A detailed, player-by-player breakdown of Barcelona's commanding La Liga victory over Sevilla.
Claudio Bravo | 6.9 |
Minutes played: 90 Touches: 28 Passes: 18 Pass Accuracy: 89 % Shots Faced: 0 Saves Made: 0 Clearances: 0 Bostjan says: 6.5 This won’t be one of Bravo’s favorite games as he let in a goal without facing a single shot. But those things happen, just ask Victor Valdes against Arsenal in 2011, however, the problem I had with the goal was that, even though he was hung out to dry by the right side of the defense, he reacted poorly to Vitolo’s cross. It was a ball that he should’ve dealt with. But apart from that he looked very calm with the ball, even when he was under pressure from Sevilla’s forwards. |
Dani Alves | 6.7 |
Minutes played: 90 Touches: 103 Passes: 86 Pass Accuracy: 91 % Key Passes: 2 Shots/Shots on Target: 0/0 Tackles: 5 Fouls Won: 4 Clearances: 1 Fouls: 2 Interceptions: 2 Bostjan says: 6.5 This was a slightly different Dani compared to what we’ve become used to from him this season. He was more defensively oriented, where apart from poor positioning and a poor reaction on Vitolo’s play that led to the goal Alves was mostly very solid. Offensively the story was very different; many poor touches coupled with several poor decisions led to many turnovers. Alves was lucky on a few occasions that Sevilla played overly aggressive as he would’ve lost even more balls than he already did had the referee not whistled for fouls. |
Gerard Pique | 7.2 |
Minutes played: 90 Touches: 82 Passes: 66 Pass Accuracy: 97 % Tackles: 3 Interceptions: 4 Clearances: 3 Aerial Duels Won: 3 Bostjan says: 7.5 This was the Pique we all love to see on the pitch. Maybe the fire Luis Enrique lit under his behind actually did the trick as the Pique was a machine defensively. There were a couple of mistakes still, like the time he walked the ball out for a corner kick and when he, like Alves, showcased how not to defend Vitolo, but overall this was a much improved Pique. The central defender even helped out in attack with his accurate passing, springing Luis Suarez in the second half which resulted in Ivan Rakitić’s goal. |
Jeremy Mathieu | 7.6 |
Minutes played: 90 Touches: 76 Passes: 66 Pass Accuracy: 94% Tackles: 1 Interceptions: 2 Clearances: 3 Aerial Duels Won: 0 Fouls: 1 Bostjan says: 7.5 Making his first appearance since his injury, Mathieu returned to being a cog in the Barcelona back-line. It was very promising to see that Mathieu and Pique looked comfortable together on the pitch. Mathieu wasn’t tested as much as his defensive partner was, but he maintained his concentration throughout and played a very strong game. The tackle he made on Bacca around the half hour mark was a culmination of why Mathieu was brought into the team. |
Jordi Alba | 7.6 |
Minutes played: 81 Touches: 65 Passes: 49 Pass Accuracy: 92% Shots/Shots on Target: 2/1 Tackles: 1 Interceptions: 3 Clearances: 2 Aerial Duels Won : 0 Key passes: 0 Bostjan says: 7.0 With Alves playing more defensive football, Alba was able to focus more on the attack. The little speedster was extremely active in the attacking third throughout his time on the pitch, he was subbed off late in the game, combining brilliantly with whoever was at the time playing on the left wing. Alba timed his overlapping runs perfectly, creating a couple chances for his teammates and even helped create one for himself, though he shanked it badly. Defensively he also made a couple very strong plays, but his contributions were marred by the own goal he scored. |
Sergio Busquets | 7.5 |
Minutes played: 90 Touches: 98 Passes: 86 Pass Accuracy: 100% Tackles: 6 Interceptions: 4 Shots/Shots on Target: 1/0 Clearances: 0 Aerial Duels Won: 0 Turnovers: 0 Key passes: 0 Sam says: 8.5 A superb performance from Busquets that helped nullify Sevilla’s attack and strengthen Barça’s. Busquets’ primary job is to convert defence into attack as quickly as possible and he was great at it during the game, as soon as he had the ball he looks up for the pace of Suárez, Messi and Neymar to begin a counter attack. Most impressively he ended the game with a 100% pass success rate having made 86 passes that all found their target. |
Xavi | 8.1 |
Minutes played: 76 Touches: 86 Passes: 78 Pass Accuracy: 9 1% Shots/Shots on Target: 0/0 Turnovers: 0 Key Passes: 1 Successful Dribbles : 1 Tackles: 1 Sam says: 8.0 Coming back into the side in the place of Andrés Iniesta, Xavi put in a good performance. His chipped free kick found Neymar who helped Barça on their way to a comfortable win. It was also Xavi who initiated the counter attack that saw Barça get their fourth. Picking up the ball from Mathieu, the midfielder picked out Messi who went on to score the record-breaking goal. Xavi left the field soon after with his work completed. |
Ivan Rakitić | 7.9 |
