La Liga: Athletic Bilbao 2-5 FC Barcelona: Player Ratings

A detailed, player-by-player breakdown of Barcelona's high scoring La Liga win over Athletic Bilbao.

It was basically a tale of two halves for Bravo who was absolutely tremendous in the first half, but could've done better in the second, especially on Aritz Aduriz's low shot. But he earned some wiggle room with a stunning save on that same player in the 19th minute when he showed brilliant reflexes, and added another great save about five minutes later on Markel Susaeta's attempt. Bravo also received a helping hand from the post which came to his aid around the half hour mark.

Dani Alves

Key Passes: 2

Shots/Shots on Target: 1/0

Tackles: 0

Turnovers: 2

Fouls: 1

Interceptions: 1

Bostjan says: 7.0

Once again Alves was very good lending support in attack, but he often left his side wide open for the counter attack. Thankfully Athletic rarely used Barcelona's right side, but even when they did Rakitić was there to provide help. In attack Alves did very well to be always open for the pass, and while some of his following passes missed the target, the Brazilian overall did well to distribute the ball into the danger areas. Alves picked up a yellow card that will rule him out for Barcelona's next La Liga game.

Jeremy Mathieu

Pass Accuracy: 86 %

Tackles: 1

Interceptions: 4

Aerial Duels Won : 4

Bostjan says: 6.0

Throughout the game I had an uneasy feeling whenever the ball came to Mathieu who always seemed to rush his clearances, even when he had time to look up and find a teammate, but his clearances now often found opposing players. He did bring some stability in the air game though as he led both teams in duels won with four. An improvement in Mathieu's form is needed if the Franchman wants to see the pitch more often.

Gerard Pique7.8

Minutes played: 90

Passes: 79

Pass Accuracy: 85 %

Tackles: 1

Interceptions: 2

Clearances: 7

Aerial Duels Won: 3

Fouls: 2

Bostjan says: 8.0

Another very solid performance from Pique who apart from a couple plays always seemed to be in the right spot. Sadly, of the few occasions in which he wasn't Barcelona were twice scored on. He wasn't solely at fault for the goals, but he could've reacted better. But putting those plays aside it's hard to find many mistakes in Pique's play.

Jordi Alba
7.6

Minutes played: 90

Touches: 116

Passes: 100

Pass Accuracy: 85 %

Shots/Shots on Target: 1/0

Tackles: 5

Interceptions: 1

Clearances: 6

Key Passes : 0

Aerial Duels Won : 1

Bostjan says: 7.5

Throughout the game Alba was one of the most active players on the pitch, as evidenced by his astonishing 116 touches. He struggled early on in defense, but he settled down and allowed very little traffic to get past him. Offensively he wasn't as lively as we've come to expect from him, focusing mostly on defense this time around, but he still had a very good chance to score a goal, but his header went wide of the target.

Sergio Busquets
7.8

Minutes played: 90

Touches: 104

Passes: 93

Pass Accuracy: 88 %

Tackles: 2

Interceptions: 3

Fouls Won: 3

Aerial Duels Won: 2

Turnovers: 2

Key passes: 1

Sam says: 7.5

A solid defensive performance from Busquets that helped restrict Athletic’s goals to just the two. His two tackles and three interceptions proved pivotal however he was lucky not to give away a penalty in the first half for tugging back Aduriz. From here on out, he worked on maintaining Barça’s midfield domination which allowed the likes of Rakitić and Xavi to push forward.

Xavi

Minutes played: 73

Shots/Shots on Target: 1/0

Turnovers: 1

Key Passes: 1

A bit hit and miss from the captain, while he produced moments of excellence he also showed rare signs of sloppiness. For instance, he really should’ve scored in the first half. After being played through by Messi, he rounded the keeper but instead of getting a shot away at an open goal, he elected to square it. The pass was snuffed out and what looked like a clear cut chance turned into nothing. However his smart dummy for Neymar’s goal was an example of the class that he has.

Ivan Rakitić
7.6

Minutes played: 90

Touches: 86

Passes: 80

Pass Accuracy: 95 %

Shots/Shots on Target: 1 /0

Fouls Won: 1

Tackles: 2

Turnovers: 0

Key Passes: 0

Aerial Duels Won : 2

Sam says: 7.0

Throughout the game, Rakitić was looking for ways to break down Athletic and he did well to find the route to the third goal. Receiving the ball from Xavi, his pass cut the through the defensive line to find Suárez who in turn crossed to Messi and the ball found the back of the net by way of a deflection. This game was also a good reflection of Rakitić’s willingness to drive the ball forward when needed, as seen by the build up to Barça's fourth goal. His passing too was very good at 95% success rate. Overall, a solid game from the Croatian.

