A detailed, player-by-player breakdown of Barcelona's disappointing La Liga draw with Sevilla.
Claudio Bravo | 4.9 |
Minutes played: 90 Touches: 35 Passes: 19 Pass Accuracy: 58 % Shots Faced: 2 Saves Made: 0 Clearances : 2 Bostjan says: 6.0 This was a very uncharacteristic performance by Bravo who offered Sevilla the lifeline to get back into the game. Barcelona seemed well on their way to a dominant victory over one of the hottest teams in Europe, but Ever Banega managed to beat Bravo to start the comeback with a shot that the Chilean really should’ve stopped. The second goal Bravo had no chance of stopping. But putting that mistake aside Bravo had a pretty solid game, even making a couple of plays quite some way outside of his penalty area, though his passing left much to be desired. |
Dani Alves | 6.1 |
Minutes played: 90 Touches: 80 Passes: 65 Pass Accuracy: 88 % Key Passes: 0 Aerial Duels Won : 2 Tackles: 5 Shots/Shots on Target : 1/0 Clearances : 1 Turnovers: 1 Interceptions: 0 Bostjan says: 6.5 The Brazilian started the game strong, both in attacking link-up and in defense, but he seemed to fade as the game went on. It started late in the first half when he first gave up a chance to Vicente Iborra before turning the ball over for an excellent Ever Banega chance just minutes later. In the second half he failed to make an impression, with just about the only note I made about him being the absolutely atrocious attempt in the dying moments of the game. |
Gerard Pique | 5.8 |
Minutes played: 90 Touches: 75 Passes: 66 Pass Accuracy: 89 % Tackles: 1 Interceptions: 0 Clearances: 5 Aerial Duels Won : 2 Bostjan says: 6.5 Up until the mistake that led to Sevilla’s second goal Pique had an excellent game. He made several important clearances, in fact, he an Alba had the most clearances of anybody on the pitch. Positionally he was excellent throughout, but in the end it was the passing that was his undoing as an errant pass started Sevilla’s equalizing attack. Pique also picked up a yellow card |
Jeremy Mathieu | 6.1 |
Minutes played: 90 Touches: 91 Passes: 79 Pass Accuracy: 82 % Tackles: 1 Interceptions: 3 Clearances: 3 Aerial Duels Won : 1 Shots/Shots on Target : 1/1 Bostjan says: 7.0 Mathieu had yet another very solid defensive game making numerous defensive plays. He was strong in the air game and anticipated the play very well, but not even he could save Barcelona from conceding two. Mathieu once again tried to be a catalyst in attack for the Catalans, but this time he didn’t try to score a header. He actually attempted to score with a scissor kick, but while he did get the shot on target, he was unable to beat the goalkeeper. |
Jordi Alba | 6.2 |
Minutes played: 90 Touches: 98 Passes: 87 Pass Accuracy: 97 % Turnovers: 0 Tackles: 1 Interceptions: 0 Clearances: 5 Key Passes : 3 Shots/Shots on Target : 0/0 Bostjan says: 6.5 Alba too focused a lot on the attacking side of the game, but the end product was lacking. He showed good movement on many plays, but in the end none of his passes led to goals – it wasn’t for the lack of trying, though. Defensively Alba struggled to contain whoever was on Sevilla’s right wing at the time, and because Alba often failed to deal with the danger the Barcelona back-line was often in trouble. |
Sergio Busquets | 6.4 |
Minutes played: 90 Touches: 100 Passes: 89 Pass Accuracy: 96 % Tackles: 3 Interceptions: 4 Shots/Shots on Target: 0/0 Clearances: 1 Aerial Duels Won: 5 Turnovers: 0 Key passes: 1 Sam says: 7.5 Busquets certainly had his work cut out for him, having to prevent Sevilla from counterattacking pretty much all game and the two goals couldn’t really be blamed on him. On the first he allowed Banega space outside of the area where 9/10 players wouldn’t score from and the second he was caught upfield when Piqué misplaced his pass and in the 83rd minute, Busquets didn’t have the legs to run back fast enough. Other then that it was a stellar performance from him and without him you'd imagine Sevilla would have scored a lot more. |
Andres Iniesta | 5.9 |
Minutes played: 85 Touches: 89 Passes: 83 Pass Accuracy: 89 % Shots/Shots on Target: 2/2 Turnovers: 3 Key Passes: 0 Successful Dribbles : 2 Fouls Won: 3 Sam says: 7.0 Barça started the game brightly and Iniesta did too, being able to run forward and attack the box meant he could become more of a danger. But as the game wore on his defensive contribution increased as Sevilla looked to peg him and Rakitić back. The home side grew into the game and Iniesta was playing further back, needing to make tackles and interceptions to limit their attacks to a minimum. His passing was very good which helped Barça to retain the ball and breathe for a couple of minutes. |
