A familiar face to English Premier League followers, Mark Clattenburg has been chosen as the man to referee FC Barcelona's UEFA Champions League first-leg match with Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday
Just over two days remain before the resumption of FC Barcelona's UEFA Champions League campaign against Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday, and today we learned the identity of the man in the middle as it was announced that Mark Clattenburg will adjudicate proceedings in Paris. Of course, Clattenburg is one of the most famous referees in England and is perhaps the finest that the nation has to offer after the retirement of Howard Webb this past summer.
Indeed, Clattenburg was entrusted with the whistle in this weekend's Manchester derby, where he made the gutsy decision not to issue a red card to Manchester City captain, Vincent Kompany, for his aggressive challenge on former AFC Ajax star, Daley Blind. It was perhaps the only contentious decision in a relatively quiet match for his officiating team although this comes in stark contrast to his record in this season's UEFA Champions League.
In the four matches he has officiated in Europe's premier club competition this season, Clattenburg has issued a staggering 28 yellow cards -- and 25 of those have come in his three most recent appearances. Thankfully, none of the FC Barcelona contingent are a yellow away from missing the second-leg but this may spell trouble for the Parisians with both Blaise Matuidi and Gregory Van der Wiel one booking away from missing the match at the Camp Nou.
What do we think Cules? Are we in favour of the appointment of a strict referee for Wednesday's match, or should we be concerned that the tempo of proceedings may be affected?
