Report: Aleix Vidal not transfer listed after meeting with Barcelona director

He's not in the plans, but he is part of the plans!

One of the forgotten players in the Barcelona squad has been subject of transfer talks, but he won't be leaving. At least for now.

Mundo Deportivo reports that reserve full-back Aleix Vidal had a meeting with sporting director Robert Fernández earlier this week to discuss his place on the squad. Vidal is clearly out of Luis Enrique's plans at the moment, having played only once all season and being cut from the squad list in the last five official matches.

Vidal has had a very tough time adapting to the club ever since joining a year ago. He couldn't play until January 2016 because of the FIFA transfer ban, and struggled to become an important piece of the squad ever since he began to play. He had quite a few good performance in the first two or three months, but quickly became a forgotten piece in the squad, and only Douglas Pereira had fewer appearances than Aleix this calendar year.

But Robert reassured Vidal he can still fight his way back into Enrique's plans, and his performances in training will lead to opportunities on the pitch, and he could then become a rotation player in the coming months. Various reports have said Vidal struggles with the speed and intensity of the training sessions, which leads to poor performances in games.

Despite strong links to a Serie A transfer in the winter transfer window, Vidal was told by Robert that he still has a chance. He just needs to work for it.

Report: Barcelona defender Jeremy Mathieu retires from international football

Out of nowhere!

So this came out of absolutely nowhere, and it's somewhat shocking news after a fiasco on Friday.

According to a report from Mundo Deportivo, Jérémy Mathieu has retired from international football, and sent a statement to the French Federation about his decision. The Barcelona center-back will be replaced by Valencia's Eliaquim Mangala in France's next two international matches.

Mathieu's decision is a surprise, but it's understandable after a very strange situation that developed on Friday. Mathieu was called up by France manager Didier Deschamps to represent Les Bleus in the European Qualifying matches against Bulgaria (October 7) and Netherlands (October 10) next month. Barça full-back Lucas Digne was also named in France's squad.

Then, a few hours after releasing the list, the French Federation announced that Mathieu was pulled out from the games after a "conversation" between Deschamps and the player. As soon as that announcement came out, Mathieu decided to retire, and communicated his decision to the national team officials.

The 33-year-old missed out on Euro 2016 despite working hard to recover from a serious knee injury in time to play the European Championships. Mathieu doesn't think he'll be a key piece of the squad and make it to the 2018 World Cup in Russia, so his decision to not play for France anymore is understandable. But it's surprising.

FC Barcelona News: 30 September 2016; Focus Turns to Celta Vigo, Neymar to Sue Brazilian Court

FC Barcelona start training for Sunday's trip to Balaídos | FC Barcelona
The FC Barcelona first team were back at work on Friday morning. Luis Enrique had given them the day off on Thursday after returning from Germany with three more Champions League points in the bag. But with the batteries recharged, it’s now time to switch focus back to La Liga and Sunday’s visit to Celta's Balaídos stadium for what will be the third consecutive road trip and the last fixture before club action takes a week off for the next set of internationals.

Luis Enrique, Denis and Rafinha return to Balaídos | FC Barcelona
Luis Enrique is also connected to the Galician club as he managed them during the 2013/14 season. Although he was only there for a year the team finished an impressive ninth in La Liga. The mid-table finish was particularly welcome having avoided relegation on the last day of the season the year before. During that season, a current member of the squad spent the campaign on loan at Celta.

He was only on for the last half hour of the game in Mönchengladbach, and yet still found time to score his fifth goal in nine games and do more than enough to be named UEFA Man of the Match. With Barça trailing when he came on, the goal was the turning point in a game that the Catalans ended up winning to take outright top spot in Champions League Group C.

FC Barcelona v Borussia Mönchengladbach: By the numbers | FC Barcelona
The victory at Borussia-Park makes this the best start to a Champions League group stage for Barça under Luis Enrique with two victories in two matches. OFFICIAL: Five Barcelona players named in Spain national team squad for World Cup Qualifiers

Iniesta is back!

The international break is horrible, but our favorite club players do like to play for their national teams. And five Barcelona stars will represent Spain next month.

Gerard Piqué, Sergi Roberto, Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets and Andrés Iniesta have all been named in the 23-man squad that will play for La Roja in the European Qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup, against Italy (October 6) and Albania (October 9). Iniesta is called up by new manager Julen Lopetegui for the first time, since was injured and couldn't play earlier this month.

All five Barça stars are expected to start in this international break, which clearly shows manager Julen Lopetegui has full confidence in the Blaugrana players. Sergi Roberto is not only the starting right-back at Barça, but he won that position with the national team as well, which shows that his evolution as a full-back translates into the international level. So there's no denying that Roberto is a great right-back, haters!

Piqué, Alba, Busquets and Iniesta have been starters for La Roja for a huge part of the last decade, and remain integral pieces of the team even in the Lopetegui Era, which got off to a sensational start thanks to an 8-0 thrashing of Lichtenstein in the first Qualifying match three weeks ago.

How should Barcelona line up on Sunday's La Liga match against Celta Vigo?

Let's choose the starters!

The international break is upon us, and life sucks. Why do we need to stop club football just when things are heating up? Why do we need to have national teams hurting our players and forcing them to miss matches for the team we love? But the internationals will leave next week, and there's no stopping it.

