Barça played Almeria in the Camp Nou, and won 4-0. Here are a few observations.
Barça is strolling
A sign of a good team is one that can win when not in good form. Despite the flattering score line, Barça had to fight for a result with a majority of the starting eleven resting, injured, or otherwise not on the pitch. This most recent performance is similar to the performance at the Balaidos, though not as bad. We were slow in possession, and almost lazy with our defending. With important fixtures right around the corner, Barça would do well to wake from this little snooze.
Sergi Roberto impresses as a deep lying midfielder
Barça fans are more used to seeing Busquets in this role, and sometimes Mascherano. However, with Sergio’s suspension and Mascherano deputizing in defense, Sergi Roberto was given the chance to show what he could do. Suffice it to say, Sergi did not disappoint. His passing was reaching its mark, and his defensive contribution was excellent. We did see some hesitancy, but that was most likely due to his lack of playing time.
Alves isn’t doing much to help his contract situation
Alves had yet another mixed display today. He executed a few good tackles and passes, but was largely ineffective. His crosses were aimless as well, finding absolutely nothing. According to rumors, Dani wants a 3 year extension deal. With performances like the one now, it’s hard to see Barça accepting.
Xavi should stay for one more season
Barça's transfer ban is in effect for one more transfer window, which would mean that if anyone leaves, our squad depth would be paper thin. Xavi needs to stay for one more year, not because we want him to (which we do), but because we need him. Even at his age Xavi has much to offer the team. His experience, calmness, leadership, and quality are things that should not be overlooked. A contract extension would make many Cules happy, even if Xavi isn’t a fulltime starter next season.
Players still getting good rest in the business end of the season
Gerard Pique, Jeremy Mathieu, Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, Andres Iniesta, and Neymar all got rested today. This alone should speak volumes about Barça’s depth. A hard month is coming up, in which Barça play Sevilla, Valencia, PSG (twice), and Espanyol. It’s paramount that the players remain healthy, If the team is to win all titles.
