The Conmebol was harsh, and the Brazil national team's biggest hope is out of the remainder of the South American Cup.
Neymar Jr., the Barcelona superstar and Brazil captain, has been suspended for the next four Copa America matches, which means he will miss every game even if the Seleção reaches the competition's final. Along with the punishment, the Brazilian skipper was fined ten thousand dollars by the South American Federation.
However, the decision could be overturned. Brazil's football federation will appeal the ruling, and a final word will be handed out on Saturday by Conmebol.
Neymar was sent off at the end of Brazil's 1-0 loss to Colombia next Wednesday. After the final whistle, the striker kicked the ball in the direction of Colombian defender Pablo Armero. After center-back Murillo tried to confront Neymar for his actions, the Brazilian clearly attempted a headbutt, which caused the referee to sent both players off. Murillo has not yet been punished, and it seems like he won't be anyway.
Visibly upset throughout the whole match, Neymar had a very poor performance, and his actions at the end of the game have been hugely criticized by Chilean journalists. His teammates have supported him, including Barça friend and Argentina leader Javier Mascherano, who suggested that a player of Neymar's talent and style can be looked differently in South America, by both opponents and referees.
There's still hope regarding Neymar's future at this Copa, but it looks like the Seleção will have to find a way to win without its best player.
