Aleix Vidal's Chances Are Slipping at FC Barcelona

The fullback was not impressive against Alaves and patience is running short.

Aleix Vidal was supposed to be FC Barcelona's starter by now. Bought from Sevilla last season, he did not play the first half due to Barcelona's registration ban. But he was seen as the long-term replacement to Dani Alves, who left for Juventus during the past transfer window.

The fact that apart from Alves, the other right-backs in the squad - Adriano Correia, Douglas, and Martin Montoya - have been loaned or transferred means the way would be clear for Vidal to seize his chance.

Unexpectedly however, Sergi Roberto has converted from midfielder to right-back, and at the moment, looks miles ahead of Vidal.

Vidal was abysmal against Alaves, lacking end product in attack and being frail defensively. To be fair, he wasn't helped much by Javier Mascherano on the right side of defense, or that Lionel Messi was not playing as a right-winger for most of the match.

Still, this was Alaves, and while it's not fair to pin such a bad performance on one or even a handful of players, Vidal looked like a weak link.

The fact that Luis Enrique did not use Vidal much last season, and that rumors went on that Barcelona were trying to make a last-minute move for another right-back as the transfer window closes, bodes badly for Vidal.

Roberto is clearly the starter now, and if Vidal cannot make his chances count, he will be in serious trouble of being replaced.