But Barcelona will get to play one more match before the break, and it takes place on Sunday night in Spain, at the Balaídos against Celta Vigo. Barça lost 4-1 there a year ago, one of the worst losses in recent Blaugrana history, which just comes to show how tough this game will be.

The Catalans are in good form, however, having beaten Borussia Mönchengladbach on the road in a tough Champions League match, arriving with plenty of confidence for the final game of a three-match road trip.

Luis Enrique used his strongest possible team in Germany, but since the game is on Sunday and the player had a day off on Thursday, he might use a very similar lineup. But what would be your lineup? We ask you to please fill out the attached form with your favorite starting eleven for Sunday's match. You can also use the comment section below to share your lineups. Have fun!

Report: Barcelona coach Luis Enrique's plans for Lionel Messi, Samuel Umtiti returns from injury

Lucho will carefully manage his players as they return to play in a huge week of football

Barcelona will play on Sunday their final match without two key first team players, as Lionel Messi and Samuel Umtiti will not be ready to return from injury as Barça take on Celta Vigo in a big La Liga match away from home.

The two players will stay in Barcelona through the international break and step up their recoveries in order to be ready to return to the pitch on October 15, when Barça face Deportivo La Coruña at Camp Nou. Just four days later, the Catalan giants face Manchester City in a gigantic Champions League game, and looking ahead to that game, manager Luis Enrique will be carefull with the two players and their minutes.

According to a report from Diario Sport, Umtiti (knee) will start against Deportivo and probably play 90 minutes, since he'll be fully recovered and ready for a full game. Umtiti's start will give Javier Mascherano a chance to rest, since he will play for Argentina and will return from South America just two days before the Depor match, exhausted and without training. Mascherano will probably start against City, with Umtiti covering for him on the weekend.

Messi's case needs more attention because it's MESSI, of course. He will be fit to start against Depor since his groin injury will be fully healed by then, but Enrique wants Leo to be at 110% for the City game, and according to Sport, Messi will only play 30 minutes in the second half to get some game action and warm up for Pep Guardiola's visit to Camp Nou.

The report also says Lucho will make a deep rotation in his squad, resting most of the international, especially those from South America. The last time he did that, Barça lost to Alavés, but Enrique trusts his system and will do it again. With Umtiti as starter, and Messi as a reserve.

Borussia Mönchengladbach 1-2 Barcelona, 2016 Champions League: 3 Things We Learned

A few takeaways from a hard-fought victory in Germany

Barcelona are still yet to drop points in the Champions League group stage after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach in Germany. The Blaugrana didn't have a great game, but never stopped believing and scored two second half goals to earn a vital victory.

Here's a few takeaways from what we saw at Borussia-Park:

1 - Barça CAN win playing badly

For the longest time, Barça would have poor performances and just couldn't dig deep and find a way to win. Wednesday showed that the team actually CAN pull off tough victories, and that's a huge thing. It shows character, will to win and a desire to keep chasing a result even though the usual methods that lead to victories aren't working. This fighting spirit and determination was one of Luis Enrique's best qualities as a player, and he translated that into his coaching style. Barça play such beautiful football most of the time that we forget how gritty this team is. But when push comes to shove, they'll fight hard and win.

2 - Paco Alcácer needs time, maybe lots of it

The summer signing started for the first time in the Champions League, and he had a tough time, playing poorly for 50 minutes until he was replaced by Rafinha. Paco struggled to fully understand Lucho's instructions and looked lost sometimes. He worked hard and moved a lot without the ball, but that isn't enough. He has to improve, and he will, but that might take quite a while to happen. Of all the signings, he'll take the longest to adapt because a forward in Barça's system is different than in any other team. Plus, he has to deal with the pressure of replacing one of the 'MSN' members every time he steps on the pitch, and he might struggle with that. But as the Arda Turan Saga clearly shows, a talented player who works eventually finds his spot on the team. Lucho never gave up on Arda, and he won't give up on Paco either. Let's just give him time.

3 - Gerard Piqué is incredible

Every time we try to forget Geri in the "best defender in the world" conversation, he puts himself back in the talk. Forget the game-winning goal that rescued the team on Wednesday and Piqué still had a masterful performance on defense. His awareness and sense of anticipation are amazing, and he's as good as any center-back on Earth to stop players in one-on-one situations. He isn't fast by any means, but he's really freaking smart. And really freaking good. The best in the world.

Borussia Mönchengladbach 1-2 Barcelona, 2016 Champions League: Player Ratings

LEONIDAS OF THE MATCH!

Barcelona escaped Germany with a very important 2-1 victory against Borussia Mönchengladbach, which puts the Blaugrana in the top spot of Group C in the Champions League after two matches. It wasn't a vintage performance by any means, but the Catalans fought hard and earned three huge points.

These are our ratings for the thirteen players that took part on Wednesday's win:

Starters

Ter Stegen (7) - Couldn't do anything in Thorgan Hazard's goal, and was solid in buildup play when requested to pass in the second half. Solid game from MATS.

Sergi Roberto (6) - Not his best game, but nothing bad either. Couldn't run forward as much as he wanted too, but did his job defensively and held his own.

Piqué (8) - Geri is incredible, and was again on Wednesday. Couldn't do anything on the goal, scored the game-winner and did a great job defensively.

Mascherano (7) - Masche's anticipation skills are great, but sometimes he does it too much and opens up space for the opponent, which happened a couple of times. He was good, though, and his yellow card was ironically the highlight of his performance, because it stopped a very dangerous attack and settled the defense.

