Valencia are second now
Newly-promoted Girona got a shock win against Real Madrid, in a game that had the backdrop of political intrigue. Meanwhile, Valencia won yet again, and are second. And Malaga have finally won a match.
Girona, the small club in Catalonia, not only won against the Madrid giants, but outplayed them on their way to a 2-1 win. Real Madrid actually took the lead first, against the run of play, through Isco. Girona hit the post twice before finally scoring, Cristhian Stuani getting the equalizer. And then Portu got the winner, with a hint of offside, but the victory was fully deserved anyway.
This all came as the Catalan parliament was declaring independence, a move the central Spanish government in Madrid opposes.
Villarreal drew 1-1 with Atletico Madrid, Carlos Bacca getting a late goal to cancel Angel Correa’s opener.
Meanwhile, Valencia got another result, this time, a slightly labored one. Alaves are now bottom of the table after los che put them away 2-1, with a 66th minute goal from Rodrigo Moreno breaking the deadlock.
Valencia is the form team now, with six wins in a row after their opening three matches ended in draws. Simone Zaza also got himself a goal again, keeping him three away from Lionel Messi.
Messi scored too, of course, as Barcelona stayed top with a 2-0 win over Athletic Bilbao.
At the other end of the table, Malaga finally won a game, which took them out of last place. Recio scored the winner via penalty as Malaga defeated Celta Vigo 2-1.
Sevilla snapped a two-match losing streak, and broke Leganes’s 6-match unbeaten streak, with a 2-1 triumph. The winning goal came from Pablo Sarabia.
Las Palmas continued their freefall, losing their 7th La Liga game in a row, against a team they had beaten in the Copa del Rey - Deportivo La Coruña. That match - 3-1 to Depor - could have potential relegation-battle consequences at the end of the season.
