Barcelona vs. Málaga, 2017 La Liga: Final Score 2-0, Barça cruise to another victory

It wasn’t very exciting, but it was enough to win again

Barcelona returned to the winning ways in La Liga, picking up their eighth victory in nine games thanks to a 2-0 win against Málaga at Camp Nou. The Blaugrana did not play exceptionally well and weren’t too exciting, but had no trouble getting the win against the worst team in the league and will stay on top of the table for another week.

FIRST HALF

When Gerard Deulofeu tapped home a cross from Lucas Digne to score the first goal (which shouldn’t have counted, the ball had gone out of play before Digne’s touch), it seemed like Barça were ready to destroy Málaga and put on a show for the supporters. They didn’t. Not even close.

For the entire first half Barça played the game at a very slow pace, with many lateral passes and not enough movement to break down the Málaga defense, which led to a very boring first half. Hopefully things would improve in the second.

SECOND HALF

The second half was a little better from Barça, who played quicker and moved better without the ball. Andrés Iniesta got an early goal thanks to an assist from Lionel Messi, and Barça looked set for another victory. The lead made the team comfortable and they didn’t really push for a third in the final minutes, and Ernesto Valverde made substitutions to keep the team defensively strong and avoid conceding a silly goal.

The strategy worked and Barça simply cruised through the last 15 minutes. The team could have played much, much better, but it looks like we won’t get great football from Valverde, at least for now. As long as we keep getting easy wins against bad teams and not losing against good teams, that’s... fine?