Ivan Rakitić | 5.7 |
Minutes played: 67 Touches: 68 Passes: 58 Pass Accuracy: 95 % Shots/Shots on Target: 2 /0 Fouls Won: 1 Turnovers: 2 Tackles: 2 Key Passes: 0 Successful Dribbles : 0 Sam says: 6.5 With Sevilla flooding the midfield with five players, both Rakitić and Iniesta struggled to become as effective as they would’ve like to been. Rakitić in particular failed to get a firm hold of the game with his main attacking contribution coming from two shots that went wide. His passing was very accurate at 95% but he was limited to just 58 passes completed, while his midfield partners both completed over 80. A sign of the struggle Rakitić faced. |
Luis Suarez | 5.0 |
Minutes played: 90 Touches: 46 Passes: 33 Pass Accuracy: 85 % Shots/Shots on Target: 3/0 Turnovers: 4 Successful Dribbles: 0 Key Passes: 1 Fouls Won: 3 Tackles : 1 Bostjan says: 6.5 It seems like we just can't get both Suarez and Neymar firing on all cylinders in recent games. It's either one or the other, and it appears it was Suarez's time this time to miss his chances. The Uruguayan had a few excellent opportunities to put the game out of reach and in the end his misses came back to cost Barcelona two points. Suarez's movement remained excellent but his finishing let him down. |
Lionel Messi | 7.5 |
Minutes played: 90 Touches: 93 Passes: 72 Pass Accuracy: 86 % Shots/Shots on Target: 6/2 Fouls Won: 4 Successful Dribbles: 3 Key Passes: 1 Turnovers: 1 Tackles: 1 Bostjan says: 8.0 Throughout the game Messi found very little room to operate as Sevilla mainly focused on him, which allowed a bit more space to his teammates in attack. Still, Messi found some success, scoring another gorgeous curling goal with his left foot. But the fact that he was closed down so well meant that Messi wasn't as a creative force that he wanted to be. |
Neymar | 8.0 |
Minutes played: 73 Touches: 74 Passes: 56 Pass Accuracy: 89 % Shots/Shots on Target: 2/2 Fouls Won: 2 Key Passes: 5 Successful Dribbles : 6 Turnovers: 6 Bostjan says: 9.0 Does this game mean we've gotten Neymar back? It might be too early to actually say that, but this was a very encouraging showing. He was a constant threat to the Sevilla back-line, scoring a beautiful goal, his first for Barcelona from a free kick, and adding an assist in the process. While Neymar still lost the ball a few too many times for my liking, Barcelona's play suffered mightily after the young winger was taken off the pitch with about half an hour of play left. |
Xavi | 5.7 |
Minutes played: 27 Touches: 25 Passes: 21 Pass Accuracy: 95 % Key Passes : 1 Tackles: 1 Bostjan says: 7.0 Put on the pitch during the stretch in which Sevilla were having the attacking success Xavi was put on to basically step on the ball. It wasn't that Xavi failed at that task but he wasn't very successful either, even though he rarely lost possession. Barcelona might have maintained possession for most of the time Xavi was on the pitch, but there was little "control" on the pitch. |
Pedro | 5.2 |
Minutes played: 5 Touches: 5 Passes: 4 Pass Accuracy: 100 % Fouls Won : 1 Bostjan says: N/A Not on the pitch long enough to make an impact. |
The Team | 6.0 |
Passes: 752 Pass Accuracy: 89 % Shots/Shots on Target: 17 /7 Tackles: 17 Aerial Battles Won: 63 % Fouls Won/Committed: 9/23 Bostjan says: 6.5 It's difficult to give a ratings to a team that can dominate one of the hottest team in Europe, one with a fantastic home record, for 30 minutes but then suffers to get over the midfield line for the remaining hour. The opening stages of the game would've been a perfect ten for Barcelona had they just managed to score another goal or two, but then they go on and spoil it with a a couple individual mistakes that lead to a collective meltdown. |
Luis Enrique | 4.5 |
Bostjan says: 6.5 Lucho did many things right in this one. His preparation for the game was very good and his instructions for the players were very good, resulting in a dominant start. But after the Bravo mistake he failed to motivate the players in the dressing room resulting in a lackluster showing in the second half. He amplified the poor showing by taking off the only player that found continuous success against the Sevilla back-line. |
MOTM - Lionel Messi | 63% |
Bostjan says: Neymar With a Messi-esque run away victory Neymar topped the voting. It seems like ages ago Neymar was voted Man of the Match. Messi finished a distant second with 23%, and despite his massive mistake Pique entered into the top three with 4%. |
