (and starting lineup) as he did in the first leg.
Suspensions
The only player missing the deciding match on the tie is the cause of all the controversy surrounding the first game: striker Fernando Torres, who scored and was sent off in less than 15 minutes at the Camp Nou, will not be available for the game at Calderón. His red card changed the game, and many argue that was the reason why Barcelona were able to come back and win. No players are in risk of missing a potential semifinal for yellow card accumulation, since all bookings are wiped out after the quarterfinals.
So the final list of players potentially missing the match at the Calderón is:
Player (Team) | Suspension/Injury | Status |
Fernando Torres (Atlético) | Suspended (red card) | Out |
Stefan Savic (Atlético) | Foot | Doubtful |
José Giménez (Atlético) | Hamstring | Doubtful |
Óliver Torres (Atlético) | Groin | Doubtful |
Jéremy Mathieu (Barcelona) | Knee | Out |
Aleix Vidal (Barcelona) | Hamstring | Doubtful |
Sandro Ramírez (Barcelona) | Hamstring | Out |
So with that list of absences, who is favorite to qualify at Calderón, Blaugranes?
