The latest from the boss ahead of Alaves

Quique Setien spoke to the press for the last time ahead of a La Liga match in 2019-20 on Saturday morning to talk all things Barcelona.

The coach spoke about wanting to finish well after defeat to Osasuna and also opened up a little bit on his meeting with president Josep Maria Bartomeu yesterday.

Setien also talked about his future, the absence of Arthur from the matchday squad and responded to Lionel Messi’s post-match comments in midweek.

Here are the main points.

Setien on Alaves

It’s very important to end with better feelings. We can’t change what happened in the last game, but we can look to the future and we are focused on the game against Napoli.

Setien on meeting with Bartomeu

I think it’s normal to have meetings with the president. All of us want to improve and to try to change the situation. We talked about this, about preparing for the the future. We have to assume our responsibilities because we haven’t won La Liga but we know that we have a very attractive challenge ahead.

Setien on Messi’s comments

We agree in some aspects, others not, but this is normal. He is absolutely right that if we play as badly as we have in some games it won’t be enough to win. We are all aware that we have to improve, be more consistent and more reliable. If we can do it like in Villarreal, where almost everything went well, then of course we can win the Champions League.

This is a decision that we have to think about and take as a whole. In today’s call we have 16 players, with three goalkeepers, there are no more players available. They could play but we must think about the consequences of an injury to these players which could weaken us thinking about the Champions League.

Setien on Barca’s best level

Villarreal probably was our best game of the season, then in other games we have played really well. We are happy with lots of things but also know we have to improve. But you are not going to convince me that everything has been a disaster. We have deserved to win many more games and during the whole league we have done many things well.

Setien on Arthur not being in the squad

All I can say is that this morning he came and said that his ankle was bothering him.

Setien on if he’s thought about leaving

The day I arrived I said that I would enjoy until the last day. I continue to enjoy it despite the circumstances and I never thought this would be easy. Defeat is always an option to overcome. I am not living anything that I have not lived before. At no time have I had the feeling of wanting to leave.
