Take a look...
Barcelona completed a mission so impossible even Tom Cruise would cry, winning 6-1 against Paris Saint-Germain to go through 6-5 on aggregate in the UEFA Champions League.
Without a doubt, there was a titanic effort on part of the Catalans, but did PSG play a role themselves by psyching themselves out? A new video gives us a little insight.
The video, produced by Bros. Stories, was uploaded on March 7th, in between PSG’s 4-0 hammering of Barcelona and their eventual downfall. Part of a series called “Supper Club”, it features PSG’s Marco Verratti, Julian Draxler, Thomas Meunier and Blaise Matuidi discussing football over dinner.
The four first talk about the length of the Camp Nou pitch, awed by how difficult it is to cover. Matuidi insists the opening 20 minutes are crucial, which seems a little crazy for a team that is defending a 4-0 lead. It probably did not help to say the 20 minutes are so important and then concede in minute 2.
Then, Julian Draxler mentions losing to Real Madrid as a member of VfL Wolfsburg. The Germans had won the first leg 2-0, but lost at the Santiago Bernabeu 3-0. Nothing exactly prompted it, his teammates at first are a little confused why Real Madrid is even brought up. Seems a bit odd, doesn’t it?
Draxler even says: “"I think the coach and the team were afraid. Because we didn't attack." Sound like a premonition yet?
Matuidi then starts recalling when he and Veratti won 3-1 against Chelsea and lost the second leg 0-2, getting knocked out on away goals.
Matuidi: "3-1, you think it's all good, we are qualified. When we landed there, I think we were were afraid, we didn't attack."
He even got the situation dead-on... 3-1 up, thinking it’s all qualified, but afraid, not willing to attack. It’s a perfect summation of the game that hadn’t happened yet.
Um... good talk everyone?
I know that perhaps had PSG won the second leg, we would have said that maybe it showed that they learned from past mistakes and remained alert and whatever.
But... they didn’t, and that brings the video to a whole new light.
It’s crazy to think about, but not only did Barcelona believe in the comeback, but so did PSG.
