Three questions from Barcelona's win over Girona

Another three points, but plenty to talk about

Why did Valverde leave Semedo out again?

Barcelona made the short trip to Girona without either Nelson Semedo or Gerard Deulofeu but it was the full-back's omission which raised the most eyebrows.

Semedo was been superb since signing for the Blaugrana this summer and has drawn comparisons to Dani Alaves already.

However, it's not the first time Valverde has left him out and you get the feeling it might not be the last.

Was it simply to keep him fresh for the Champions League clash with Sporting in midweek? Or is Valverde simply trying to ease him into life at Barcelona?

Maybe Valverde is simply keen to fully utilise his squad?

Of course there have also been suggestions that he's been left out as Barca are keen to avoid paying the extra €5m that will be due if plays 50 games for the club this season.

Whatever the reason it seems that Semedo is already Barca's best option at right-back - let’s hope he returns on Wednesday.

Did Aleix Vidal do enough to impress Valverde?

Valverde started Vidal on the right of the attack alongside Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez and he played a key role in the second goal.

It was a decent showing from Vidal and will certainly have given Valverde food for thought with regards his attack in the continued absence of Ousmane Dembele.

However, while Barca did score three and won the game, the attack was far from fluent and it will be interesting to see who Valverde goes with in midweek.

Deulofeu’s omission from the squad suggests he will return for Sporting, but Vidal’s performance certainly gives Barca other options.

Will more teams try to man-mark Messi now?

After a stunning start to the season, Lionel Messi had a frustrating night at Montilivi and a lot of that was due to Pablo Maffeo who was given the job of man-marking the Argentine.

The youngster did a fine job of keeping Messi quiet, following him just about everywhere and it was rare to see the Barca legend handled in such a way.

Speaking after the match Valverde insisted the man-marking had helped Barca as it had given them space in other areas - but might it be a tactic more teams try now?
