Barça want to have many alternatives ready and learn lessons from last summer
FC Barcelona is preparing a long list of defenders to pursue in the future, according to a report from Francesc Aguilar in Mundo Deportivo. He says the club wants to learn from mistakes made in the past summer transfer window, and keep several options open.
So whether or not Yerry Mina or Marlon Santos are part of the team next season, Barça are looking at several defenders, especially as Javier Mascherano, Thomas Vermaelen, and Gerard Pique are getting older.
Robert Fernandez is said to admire Matthijs de Ligt (Ajax, 18 years old) and Dayot Upamecano (RB Leipzig, 18 years old). Both are considered the prime targets if the team wants to sign another young defender.
Malang Sarr (OGC Nice, 18) NIcklas Sule (Bayern Munich, 21), Jonathan Tah (Bayer Leverkusen, 20), and Allesio Romagnoli (Milan, 22) are also on the list, but they’re not as high as De Ligt and Upamecano.
On the other hand, Barcelona could opt for a slightly older, more complete player. There’s Aymeric Laporte, whom Ernesto Valverde knows from their time together at Athletic Bilbao. There’s also Iñigo Martinez (Real Sociedad), a player Valverde really likes and Barcelona almost signed last summer.
Virgil van Dijk (Southampton) is another potential target, one that Liverpool had been heavily linked with.
Some younger players considered ready to step up are Yeray Alvarez (Athletic, 22) and Emanuel Mammana (Zenit St. Petersburg, 21).
Another possibility would be going with a steady veteran like Kamil Glick (AS Monaco, 29).
Will Barça improve upon last summer, or will they fail to learn their lesson?
