The Juventus defender has long been on the Catalans’ wishlist
FC Barcelona are starting to plan for next season, and one player whose name is making the rounds as far as transfer targets now is Matthijs de Ligt. The Juventus defender has long been wanted by Barcelona. In fact, the Catalans made a push for him after his breakout season at AFC Ajax, only for him to choose the “Old Lady of Italian football” instead.
According to a new report, De Ligt is liked both by manager Ronald Koeman and new club president Joan Laporta. The 21-year-old has established himself as a starter for Juve, and it would take a good offer for Barcelona to pry him away.
Barça see him as a potential partner to another young central defender they are getting next summer: Manchester City’s Eric García. Plus, he would have a friend in the dressing room in Frenkie De Jong, who played with him at Ajax.
The main problem is cost. Barcelona are already trying to chase one of Europe’s most expensive transfer targets in Erling Haaland, and have spent so much in the past few years.
The Catalans already have Ronald Araújo, Óscar Mingueza, Clément Lenglet, Gerard Piqué, and Samuel Umtiti in defense, although some could leave (particularly Umtiti) and if Barcelona continues to use a three-man line, they will continue to need plenty of centerbacks.