Alba (6) - Same as Roberto, had to defend a lot more than he wanted to but did it nicely. His best game is going forward, but he couldn't so he didn't have too much of an impact.

Busquets (5.5) - Surprisingly poor game from Busi, thanks in part to an insane pressure from the Gladbach attackers. Pressing Sergio to try and force him into a mistake was the clear plan from Andre Schubert, and it was exactly what led to Gladbach's goal. Busi's passing wasn't as sharp and he wasn't great defensively.

Rakitic (5) - Rakitic was very bad, in almost all aspects. His passing was poor, his transition left a lot to be desired, and his involvement in attack came down to poor long distance shots. The team improved without him, which is a worrying sign.

Iniesta (6) - Not bad, not good, not amazing, not horrible. Just a discrete performance from the captain, something he won't remember but nothing garbage either. Iniesta was just kind of there.

Paco Alcácer (5) - He's learning the style, he's trying really hard, but it's too early for Paco to have any kind of impact. He needs time more than any of the new signings because the job of a Barça forward is very different from any other team's forward. He'll get better, but he was bad on Wednesday.

Suárez (7) - Was directly involved in the second goal, and did the thing that the stats don't count: effort. Luisito didn't score but worked his butt off, which was important to the win.

Neymar (7) - Fantastic assist to Arda Turan, great cross into Suárez that led to the second goal. Quiet for the rest of the game, but involved in both goals to win the game. That's a decisive player, people.

Substitutes

Rafinha (6.5) - Much better than Paco, worked hard, but did nothing really special. But the team was better with him, so it counts.

Arda Turan (8) - Is this really Arda Turan? The guy who couldn't be a midfielder three months ago is now perhaps the most in-form player in that position, and he continues to score goals and affect games in various ways. Arda has arrived, which is fantastic news.

Luis Enrique (8) - It's easy to blame him for playing Paco, but he couldn't anticipate such a bad game from Alcácer. His two substitutions were important and one of them scored to bring the team back into the game, and the locker room talk clearly led to a better performance in the second half. That's the coach's impact, definitely.

The Team (6.5) - Very, very, very subpar performance, but it was a win against a team that was literally undefeated in their home for the last several months. It was a win of heart more than brain, but it was a win anyway.

Man of the Match: Arda Turan (2nd: Gerard Piqué)

Luis Enrique, Barcelona players react to Champions League victory against Borussia Mönchengladbach

Happy Barça players on social media!

Barcelona pulled off a comeback victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach in their Champions League clash a Borussia-Park, with the Blaugrana scoring two late goals to pick a very important win on the road to stay at the top of Group C.

Barça players took to social media after the game to spread their joy to the followers. Here's some of their reactions:

***

***

"Always believe until the end! With my favorite Turk! How great are you, Arda!"

***

***

"Very valuable victory in Germany. Great job!! Let's keep getting better!"

***

***

"Very important victory away from home! Good reaction from the whole team!"

***

"Three important points."

Coach Luis Enrique also spoke after the game, and he was very proud of his players for their efforts and the comeback. Here's a few of Lucho's quotes:

“We thought they would put deep pressure on us, but they didn’t. They just stuck eleven men behind the ball in the first half. We still had three or four great chances, but they got their transitions spot on to score against us.”

“They started with a five-man defence and two defensive wingers - they certainly kept it tight at the back. But they weren’t used to doing that, while we are more than used to playing against ultra-defensive teams. Most teams change their way of playing when they face us.”

“We switched our positions in the second half and the subs did a great job. We were fair winners. Strategy was the key to a win that has done us a lot of good.”

“Rafinha and Arda were clear examples of why we need all of the players, regardless of whether they start the game or come on in the second half.”

“We deserved the win because of the hard work that the players put in against a team that has not lost at home for a very long time.”

"Piqué played well, but so did all the team. He always plays well, he’s a vital player, a key element of the team. He is great at getting the ball forward and defends brilliantly."

"You always learn from every game, whatever the final result. And there are always things to improve.”

“All of my players are very, very confident. I’m happy with all of their performances.”

"The aim is to finish top of the group, not to speculate. We want to win every game, but we also know how hard this group is going to be.”

Borussia Mönchengladbach 1-2 Barcelona, 2016 Champions League: Match Review

A detailed recap of Barcelona's comeback victory in Germany

Barcelona remain perfect in the Champions League group stage after two games following a 2-1 comeback victory in Germany against Borussia Mönchengladbach. The Blaugrana needed two second half goals from Arda Turan and Gerard Piqué to win after struggling throughout the match, but facing such a good team in a very tough atmosphere, the Catalan giants will celebrate the three points regardless of the quality of performance.

Statistics

Possession: Gladbach 29.6% - Barcelona 60.4%

Shots (on target): Gladbach 8 (1) - Barcelona 11 (8)

Offsides: Gladbach 1 - Barcelona 2

Fouls: Gladbach 8 - Barcelona 10

Corners: Gladbach 2 - Barcelona 5

Yellow Cards: Gladbach 0 - Barcelona 3 (Neymar, Piqué, Mascherano)

Luis Enrique made a surprising selection in his starting lineup, choosing to play Paco Alcácer in place of Lionel Messi, with Arda Turan and Rafinha Alcântara, who were most likely to start, on the bench. Enrique wanted presence in the box and set up his team on a diamond formation, with Neymar playing in front of the midfield three as a creator for Alcácer and Luis Suárez.

