The former Bordeaux, France, and PSG manager could be an option
Quique Setién will not remain as Barcelona manager, unless he wins the UEFA Champions League. Xavi is the board’s #1 option to succeed him, but it’s unclear if the former captain will take the job. These are open secrets in Catalonia.
And now the latest rumor: Laurent Blanc could take over as manager if Xavi does not accept the board’s terms.
The former Bordeaux, France, and Paris Saint-Germain coach has been linked with the Camp Nou job several times in the past, but he’s not managed Barcelona, or indeed any team, since leaving PSG in 2016.
If Xavi remains in Qatar, Blanc could be a “bridge” for one year. Then, elections would come, and perhaps with it, a president who Xavi would be more comfortable working with, who would acquiesce to his demands for more control.
It’s hard to find a manager with a CV that includes teams like PSG and the French national team, who would agree to sign for only year guaranteed. But it seems Blanc is willing to take the risk, hoping he triumphs and extends his stay.
