A necessary victory after the struggles the team has faced recently.
After struggling for the last couple of games, one can be forgiven for assuming this game was also going to be less than perfect for the blaugranas. Barcelona was utterly savaged by PSG and struggled heavily to take command of a game against one of the weaker teams of La Liga in Leganes. The midfield has basically been non-existent for the entirety of this season, but has been particularly atrocious for the past couple of weeks. The downfall, regrettably, began just when Barcelona seemed to be finding their feet, due in large part to the return to form of Aleix Vidal, precisely whose injury shoved Barcelona back into that terrible football abyss. For this reason, therefore, it was worrisome to see a struggling Barcelona team facing the hard-nosed Atlético.
This in no way to suggest Barcelona’s only problem is not having a right back. It is a big reason, certainly, but there have been many problems this season. Regardless, the team has been staying viable in every competition and, despite the stumble in the Champions League, is still a candidate for a double this year, which is not bad at all. Perhaps Luis Enrique will start implementing better formations and strategy, and Real Madrid will almost certainly drop points. Unless, of course, the fix proves to be drastically insurmountable, as was evident in that embarrassing display of refereeing in Real Madrid’s game against Villarreal. One hopes the attention being brought to these instances of cheating by players like Piqué will prove enough.
Irish Goat’s Gamboling Goleadores!
1st Goleador: MAtS
There is a struggle within me of epic proportions. It constitutes the desire to win every single match beating every opponent we face, and watching ter Stegen make save after ridiculous save. He has had stretches where he has played very well, and stretches where he has been rather disappointing, but I think we are finally seeing the realization of all the potential for which he was purchased by the team. Lauded as one of the young, future talents in goal, MAtS has been playing out of this world for the last few games. He was easily the man of the match against Atlético.
2nd Goleador: Neymar
Everything, absolutely everything was expected of Neymar as the future of Barcelona. A player of tremendous skill and easily the successor of Messi as the best player in the world, much was hoped he would achieve as a fixture of the best team in the world. It is, therefore, very pleasing to see Neymar playing tremendous football and being night in and night out one of the best players for Barcelona.
3rd Goleador: Three at the back
Hey, it might have not been perfect, but it was surprisingly solid. Barcelona has not been the best defensive team this season; not by a long shot. They were good defensively in this game however. The goal came from a set play, which continues to be a weakness for this team, but if you focus on regular play, they were surprisingly solid, to be quite honest. Perhaps not a long-term solution, but certainly a viable option.
As always Visca Barça!