Minutes played: 90 Touches: 82 Passes: 72 Pass Accuracy: 83% Shots/Shots on Target: 3/1 Fouls Won: 1 Tackles: 1 Turnovers: 1 Key Passes: 0 Successful Dribbles : 1 Sam says: 8.0 Appearing against his old club for the first time, Rakitić had a very good game. He helped control the midfield and even got on the scoresheet. When Suárez broke forward his burst of pace into the box meant he was left unmarked and his free header gave Barça a two-goal cushion. Rakitić saw out the game helping Barça to keep control of the midfield so their attackers could inflict further damage. |
Luis Suarez | 8.0 |
Minutes played: 72 Touches: 43 Passes: 13 Pass Accuracy: 69% Shots/Shots on Target: 0/0 Turnovers: 2 Successful Dribbles: 2 Key Passes: 4 Fouls Won: 1 Tackles: 1 Ahmed says: 8.0 Deserved more. Tremendous work ethic. Suarez played a big role in the victory. He created a host of chances for his team-mates and assisted for the third goal with a perfectly timed run and weighted pass for Rakitic. Suarez was lying in wait for Messi’s second goal with a simple tap-in, but it was always going to be Messi’s goal. Suarez was substituted soon after. The goals will come. |
Lionel Messi | 9.7 |
Minutes played: 90 Touches: 100 Passes: 68 Pass Accuracy: 96% Shots/Shots on Target: 5/5 Fouls Won: 3 Successful Dribbles: 7 Key Passes: 2 Turnovers: 4 Tackles: 1 Ahmed says: 10.0 No superlatives can do him justice. Absolutely sensational. Record breaker. History maker. Cherish his every moment. Mesmerising, magisterial and magical from beginning to end. Fantastic all-round play with many of his passes going through the eye of a needle. Messi scored goals number 251, 252 and 253 with a superbly taken hat-trick. He scored two golazos on the way to being the all-time La Liga top goal-scorer at the age of 27, overtaking Telmo Zarra in the process. Impossible is nothing. |
Neymar | 8.7 |
Minutes played: 90 Touches: 73 Passes: 53 Pass Accuracy: 77 % Shots/Shots on Target: 4/3 Fouls Won: 6 Key Passes: 3 Successful Dribbles: 2 Turnovers: 5 Ahmed says: 8.5 What a player. Neymar is always playing with a smile on his face and he gets better and better with every game. He scored with a glancing header but should have scored when put through in the first-half. He was frequently fouled and not everything he tried came off, but he selflessly put Messi’s second goal on a plate for him to score. Neymar also assisted Messi’s third; indeed their understanding is almost telepathic at times. Extraordinary. |
Pedro | 6.3 |
Minutes played: 18 Touches: 13 Passes: 11 Pass Accuracy: 91 % Shots/Shots on Target : 0/0 Interceptions : 1 Arron says: 7.0 Much-maligned, oft-criticised, yet strangely effective; Pedro replaced Luis Suarez immediately after Lionel Messi’s record-breaking goal and put in a good cameo performance off the bench. Given his poor form or relative impotence over the past couple of seasons, maybe this impact role off the bench will work in the long run for the Spaniard? If his near assist in this one is anything to go by, Pedro might still have a role to play at this club after all... |
Rafinha | 6.5 |
Minutes played: 14 Touches: 18 Passes: 16 Pass Accuracy: 88 % Successful Dribbles : 1 Arron says: N/A Replacing Xavi is always a tough ask, especially when the Catalan midfielder has treated us to a masterclass as he did last night, so it’s tough to really judge Rafinha for his brief cameo. Still, it was nice to see him back on the field and not up in the stands nursing another injury. |
Adriano Correia | 5.8 |
Minutes played: 9 Touches: 11 Passes: 7 Pass Accuracy: 86 % Tackles : 2 Arron says: N/A The same could probably be said about Adriano; we haven’t seen an awful lot of the Brazilian thus far this campaign, but he remains a great option to have around. However, as his wayward shot displayed, he is probably a little off top form and match fitness at present. |
The Team | 8.7 |
Passes: 733 Pass Accuracy: 91 % Shots/Shots on Target: 16 /10 Tackles: 22 Aerial Battles Won: 50 % Fouls Won/Committed: 21 /8 Arron says: 9.5 In the first 45 minutes, we hosted one of the division’s best sides and didn’t allow them a single shot. Not one, in the entirety of the half. In the entire game, we limited them to two shots overall, and neither of those troubled Claudio Bravo. At the other end, we had 70% possession, created chance after chance after chance and scored a Manita of goals. If you’re asking me, that’s about as close to a perfect performance as we are going to see from Luis Enrique’s side. |
Luis Enrique | 7.7 |
Arron says: 9.0 Speak of the devil...it was a strong selection and almost all of the big calls he made were vindicated in one way or another. Piqué was excellent, Alves had his moments and everyone from Busquets forward was sensational. In a word, this was progress. |
