Should Luis Enrique’s Job Be on the Line?

Time to start asking the question.

Barcelona were unimpressive in a 2-1 win over relegation favorites CD Leganés, and this comes after a pathetic performance in which Paris Saint-Germain thrashed the Catalans 4-0 in the UEFA Champions League.

A return leg at the Camp Nou offers the slimmest of possibilities for a comeback against Paris, but, failing such a miracle, the question becomes: should Luis Enrique’s job be on the line in the middle of the season?

Luis Enrique has already been coy over signing a renewal, despite support from the locker room and the board room, at least outwardly. Him leaving at the end of the season looks all but assured unless Barcelona pull off something improbable in either La Liga or the Champions League. That would make for a sort of compromise: Luis Enrique leaves on his own terms, the fans thank him for their services, and everyone moves on.

But if results and performances continue at this level, there comes a point in which the coach could even be sacked. The problem is that great replacements are not in abundance at this stage of the season. Would a hypothetical replacement be good enough to give Barcelona a better chance than Luis Enrique?

That’s the biggest question that could keep Lucho on the coach’s bench even if things don’t improve dramatically. But in any case, unless the team shapes up quickly, things could turn ugly - including plenty of fan division.

Some will accuse the rest of not waking up to the grim reality that the coach is useless, while others will say pushing for the coach’s sack shows an unhelpful lack of loyalty. Let’s hope it doesn’t get to that point.
