Is Bartomeu sweating or is he relieved?
Agusti Benedito’s motion of no confidence vote against FC Barcelona’s president Josep Maria Bartomeu has officially collected 2,920 signatures so far. This came after FC Barcelona’s first home game since signatures started being collected, which ended in a 5-0 triumph over Espanyol.
Benedito had announced he had 14,000 people pledging their support for the movement. Getting those 14,000 who had committed to actually sign is the first step. Next comes getting the additional people to reach the necessary 16,570 to trigger recall elections.
While 2,920 is surely a lot, time is going to run out quickly if they don’t continue getting signatures by the thousands. The deadline is in dispute, with the club maintaining he only has until September 26, while Benedito himself saying he has until October 2nd. This is because Benedito does not count Saturdays, while the club maintains it’s always been the policy to include Saturdays.
If he has until October 2nd, that would give him three more games at the Camp Nou: Juventus, Eibar, and Las Palmas. If he pulls 3,000 at each, that’s a total of 12,000. He still needs another 4,570 to make up elsewhere. Socis can sign any day, but home match days are the most obvious time to pick up signatures. It’s possible, but perhaps it’s an underwhelming start.
