Real Madrid-Barcelona Rivalry Leads to Flimsy Excuses about Copa del Rey Final Stadium

Just tell us the truth, Florentino Pérez!

Barcelona advanced to the Copa del Rey Final yet again, and once again, Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez has come out with flimsy excuses as to why the title decider cannot be played at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.

“The final cannot be played at the Bernabéu due to repairs,” Pérez insisted. But this is the same story we’ve been hearing for years, and no one is buying it.

Of course I can’t definitively prove it’s not simply a flimsy excuse, but it’s more or less seen that way by everyone in Spain. Is the repairman only available in late May, and only during the years when Barcelona make the Cup final?

The real reason must be that Real Madrid fans do not want to see Barcelona lift a trophy at their stadium. That’s honestly their right, as it is Pérez’s right to agree with those fans. It’s fine.

But why hide it? It’s time to be honest here.

Would Barcelona allow Real Madrid to play the final at the Camp Nou? Almost definitely not now that Madrid have denied them so often, but that’s not the point. I hope that if Barcelona ever get in the position to deny Madrid the Camp Nou year after year and then simply say it’s because they weren’t allowed at the Bernabéu and do not invent excuses.

The other finalists, Deportivo Alavés, want to play at Athletic Bilbao’s San Mamés, but that could be complicated by a Guns N’ Roses show scheduled to take place just three days after the final is expected to be played.

The Spanish Federation prefers the match be played at Atlético Madrid’s Vicente Calderón. This would be the last game ever played at the Calderón, as the team is moving to a new home for next season, and it would be a pretty nice sending off.