Barça had possession for most of the half, but struggled to find any spaces due to a combination of very good marking from Gladbach and poor passing in the final third from the Blaugrana, who had only one true chance in the first half-hour when Neymar found himself free in the box and took a weak shot right into the hands of Yan Sommer.

Gladbach were happy to concede possession and hit Barça on the counter, and being the best counter-attacking team in German football, Borussia were naturally very dangerous whenever they countered with their three main attackers (Raffael, Stindl and Hazard). Mahmoud Dahoud was immense in the first half, and he created the first goal of the match almost all by himself, first stealing the ball from Sergio Busquets, running alongside Raffael on the counter, and then playing a perfect pass to Thorgan Hazard, who scored a tap-in to put the hosts in front.

Luis Suárez had a very good chance almost immediately after Gladbach's goal with a great volley from a Ivan Rakitic cross, but Sommer was prepared and saved the shot to keep Gladbach in front going into the first half.

*****

Luis Enrique came back from halftime with the same team from the first half, but after watching his team struggle again, he made a quick change when Rafinha replaced Paco Alcácer, and the Brazilian looked much better and made a good impact on the Blaugrana, who began to dominate the game and looked closer to an equalizer as the minutes went on.

Arda Turan came on in place of Rakitic to add more flair and attacking intent to the side, and the Turkish made a great impact, making a smart run to the box, receiving a very good lobbed pass from Neymar, and firing a rocket past Sommer to the top corner to tie the game for Barça. Arda looked confident and the goal helped calm the rest of the team down, and the Catalans were really in control, playing some good football at times. It wasn't great, but it was enough to force Gladbach into defending very deep, and Borussia didn't have any real chances on the counter for the rest of the game.

But Barça still needed a game-winner, and it came. A corner-kick from Neymar found Suárez alone in the box but the Uruguayan shot the ball right at Sommer. The Gladbach keeper failed to control the ball, however, and it fell to the right foot of Gerard Piqué, who put himself in front of his defender, took one touch to control the ball and then scored the second to put the Blaugranes in front.

After taking the lead, the Blaugranes went into control mode, keeping possession for the majority of the final minutes and patiently waiting for the clock to run out. In the end, a poor overall performance, but an acceptable one given the atmosphere and the quality of Gladbach's team in the game. The most impressive thing about Barça wasn't the football, but the character. The Catalans never stopped fighting, kept chasing the result and got with true determination and grit. This "never say die" attitude was missing from the side before Lucho came in, and had Barça played this badly a few years go, they would've lost without putting too much of a fight. In this one, they fought hard.

Beautiful Barça didn't win, Warrior Barça did. And a victory is a victory after all.

Borussia Mönchengladbach vs Barcelona, 2016 Champions League: Final score 1-2, Second half comeback seals points for Barça

A hard fought victory

Barcelona needed two second half goals to over come a one-goal deficit to defeat Borussia Mönchengladbach, 2-1, on Wednesday in the Champions League. With the win, Barça stay atop Group C with a full six out of six possible points. It wasn’t easy by any means, but a gritty and hard fought performance in front of a raucous Borussia-Park away crowd was enough to earn an impressive win against a good team.

FIRST HALF

Barça began the match on the front foot, putting the pressure on the hosts early. They mustered two clear-cut scoring chances in the first 10 minutes with Neymar having a shot from close range saved by Sommer and Suarez blazing a good chance over the bar.

The missed opportunities would come back to cost the Blaugrana as the hosts took the lead just after the half-hour mark thanks to Thorgan Hazard, who finished off a very nice team move with a simple tap-in off a layoff pass, leaving Marc-Andre ter Stegen helpless.

The pressure continued after the goal with Suarez again causing havoc inside the BMG box, but unable to push the ball over the line to equalize.

SECOND HALF

It took only eight minutes into the second half for Luis Enrique to make a change to his team as he brought on Rafinha for Paco Alcacer, however it didn’t seem to provide the spark he was hoping for and neither side created much in the opening 15 minutes.

Finally, near the hour mark, Barcelona broke through and leveled the match. A chipped ball into the box found Arda Turan in stride. His strike from the right side of the box lashed over Sommer’s head and into the net to tie the match at 1.

Just eight minutes later, Gerard Pique poked in a rebound off a Luis Suarez shot attempt to give Barça the 2-1 lead and a dramatic comeback.

It was a very tough match, but they got the job done in a tough away environment. Well done.

FC Barcelona News: 28 September 2016; Players Train at Borussia-Park, Ready for Champions League Return

Training at Borussia-Park | FC Barcelona
FC Barcelona take on Borussia Monchengladbach on Wednesday (kick off 8.45pm CET), and the players were able to familiarise themselves with the surface on Tuesday. The Borussia-Park is a notorious stamping ground for the German side, one where Barça will have to bring their A-game to get a good result.

Match preview: Borussia Mönchengladbach v FC Barcelona | FC Barcelona
FC Barcelona take on Borussia Mönchengladbach on Matchday 2 of the Champions League, with Luis Enrique’s side looking to put an end to the hosts' eleven-match winning-streak and remain leaders of Group C. Barça recorded their biggest ever win in Europe’s elite competition last time out against Celtic (7-0) but Gladbach’s solid start to the season means this will be no walk in the Borussia-Park.

