Luis Suarez does not need surgery ‘for now’

Uruguay’s doctor has played down concerns

Luis Suarez is indeed playing with a knee injury at the moment but Uruguay team doctor Alberto Pan has played down fears he needs to undergo surgery.

We brought you news earlier this week that Suarez reportedly has a cyst in his knee that could require an operation, although it is believed to be a relatively minor complaint.

Suarez featured for Uruguay in midweek in the goalless draw with Venezuela and afterwards Pan discussed the nature of the striker’s problem.

“It's a controlled situation and it will come down to his tolerance of what happens in the next few games," Pan said.

"If he feels discomfort, then a decision will be taken. For now, he doesn't need surgery.

"[Barcelona] have been treating a meniscal cyst, which is a common problem for footballers.

"It's related to injuries in the meniscus, and it doesn't usually require an operation."

The report also states that Suarez has been undergoing “special treatment” while on international duty as they manage the problem.

It seems that for now a conservative approach is being taken, and we’ll just have to wait and see if further treatment is needed.
