Barcelona Injury Report: Thomas Vermaelen Ahead of Rehabilitation Schedule

Want more good news for Barcelona? The Verminator might debut waaaaaay earlier than expected.

Thomas Vermaelen has started to run continuously around the practice field while the rest of the team had a training session on Monday. After failing to recover from a groin injury he suffered at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Vermaelen underwent surgery to repair the problem. He has been doing rehab since the end of December, mainly physical therapy and limited movements.

According to reports, he was not expected to start running until at least early March, but his recovery has evolved way better than the medical staff was hoping, and he's already doing more complex exercises. The doctors have been cautious not to rush the process, but the improvement has been good enough to anticipate his return without risks.

If Vermaelen's recovery continues to go ahead of schedule, it is possible that he might debut for the Blaugrana this season, which was not expected by the time he had the surgery.

The 29-year-old center-back was bought from Arsenal in August for €15 million, and the only game he played was a friendly with Barça B against the Indonesia U-19 team. So far, that contract looks horrible, but hopefully he finally gets fit and becomes a good piece of the squad.