Luis Enrique: Gladbach are fearsome at home | FC Barcelona
FC Barcelona face a tough challenge when they visit Borussia Park on Wednesday, knowing that Mönchengladbach have not lost there since 26 January. Luis Enrique is well aware of the difficulty of the second Group C game of the season, describing the Germans’ home as "fearsome". Here is what he said to the media.

Ter Stegen looking forward to ‘special’ homecoming | FC Barcelona
FC Barcelona’s meeting with Borussia Mönchengladbach will be slightly more special for one particular individual than for anyone else .Barça keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen had been with the club from the age of six, right up until the summer of 2014 when he made the move to Catalonia. Returning to his hometown to face the club of his life, the German stopper spoke to the press about what the match means to him. Here is the pick of what he said.

Borussia Mönchengladbach: The foals galloping on the European stage | FC Barcelona
The first part of one of the longest names in European football comes from the Latin name for the former kingdom of Prussia. The name of the city, located just 20km from the Dutch border, used to be Gladbach, and the München part was added in 1888 to avoid confusion with another town of the same name. But this led people to wrongly assume that it was a suburb of Munich, so the ü was changed to an ö.

Barcelona's Andres Iniesta is the world's best player - Cesar Luis Menotti - ESPN FC
Former Barcelona coach Cesar Luis Menotti believes Andres Iniesta is the best player in the world, while he claims Lionel Messi would not have the talent he does today had he come through the ranks at Real Madrid. While Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have long battled it out for the tag of the greatest player in modern football, Menotti, who managed Barca between 1983 and 1984, feels Iniesta is more deserving of that title.

Bravo Barcelona! Blaugrana right to sacrifice Chilean for Ter Stegen - Goal.com
This time was inevitably going to come. When Barcelona signed Claudio Bravo and Marc-Andre ter Stegen as replacements for Victor Valdes in the summer of 2014, the Chilean was the experienced head in La Liga, the German a man for the future. So letting the South American leave merely means that things have gone to plan.

The best goals of the week from La Masia | FC Barcelona
Thankfully at FC Barcelona, there is never a lack of talent wherever you look. The youngsters throughout the various youth categories have once again caught the eye this past week with some fine goals. Take a look at the amazing goals scored by Héctor Fort (U11), Jordi Emboula (U19), Jesús Alfaro (Barça B), Seung-Woo Lee (U19) and Quim Junyent (U9). Whose was chosen as the best? Andre Schurrle's late goal for Dortmund holds Madrid to draw - ESPN
Andre Schurrle's late equaliser helped Borussia Dortmund claim a 2-2 draw against Group F rivals Real Madrid at the Westfalenstadion. Ronaldo grabbed his 95th Champions League goal when his first-time effort beat Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Burki to give the visitors a 1-0 lead, but Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang equalised just before half-time.

Real Madrid's third straight draw angers Zinedine Zidane - ESPN FC
Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane said he felt "screwed" after his team again conceded a late equaliser in Tuesday's thrill-a-minute 2-2 Champions League Group F draw at Borussia Dortmund. The see-saw battle saw Cristiano Ronaldo finish a sweeping counter-attack to put Madrid in front, then Dortmund back on level terms when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored after a Keylor Navas error.

Wissam Ben Yedder fires Sevilla to Group H win versus Lyon - ESPN
Wissam Ben Yedder's second-half goal gave Sevilla a 1-0 home win over Lyon in Champions League Group H on Tuesday. The French striker struck eight minutes after the break to ensure the reigning Europa League holders maintained their strong start in Europe's premier club competition.

Iborra renews at Sevilla | Football Espana
Sevilla have confirmed that Vicente Iborra has committed his future to the club by signing a new deal until 2020. Iborra, who was heavily linked with a move to English Premier League side Sunderland over summer, was appointed as captain of the Andalucian club earlier this month and has played 137 games for the club to date.

Valencia close in on Prandelli | Football Espana
Valencia are reportedly close to announcing Cesare Prandelli as their new manager to replace the sacked Pako Ayestaran. The club are keen to get the former Italian national team manager in as quickly as possible after being informed by the RFEF that their number one target Marcelino would not be able to take the reigns due to his spell at Villarreal running into this season.

Granada sack Jemez | Football Espana
Paco Jemez has been sacked by Granada after only six games in charge, the club have confirmed in a statement. Jemez was only appointed as boss of El Grana in June after his four year spell at Rayo Vallecano came to an end when the Vallecas-based club were relegated but after collecting only two points from their opening six league fixtures he was under pressure.

Borussia Mönchengladbach vs Barcelona, 2016 Champions League: Projected Lineups and Team News

Who starts for Barça on Wednesday's Champions League road trip?

Barcelona will look to maintain their lead at the top of Group C in the UEFA Champions League with a trip to Germany to face Borussia Mönchengladbach in what promises to be a very difficult game for the Catalan giants. Two straight clashes in a row with Manchester City in the European Cup await in October, and a victory against Gladbach is key to arrive at the City double-header with the top spot in the group assured.

Barça will have to do it without Lionel Messi, who's still recovering from a groin injury and will not return until after the international break. Samuel Umtiti is also expected back in two and a half weeks as he's nursing a knee injury, and the Frenchman will be an important absence in the Blaugrana defense.

Luis Enrique still has a very strong squad at his disposal, though, and after resting key players in the La Liga match against Sporting Gijón at the weekend, he's set to send all of his best soldiers into a war of attrition against the exciting Gladbach.

