Atletico Madrid's season finally sparked into life as they won 4-0 away to Celta Vigo thanks to an Antoine Griezmann double on Saturday. Diego Simeone's side opened with disappointing draws against Alaves and another promoted side, Leganes, and Atleti went in goalless at the interval at Balaidos.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored on his return from injury as Real Madrid thrashed promoted Osasuna 5-2 at the Bernabéu to equal the club’s 1960-61 record of 15 successive La Liga wins. Even better for Real, Barcelona’s later home defeat to Alavés left Zinedine Zidane’s side alone at the top.
Ronaldo made his return from a knee injury and needed just six minutes to score in Madrid's 5-2 La Liga win over Osasuna on Saturday. Modric, who also got on the scoresheet, praised the Portugal captain and is thrilled to see him back in Zinedine Zidane's team. "The fact that he's back means a lot to us," the Croatia star told the club's website."He's a great player and his presence and leadership out on the pitch are very important. I'm sure that with every game he plays, he'll get stronger."
The France forward led by example at the Balaídos stadium, and also apologised for doubting his team. "I had to play a match like that," he said. "I am very happy with the team, for our effort. I want to say I am sorry for what I said [after the Leganés draw] because I shouldn’t have said it in public."
Las Palmas were within minutes of extending their 100 per cent start to three matches at Sevilla but somehow ended up beaten 2-1 after the hosts launched an incredible late comeback. Quique Setien's newly-promoted side from Gran Canaria hit nine goals in wins over Valencia and Granada and looked on course to record their most impressive win yet at the Estadio Sanchez Pizjuan after Tana's excellent 16th-minute strike.
Villarreal scored two goals in the last fifteen minutes of the first half and controlled the second half to post a 2-0 win over Malaga. The first goal came from Jaume Costa, assisted by Santos Borré, who took a throw-in and maneuvered around three Malaga players to cross the ball to Costa. The Colombian earned a penalty moments later, but Bruno’s penalty kick was saved by Kameni. Manu Trigueros then made a great pass to Nicola Sansone, Kameni parried the first shot, but not the second, and Villarreal had all they needed.
La Liga president Javier Tebas is in favour of Chinese billionaire Wang Jianlin's plans to launch a rival competition to UEFA's Champions League. Dalian Wanda Group, run by Jianlin, is considering creating a new competition to include Europe's top clubs. Wanda's proposal, according to The Financial Times, is to eliminate UEFA's Champions League and Europa League competition, and instead have one expanded competition that would included no less than 32 teams but no more than 64.
