Following the departure of Andoni Zubizarreta, Barcelona have been looking for a new sporting director. And they have finally found one. Or two. Four, actually.
Club president Josep Maria Bartomeu decided to create a new commission that will be tasked with Zubi's responsibilities. Bartomeu wanted a group that mixed experience in business with football experience to achieve the desired success in signing new players and negotiating contract extensions.
For that group, the president appointed former Blaugrana player and coach Carles Rexach, an experienced man that is a close ally of Johan Cruyff, one of the most important people in the history of the club. Rexach was also involved in the signing of a 12-year-old Argentine kid who became Lionel Messi, which shows that he might now a thing or two about player evaluation.
Joining Rexach is Ariedo Braida, who worked at AC Milan for 30 years and is credited with building the team that ruled Italy from late-1980s to early-1990s. The two men have proved their experience at evaluating and signing players, but they don't have a background in business. To help them, Bartomeu promoted directors Jordi Mestre and Javier Bordas, two successful businessmen with the necessary financial experience to help them sign the best players for the best prices.
Since Barça is under the transfer ban and can't sign anyone until 2016, the commission's first task will be re-signing players. Most notably, Dani Alves, who still doesn't know whether or not he's staying after this season.
This new commission has a track record in the world of football and business, and the transfer market future for the Blaugrana could be brighter than the tumultuous past with Zubi. Let's hope they do a good job.