Barcelona Projected Lineup (4-4-2, r-l):

Ter Stegen; Roberto, Piqué, Mascherano, Alba; Rakitic, Busquets, Iniesta, Arda; Neymar, Suárez

Out: Messi (groin), Umtiti (knee)

******

Borussia M'Gladbach Projected Lineup (3-4-1-2, r-l):

Sommer; Elvedi, Christensen, Jantschke; Johnson, Kramer, Dahoud, Wednt; Stindl; Hazard, Raffael

Out: Domínguez (back), Doucoure (fitness), Strobl (thigh), Drmic (knee)

Barcelona legend Dani Alves just scored the luckiest, strangest, most hilarious goal of his life

This is amazing!

Dani Alves will forever be a Barcelona legend, and even though he is a full-back, he has scored quite a few goals in his glorious career.

But never quite like THIS ONE, the fourth in Juventus' 4-0 Champions League win against Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday:

(via r/Soccer)

This is a truly unbelievable play, in many aspects. The deflection of the free-kick is something quite normal, so we won't really pay attention to it, but the next few seconds are just incredible:

1 - The ball goes quite high in the air, looks like it's going over the bar, then suddenly comes back down and it's going in;

2 - The Zagreb goalkeeper, very late to notice what's happening, desperately runs back to his left side and puts himself in position to punch the ball out for a corner;

3 - He can't punch the ball backwards and the ball bounces off his hand into the box;

4 - The ball hits the ground and GOES BACKWARDS INTO THE GOAL, which does not sound like something really natural and I'm scared right now.

This is amazing. As you can see in the video, Dani and his teammates cannot stop laughing, and this will certainly bee the goal he's less proud of scoring in his career.

Still funny. Forever.

Borussia Mönchengladbach vs Barcelona, 2016 Champions League: Predict The Score

What will be the final score of Barcelona's next Champions League game?

Barcelona's season continues on Wednesday night as the Blaugrana face off against Borussia Mönchengladbach in Germany in a very important Champions League match for the Catalan giants.

We're here to predict the score of today's game, but let's first check our predictions from the last six Barça matches:

at Athletic Bilbao: 2-1 Barça (actual score: 1-0 Barça)

vs Alavés: 4-0 Barça (actual score: 2-1 Alavés)

vs Celtic: 5-0 Barça (actual score: 7-0 Barça)

vs Leganés: 3-0 Barça (actual score: 5-1 Barça)

vs Atlético Madrid: 1-1 draw (actual score: 1-1 draw)

vs Sporting Gijón: 3-0 Barça (actual score: 5-0 Barça)

We weren't able to keep the momentum from getting the result and the score right from the Atlético Madrid match, but we still accurately predicted a Barça victory in last Saturday's La Liga game. We've still gotten only one result wrong, and hopefully we keep this mark at one since we've predicted a 2-0 win for Barça in our preview.

Now it's up to you! Please post your predictions for the final score in the comments, and check later if you've gotten it right! Good luck!

Borussia Mönchengladbach vs Barcelona, 2016 UEFA Champions League: Match Preview

A preview of Barcelona's Champions League trip to Germany for a date with Borussia Mönchengladbach

FC Barcelona will be looking to extend their winning run tomorrow, when they travel to Germany to take on Borussia Monchengladbach at Borussia-Park. After an opening matchday victory over Celtic FC, the Blaugrana currently top the standings in Group C and Luis Enrique will be keen to ensure his team remain top after tomorrow’s match as well, particularly with two consecutive showdowns with Pep Guardiola and Manchester City on the horizon.

While Gladbach do not possess the same threat of a Bayern Munich or a Borussia Dortmund, they are still a very strong team who boast an incredible home record; with a 2-0 win over Ingolstadt on Saturday, Andre Schubert’s side recorded their tenth consecutive home win and it will take a monumental effort from the visitors to end that streak tomorrow. Without the services of Lionel Messi, Barça will need strong performances from all of their remaining key players – and particularly from their goalkeeper, former Monchengladbach star, Marc-André ter Stegen.

It is sure to be an emotional night for the German shot-stopper as he returns to the club that kick-started his career and entrusted him with his first starting role – a role he used to engineer his transfer to Barcelona. Ter Stegen has already spoke of his excitement about returning home, and applauding the fans that supported him throughout his tenure, but his focus remains on securing the three points for his team.

Just as he did in the successful 2014-15 UEFA Champions League campaign, ter Stegen started the group stage with a clean sheet as he saved a penalty in the previous fixture against Celtic – if anything, the German would probably prefer a quieter night tomorrow and let his colleagues steal the headlines with their performances at the other end of the pitch.

Will ter Stegen be celebrating at the end of the evening upon his return home, or will Borussia Monchengladbach spoil the party by extending their run of form?

TEAM NEWS

BARCELONA

Luis Enrique has been keeping his cards close to his chest in the build-up to this one; all 20 available first teamers are making the trip to Monchengladbach, including all three first team goalkeepers and Aleix Vidal, who has missed the past two matchday squads. In that respect, Enrique has plenty of options at his disposal and is likely to leave a few decisions right up until gametime itself.

Of course, Marc-André ter Stegen is certain to start in goal, but could we see some rotation in the defense deployed ahead of him? Sergi Roberto has been excellent at right-back this season and looked particularly superb against Sporting Gijon on Saturday, registering two assists and playing a part in another one of Barcelona’s five goals on the night; as such, it would be wise to expect him to continue tomorrow.