Luis Suarez
8.3

Minutes played: 79

Touches: 43

Passes: 30

Pass Accuracy: 80 %

Shots/Shots on Target: 5/3

Turnovers: 2

Successful Dribbles: 1

Key Passes: 2

Fouls Won: 2

Aerial Duels Won: 3

Bostjan says: 8.5

Suarez finally scored again in La Liga, beating Gorka Iraizoz with a long range effort that probably could've been saved, but he should've scored at least one more time, having a great look on goal from only a couple yards out, but his poor header went right at the goalkeeper. He continuously tormented the Athletic back-line with his runs and passes. Suarez was the victim of a horrendous challenge from Xabier Etxeita that resulted in a red card and was probably the reason why Suarez was taken off with just over 10 minutes left to play.

Lionel Messi
9.5

Minutes played: 90

Touches: 100

Passes: 80

Pass Accuracy: 79 %

Shots/Shots on Target: 4/1

Fouls Won: 1

Successful Dribbles: 4

Key Passes: 5

Turnovers: 4

Fouls: 1

Bostjan says: 10.0

Do you have any idea how difficult it is to write something about the brilliance that is Messi after every game? It's really hard, especially after games like this one when he scored a goal, added two assists and was crucial in the buildup of the remaining two goal. He lost a few balls too many for my liking, a couple even resulted in counter attacks, but it's hard to imagine any of the five Barcelona goals being scored without Messi's contribution.

Neymar
8.2

Minutes played: 90

Touches: 96

Passes: 73

Pass Accuracy: 77 %

Shots/Shots on Target: 5/5

Fouls Won: 2

Key Passes: 2

Successful Dribbles: 5

Turnovers: 6

Bostjan says: 8.0

This was not one of Neymar's best nights, even if he did score a goal. The stats will tell a different story, but going by the eye test he had so many opportunities to help Barcelona in a more decisive way, however, he failed to do so. Of the five shots on target there was only one that was actually good, the one that he scored from, while the others, especially the one where he was all alone in front of the keeper, were mediocre at beast. Had Neymar been at his best Barcelona would've scored at least a couple goals more.

Adriano Correia6.8

Minutes played: 22

Touches: 24

Passes: 21

Pass Accuracy: 91 %

Key Passes : 1

Arron says: 6.5

With it emerging that both Martin Montoya and Douglas are ill and injured respectively, Luis Enrique’s decision to withdraw Dani Alves early from Sunday’s match looks even better in hindsight. The Brazilian had already picked up a yellow card ruling him out of next weekend’s match against Levante, so it made sense to rest his legs with a start against Villarreal on Wednesday in mind. Oh, and Adriano didn’t play too badly either.

Rafinha
6.7

Minutes played: 17

Touches: 28

Passes: 25

Pass Accuracy: 100 %

Tackles : 1

Arron says: 6.5

After his sensational display against Villarreal last weekend in La Liga, Rafinha dropped back to his usual place on the Barça bench and was favoured to Andrés Iniesta when Lucho looked to his subs for some fresh legs in midfield. Without much time to influence proceedings, Rafinha put in a solid, if unspectacular showing.

Pedro
7.3

Minutes played: 11

Touches: 15

Passes: 13

Pass Accuracy: 92 %

Key Passes: 2

Arron says: 7.5

Ironically, Pedro would score in one of the only matches in which Luis Suarez has also found the back of the net. Without that goal from the Uruguayan, maybe we would be using Pedro’s late exclamation point as an argument for him to earn his starting place back, but that’s all kind of moot if Suarez is finding form. Still, a positive appearance from one of our most regular options off the bench.

The Team8.8

Passes: 819

Pass Accuracy: 87 %

Shots/Shots on Target: 19 /10

Tackles: 16

Aerial Battles Won: 82 %

Fouls Won/Committed: 15/9

Arron says: 9.0

Let’s get the harsh part out of the way: we conceded twice, again. For the third time in succession actually, and while we’ve won our last three, that is far from ideal and could prove costly if that trend continues into the latter portion of the season. With that out of the way, let’s focus on the positives – we won, again. Interestingly, I figured out that our 20th consecutive win would come at the Camp Nou in El Clasico. Just in case anyone was wondering, because you know, this team does look kind of unbeatable at present.

Luis Enrique
8.3

Arron says: 8.5

Mathieu’s height was useful, but his poor passing and generally uncomfortable demeanour in possession could have served as a hindrance and cost us some points on another night. That decision aside, another faultless night from Enrique – to think so many were baying for his blood a month ago is strange to say the least, but hey, football is a fickle old game.

MOTM - Lionel Messi
83%

Bostjan says: Messi

It's been a long time since Messi didn't get at least 70% of the votes and this time was no different, collecting an astonishing 83% of the cast votes. Suarez came in at a distant second with a mere 4% while Pique edged Neymar for third place with one more vote than the Brazilian.
