Chapecoense President: Barcelona The Only European Team To Donate Money After Tragedy

When “mes que un club” is not just a slogan.

After tragedy struck Brazilian club Chapecoense, there was talk of many European clubs providing financial assistance, but only one followed through - FC Barcelona. That’s according to Chape’s president Plínio David De Nes in an interview with Fox Sports Argentina.

Chapecoense was the club which suffered a plane crash in which 71 people died, including most of the team’s players and staff.

De Nes said: “Only Barcelona was our partner from the very start. Generously, they made a large amount of funds available for us and in August they invited us to play the Joan Gamper Trophy. The profit from the match will be shared with Chape.”

The Chapecoense president also said AS Roma had offered to play a friendly with Chape, but that may not take place because of the Brazilian club’s packed schedule.

Well done to Barcelona for living up to their motto: “mes que un club!”
