Messi now has as many top scorer awards as anyone in Europe

With his seventh Pichichi Trophy, Lionel Messi went one clear of Alfredo Di Stéfano and Telmo Zarra, and became La Liga’s top scorer more times than anyone else in history.

In the process, he tied a legendary European record jointly held by two legends of the game: Gerd Müller and Eusébio.

The trio now have the most scoring titles won by any player in history in Europe’s top leagues, with seven each. Müller did it seven times in the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich, while Eusébio won the Bola de Prata (Portuguese league top scorer) award seven times with Benfica.

Jimmy Greaves won it the most times (6) in England.

A handful of players won it five times: Gunnar Nordahl (the most in Italy), Carlos Bianchi, Delio Onnis, and Jean-Pierre Papin (all tied for the most in France), and Ruud Geels (the most in the Netherlands.)

This season, Messi also tied the record for most assists in the top five European leagues in one season, held by a different Müller who also plays for Bayern: Thomas Müller.

Messi also became the second player ever in the top five European leagues to register at least 20 goals and at least 20 assists in a single season. Thierry Henry did it for Arsenal when he hit 24 goals and 20 assists, but Messi did one better: 25 goals and 21 assists.

The next record in sight for the Barcelona captain? Pelé’s historical record of most goals for a single club. O Rei netted 643 for Santos, while Messi has 633 for Barça.