However, Lucas Digne and Jeremy Mathieu also started on Saturday, and neither could be considered as regular starters; does that mean that we will see Javier Mascherano and Jordi Alba back in their place tomorrow? I would not be surprised if that is the case, although there is also a possibility that Mascherano may be required to fill in at pivote ahead of Sergio Busquets, if Luis Enrique decides to rotate Busi out of the starting line-up.

Gerard Piqué is the other certainty in the backline – his composure, strength and reading of the game is absolutely crucial to this team performing at its best. I would even argue that in some respects, his strengths may even make up for the loss of Sergio Busquets – if Enrique were to decide to rotate.

That being said, there’s not really any reason not to expect Busquets to start tomorrow, and he’s likely to be joined by his usual partners, Ivan Rakitić and Andrés Iniesta, both of whom were rested on Saturday.

In attack, Luis Suarez and Neymar will continue to lead the frontline, the only question is who will join them up top; Rafinha Alcântara performed admirably once again on Saturday, notching his second goal of the season and would love another chance to start again tomorrow. Likewise, Arda Turan scored again in the second half and that his fourth goal of the season if you count the brace he grabbed in the Spanish Super Cup.

Paco Alcacer also made a bright cameo appearance off the bench and perhaps this would be a good opportunity for him to start and build his confidence? Enrique has a plethora of options – and all of them look good; but my money is on Rafinha getting the nod.

BORUSSIA MONCHENGLADBACH

Andre Schubert enters the match with one major injury concern; their star striker and top-scorer Raffael is sidelined with a muscle injury and it’s unlikely that he will be back in time for tomorrow’s match. His replacement, Lars Stindl, scored the opening goal in the weekend win over Ingolstadt, but Raffael’s absence is a big one that could very well influence the way the game is played tomorrow.

Of course, Monchengladbach still possess world-class talent in their line-up; Eden Hazard’s brother, Thorgan Hazard, has been superb thus far this season and Christoph Kramer is a World Cup winning midfielder, although Schubert must have concerns over a defense that is missing arguably it’s best player, Alvaro Dominguez.

FORM GUIDE

Barcelona: WLWWDW

Borussia Monchengladbach: WLLWDW

LAST MEETING

This will be the first time ever - EVER! - that these two teams face each other.

LIKELY LINE-UPS

Barcelona (4-3-3): ter Stegen; Roberto, Piqué, Mascherano, Alba; Busquets, Rakitić, Iniesta; Rafinha, Suarez, Neymar

Borussia (3-4-1-2): Sommer; Christensen, Elvedi, Jantschke; Traore, Kramer, Dahoud, Wendt; Hazard; Hahn, Stindl

MATCH PREDICTION

I think we’ll edge this one; 2-0 is my prediction.

Sergi Roberto Could Be Backed Up by B Teamers If Aleix Vidal Doesn't Shape Up

Luis Enrique has two players who could play right-back if Aleix Vidal doesn't start performing better.

The picture at right-back couldn't be clearer. Sergi Roberto owns the starting job and is playing with absolute top class. Aleix Vidal is struggling to break into the matchday squad.

So what happens if Vidal doesn't shape up? Well, the winter transfer window looms, but there is a more immediate option, or rather two: Nili and Sergi Palencia, two B teamers who are performing well.

Nili, whose real name is Francisco Perdomo, played for Las Palmas last year, where he made his La Liga debut. Meanwhile, Palencia is a La Masia product. Both can play multiple positions, but both are by their nature right-sided fullbacks.

Palencia has taken over the right-back spot at Barcelona B, where he is captain and one of Gerard López's go-to guys. Nili meanwhile has had to play as a forward to be accommodated into the team since Palencia is so automatic on the team sheet.

This suggests Palencia is really the one to look out for, but you never know. Both were registered for the Champions League, and while they are not going to feature against Borussia Mönchengladbach, we may see them get called up to train with the first team if Vidal doesn't change things and the youngsters keep performing.

Borussia Mönchengladbach vs Barcelona, 2016 UEFA Champions League: Key Battles, What to look for

A few talking points ahead of Barça's visit to Germany for a big Champions League game

After the brilliance of the win against Sporting Gijón in Asturias over the weekend, Luis Enrique takes his men in Blaugrana to Germany for a game against the hugely impressive Borussia Mönchengladbach. After much success under Lucien Favre, Andre Schubert has taken the baton from his predecessor and ran with it. It will be a particularly poignant occasion for Marc-André ter Stegen - returning to "the club of my (his) heart".

Gladbach will pose a much bigger and more incisive threat than Celtic were in Matchday 1. They have a great record of producing upsets in big games - just ask Bayern Munich.

Missing players - Lionel Messi & Samuel Umtiti

Any team in the world would feel the absence of the best player of his generation and one of the best in the history of the beautiful game. That said, Neymar and Luis Suarez aren't a bad duo to step up and take Messi's mantle and drive the team to another victory. In spite of how ludicrous it might sound at first reading, the loss of Samuel Umtiti could be a bigger blow to the side for this game. With the pace and power of Gladbach, Umtiti would have been a great option in defence alongside Gerard Piqué. The German side will look to launch incisive counter-attacks with the pace they have in the likes of André Hahn and Ibrahima Traoré. Thorgan Hazard, Lars Stindl and Raffael, a brilliant forward, bring guile to their side. Hazard has been in great form while Stindl has a penchant for the spectacular from outside the box. Raffael has struggled with a knock and could be ruled out of this game. While Barça should be able to cover for the absence of Messi, Umtiti's loss could be sorely felt considering the characteristics of Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Inexperience of Borussia Mönchengladbach?

