Barcelona 1-2 Real Madrid, 2016 El Clasico: Player Ratings

A detailed, player-by-player breakdown of Barcelona's loss to Real Madrid in La Liga

You know how Bravo so often in games made a stunning save or two to single-handedly win Barcelona points? Well, this time he didn't and Barcelona lost the game. Admittedly, on both goals he was hung out to dry by his defense and he had absolutely no chance on the first goal, but every time a keeper gets beaten through the legs one has to wonder if maybe he could've/should've made the save.

Dani Alves

Bostjan says: 5.5

Alves went largely unnoticed throughout the game, well, up until the point when he was terribly positioned to head away Bale's cross on the play leading to the winning goal. From the get go Alves looked timid in attack, only sending a couple of half-useful balls to his teammates, though on many occasions he simply turned the ball over. Defensively he wasn't much better. There was the good diving block early in the second half and a couple good tackles, but the Brazilian often looked unsure - whether he was playing in attack or in defense.

Gerard Pique
6.9

Aerial Duels Won: 1

Bostjan says: 7.5
A rare bright spot for Barcelona in the El Clasico. Not only did Pique score against his "favorite" team, he also put on an excellent performance on the defensive side of the ball - highlighted by his excellent diving block on a Karim Benzema shot early in the second half and a solid steal while one-on-one with Ronaldo. But not even Pique on his game could've stopped Benzema on the first goal as the Catalan was unluckily lobbed by the deflected cross from Kroos.
Javier Mascherano 6.2

Paired with Pique, the duo formed a formidable defensive wall in the heart of the danger area for Barcelona, if only the flanks had done their jobs as well... But Mascherano again proved that he deserves to be the starter, making a couple vital challenges without which Barcelona's loss could've been even worse.

Jordi Alba
4.4

To single out one player and blame him for the loss would be unfair as there were many disappointing showings but Alba certainly was in the thick of it on several negative plays. Alba was unlucky with the defection on the first goal allowed but his positioning allowed Bale too much space - and that was not the only play on which that happened as Real Madrid had much success attacking right at Alba all night long.

Sergio Busquets

Sam says: 7.0

One of Barça’s better players, his defensive work was crucial to limiting Madrid's chances. There was not a lot he could do for either of the Madrid goals as both Benzema and Ronaldo were past him when they shot. He completed the most passes but could’ve done with more offensively minded passes to create chances.

Ivan Rakitić
6.5
Minutes played: 73
Touches: 61
Passes: 48
Pass Accuracy: 94%
Shots/Shots on Target: 2/1
Turnovers: 1
Key Passes: 1
Fouls Won: 3
Tackles: 2

Sam says: 7.0

A good performance from Rakitić highlighted by the fact that when he went off, the wheels seemed to come off for Barça. Only Gerard Piqué had a better pass success rate and he completed his fair share of tackles and interceptions. He routinely pushed forward and looked to use the space vacated by Messi and managed two crosses from this wide position. Was replaced in the 73rd minute by Arda Turan.

Andres Iniesta
6.0
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 85
Passes: 77
Pass Accuracy: 90%
Shots/Shots on Target: 1/0
Fouls Won: 3
Turnovers: 2
Successful Dribbles: 2
Key Passes: 1
Interceptions: 1

Sam says: 6.5

A quiet night for Iniesta as his performance mirrored the teams. He was good in the first half, if not overly effective but once the tide began to turn in Madrid’s favour, Iniesta could seemingly do nothing about it. He didn’t chances nor did he prevent them and this created a disconnection between the front three and the midfield.

Lionel Messi
5.6
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 99
Passes: 80
Pass Accuracy: 86%
Shots/Shots on Target: 3/1
Turnovers: 5
Successful Dribbles: 2
Key Passes: 3
Fouls Won: 0
Interceptions: 0

Sam says: 6.5

Was moved more centrally to create a four man midfield but this proved to be his undoing and there was no space to operate in there. Casemiro stuck to him throughout meaning Messi had to drop deeper and deeper to receive the ball. This made it difficult to link with his strike partners and therefore limited his usual effectiveness.

Luis Suarez
4.3
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 38
Passes: 24
Pass Accuracy: 83%
Shots/Shots on Target: 3/0
Fouls Won: 2
Successful Dribbles: 1
Key Passes: 2
Turnovers: 5

Sam says: 5.5

Practically non-existent throughout. Made rare appearances but was usually only to clash with Pepe or Ramos. Managed three shots but none of them were on target and he didn’t hold the ball up long enough to bring the others into play. Spent a long time on the floor as well as he took Pepe’s bait of playacting.

Neymar 5.2
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 61
Passes: 42
Pass Accuracy: 83%
Shots/Shots on Target: 1/0
Successful Dribbles: 2
Key Passes: 3
Fouls Won: 1
Turnovers: 6
Tackles: 1

Kevin says: 6.0

Like his strike partners, Neymar was no near his usual effectiveness. His best chance came from a free kick which didn’t cause Keylor Navas any trouble. He had the worst pass success rate of any Barça outfield player and as a result, didn’t create any chances for his teammates.

Arda Turan
3.8
Minutes played: 17
Touches: 12
Passes: 11
Pass Accuracy: 91%
Shots/Shots on Target: 1/

Kevin says: 5.0

In truth, Turan's introduction had little or no real effect on the game as Barça had ceded control in midfield by the time he stepped onto the pitch. Rakitic wasn't fully fit and a change had to be made but Arda will be left with bitter memories of his El Clasico debut. Had a chance late to grab an equaliser but saw his shot blocked down.

Aerial Battles Won: 46%
Fouls Won/Committed: 15/17

Barça weren't at the races for large periods of Saturday evening, that was abundantly clear. The game itself as a spectacle wasn't much to look at and it was hard not to wonder what Johan Cruyff would have made of the home team squandering possession so readily in the second half, misplacing passes and appearing totally disjointed at times. It was fabulous to see Piqué finally add to his tally against Madrid but aside from that, there wasn't anything close to the goal threat we have become used to seeing. A lot of this comes down to how well Madrid performed in frustrating and pressing in and around their box. Casemiro in particular stood out.  Leaving aside his cruel deflection that brought about Madrid's first goal, Jordi Alba was, not for the first time this season, targeted as an aerial weakness. In my opinion Bale's header was totally valid and should have stood. This vulnerability will no doubt be of concern to the manager. Dani Alves will also draw criticism for his positioning for Ronaldo's winner. The streak was fantastic but as Enrique has continually reminded us, it means nothing if trophies don't come at the end of it. I'm not throwing the team under the bus for losing one game out of forty against a highly motivated and well organised Madrid team. A defeat can teach you far more than a string of easy victories. Let's hope the boys dust themselves off and come back strong against Atleti during the week.
Luis Enrique

Kevin says: 5.0

Hard to know what way to go here. Had the clear foul on Messi been awarded, we'd be talking about a completely different situation but such is football. As it was, the mister went with what is considered his marquee 11. There is perhaps the argument that Sergi Roberto might have got a nod ahead of Rakitic who was returning from injury but aside from that, the team essentially picked itself. Unless of course, he was to succumb to Ter Stegen's warning shot fired earlier in the week but that was never really going to happen. Whatever it was that Enrique was looking for from his team on Saturday though, he simply didn't get it. A bad night.

MOTM - Nobody
43%

Bostjan says: Pique
As is often the case in games in which the "nobody" options appears, no player was deemed worthy to win the Man of the Match award. The player that came the closest was Pique with 21% while Rakitić came behind the Barcelona central defender with 11%,
