Lionel Messi On Course to Shatter his 91 Goal Record

In 2012, Lionel Messi had done what most believed to be impossible. He had smashed the legendary Gerd Muller’s all time record for the number of goals scored in a single year. The football world stood shocked and amazed as Messi scored goal after goal, and by the end of the year the goal sheet read 91. Articles sang praises, Marca made excuses, and the football world applauded. Now, two years later, Leo is at it again.

Messi started 2012 with incredible form. He had a brace against Osasuna, a hat trick against Malaga, and a few more goals. Half way through February, Messi had scored 9 goals in all competitions. He continued his run until the end of the year. This time around, Lionel has 5 more goals then he did two years ago. Messi’s current tally for 2015 sits at 14 goals, and with a game against Malaga at the weekend, Barca fans will be hoping for another hat trick. Messi has the potential to break his own record, but it will not be an easy task. On the other hand, it is Messi we’re talking about, so we shouldn’t put it past him.

Messi is working hard

While a majority of Barca’s superstar players like Luis Suarez and Neymar were out spending time with families, or otherwise enjoying the two day break Lucho gave them, Messi was back in training. Barca’s all-time top scorer seems to be highly motivated in his attempts to score goals and win trophies. Leo spent three hours at the Ciutat Esportiva, spending a majority of his time in the gym, working. Whether he was working on his right foot, or just improving his fitness, one thing is certain, Lionel Messi is hell bent on keeping his form in top shape.

Messi is motivated

Cristiano Ronaldo, having recently won the Balon d’or for the third time, was on an impressive goal scoring streak just prior to winning the trophy. Now, however, he seems to have burned out, and needs recharging. This gives Messi the perfect chance to enhance his lead on Cristiano’s goal tally, not just in La Liga, but also in all competitions. Aside from this, Messi will have the added ambition of winning a fifth Balon d’or, and another golden boot, both of which were picked up by Cristiano, though he shared the golden boot with Luis Suarez.

With chance of winning the Champions League, La Liga, and several individual trophies, Leo has enough motivation to keep him going till the end of the year.

Copa America in the summer

In 2012, Messi had a two month period of stagnation, in which he didn’t score any goals. This was due to the fact that there was no competition. The season was over, and no competitions were to be played. This is not the case this year. In the summer, Messi will be action with Argentina to try and win the Copa America. More games to play in the summer, means more goals to be scored, and more trophies to win.

Keeping his form all year round is something that will be difficult, but if Messi continues in his current direction, he will be breaking a world record the set with his own two feet.
