Rumor Rater: Isco to Leave Real Madrid and Join FC Barcelona?

We take a look at how credible the suggestion is.

On the front cover of Mundo Deportivo: Isco Alarcón could follow in the steps of Luis Enrique and Samuel Eto’o and leave Real Madrid for FC Barcelona in the summer.

Manolo Lama, from the radio station COPE, has also hinted at a possible move to the Camp Nou for Isco.

It’s true that Isco hasn’t gotten a regular spot in the starting XI under Carlo Ancelotti, Rafa Benítez, or Zinedine Zidance since making his way from Málaga to the capital club.

There have been longstanding rumors that Isco was an FC Barcelona fan prior to signing for Madrid, in addition to the fact he named his dog Messi.

So the pieces are there for Isco to make a summer switch? Maybe.

Barcelona are currently stocked in the midfield, in quantity if not quality. A player would definitely have to be sold to fund such a move. And Barcelona would have to prefer Isco to other options, which is not a guarantee.

What it comes down to is this: it’s logical that Isco could leave. But Barcelona would be one of many suitors, and there’s little-to-no-evidence they’d be first in line. Manchester City seems particularly poised, given Isco almost signed with them before choosing Madrid. Juventus is another option.

And we don’t know who will be in charge of FC Barcelona come this summer. It could be Luis Enrique, but it seems likelier and likelier he will not be.

So it becomes highly unpredictable what the new coach would want, if indeed there is a new coach. Who he would sell and who he would buy... who knows?

For all we know, Isco could be using a potential move to Barcelona as the ultimate threat to make Madrid value him more.

While this rumor is plausible, it’s likely that there is no information beyond the basic facts that Isco could very well leave, and Barcelona is one of many teams that could potentially buy him.
