UEFA appoint referee for Barcelona's Champions League opener against Celtic

A debut referee for the season debut!

Barcelona make their Champions League debut in the 2016/17 season against Celtic on Tuesday, and UEFA have appointed a man to officiate the match.

Romanian referee Ovidiu Hategan has been named by the European Federation to take care of the game at Camp Nou, and this will will be his first Champions League assignment this season. Hategan has never overseen a Barcelona match in his career, which is a little bit of an interesting fact.

The 36-year-old is a young referee, but he has a nice career already, including two matches in Euro 2016 (Poland vs Northern Ireland, Italy vs Ireland). His Champions League career has games involving teams like Manchester City, Arsenal, Atlético Madrid, Tottenham Hotspur, Paris Saint-Germain and now he can add a Barcelona match to his resumé.

While he has never officiated Barça games, Hategan has seen some Barça players on the pitch already. Neymar and Rafinha played in two Brazil Olympic matches refereed by the Romanian this summer, with the Brazilians recording a win and a draw in those games.
