Alex Song Opens Up About FC Barcelona Exit

The Cameroonian midfielder may have been a flop during his career at FC Barcelona, but Alex Song has gone from strength to strength since his switch back to the Premier League

Much-maligned and often the crude punchline for jokes at his expense; it's safe to say that Alex Song didn't exactly win over the fans in Catalunya during his spell at FC Barcelona and even now, it's easy to forget that the former Arsenal star is still under contract at the Camp Nou. Indeed, that sentiment tends to summarise his spell in a Blaugrana jersey quite well: ultimately forgettable, both for the calibre of his performances and perhaps as a convenient way to ease the pain after we parted with £15 million to prise him away from the Emirates.

While our only other signing from the summer of 2012, a Catalan full-back by the name of Jordi Alba, went on to establish himself as a starter and an indispensable member of the squad, Song barely even managed to secure himself a regular spot on the Barça bench. His departure in August was arguably a year overdue in truth, and in his first real interview since joining West Ham on loan, Song has lifted the lid on his time in La Liga.

Understandably a little frustrated with his spell in Spain, Song didn't have many kind words for the Barcelona management; whether he was referring to Tito Vilanova, Gerardo Martino or Luis Enrique remains to be seen:

"But at the end of the day the manager didn’t trust me. It’s football. It’s like this."

Alex Song on his lack of playing time at FC Barcelona

I'll admit, I had to re-read the interview a few times to make sense of the quote -- I mean, it just doesn't conform to the reality of his spell at the club until you add "justifiably" between "manager" and "didn't". Thankfully, Song loves life back in London so much that he has no real desire to return to the Camp Nou at the end of his loan. Forgive me if I let out a little smile...