As good as Gladbach have been, having a considerable number of young players in a line-up could have its difficulties and drawbacks. Nico Elvedi and Chelsea loanee Andreas Christensen have impressed viewers with their play since breaking into the Gladbach first team. Mahmoud Dahoud is an incredible talent who has impressed in spades since making his Bundesliga bow. The key to what Gladbach have in bedding in all these young players is their coach, Andre Schubert, who has implemented an effective tactical system which relies on energy and discipline. Having young players, in Gladbach's case, has been a positive - their zealous enthusiasm and fearlessness bringing a dynamic sense of ambition to their play. This intensity makes Gladbach a great team to watch and a dangerous opponent for Barça.

FC Barcelona announce squad for UEFA Champions League match against Borussia Mönchengladbach

All healthy Barça players will travel to Germany for a key Champions League match

Barcelona manager Luis Enrique has announced a 20-man squad list for the trip to Germany for a big UEFA Champions League match against Borussia Mönchengladbach:

Goalkeepers: 1. Marc-André ter Stegen, 13. Jasper Cillessen, 25. Jordi Masip

Defenders: 3. Gerard Piqué, 14. Javier Mascherano, 18. Jordi Alba, 19. Lucas Digne, 20. Sergi Roberto, 22. Aleix Vidal, 24. Jérémy Mathieu

Midfielders: 4. Ivan Rakitic, 5. Sergio Busquets, 6. Denis Suarez, 7. Arda Turan, 8. Andrés Iniesta, 12. Rafinha Alcântara, 21. André Gomes

Forwards: 9. Luis Suárez, 11. Neymar Jr., 17. Paco Alcácer

Luis Enrique usually takes the entire squad with him for the away games in the Champions League, and only the injured players stay in Barcelona. This is the case for the Gladbach match, which means Aleix Vidal is back in the squad after four games out. He'll probably be cut from the bench since Barça can only have 18 players in uniform, but it's good that Vidal is at least traveling with the team.

Lionel Messi and Sammy Umtiti will stay home to continue treatment on their injuries, but the rest of the squad is healthy and available for selection.

Projected starting lineup (4-4-2, r-l):

Ter Stegen; Roberto, Piqué, Mascherano, Alba; Rakitic, Busquets, Iniesta, Arda; Suárez, Neymar

UEFA assign referee for Champions League match between Barcelona and Borussia Mönchengladbach

One of the top referees in Europe takes care of a big game for Barça

We have an official whistle blower for the next Barcelona match in Europe.

The European Federation announced that Damir Skomina from Slovenia has been appointed as the match official for the UEFA Champions League clash between Borussia Mönchengladbach and FC Barcelona on Wednesday night, at Borussia-Park in Germany. This will be Skomina's second Champions League assignment this season (Celtic 5-2 Hapoel Beer Sheva).

The 40-year-old has become one of the top referees in Europe over the last few years. Skomina has been assigned for some of the biggest European matches for club and country competitions, including four games in EURO 2016, one of those being the quarterfinal between Wales and Belgium. He was also the referee in England's humiliating loss to Iceland in the same tournament.

In the Champions League, Skomina took care of the semifinal second leg between Real Madrid and Manchester City at Santiago Bernabéu last April, one of six European Cup games he officiated in the 2015/16 season. He also was the referee in a group stage match involving Barça's opponent, Gladbach, who beat Sevilla in a game overseen by Skomina.

The Slovenian has officiated a Barça match before, and it is one the Catalan giants don't want to remember: it was the second leg of the 2013 semifinal, and the Blaugranes were demolished by Bayern Munich, who won 3-0 at Camp Nou and clinched a place in the Final that season.

So Skomina refereed a Gladbach win last season, and his only Barça game was a loss to a German team. Yeah, we're in trouble.

Borussia Mönchengladbach vs Barcelona, 2016 UEFA Champions League: Team News, Lineups, Live Stream, All Updates

Barcelona face Borussia Mönchengladbach in a big Champions League match on Wednesday night in Germany. Stay with us for full coverage!

Borussia Mönchengladbach are getting ready to entertain Barcelona next Wednesday in a big Champions League game, and they are sad about the world's best player not visiting Borussia Park.

Lionel Messi sustained a groin injury in the La Liga match against Atlético Madrid, and the Argentine forward was ruled out for three weeks, meaning he will not return to action until after the international break. Because of that, Leo will not play against Gladbach, and the German club is not really happy about it.

The Gladbach Twitter is one of the best follows you can have (seriously), and their Messi tweet was very good:

Seriously, they think it's a shame that Messi won't face them. Most teams would be celebrating, but Gladbach think it's a shame. That's nice.

The best part about this, though, came from Messi himself, who took to Facebook to thanks the fans for their messages, and also thanked Gladbach for their gesture:

¡Muchas gracias al Borussia Mönchengladbach por el mensaje de ánimo! Un gran detalle de su parte. Y por supuesto también...

This is so cool! Football needs more of this.

Barcelona Star Gerard Piqué Drops MLS Hint

It's far in the future, but the defender has admitted he is interested in eventually playing in the United States.

Speaking at a sponsor event, Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué was given the choice between the Chinese league or the MLS, the United States' top division.

"They are both growing, though with different models. I read that the MLS is the seventh best-attended league in the world, after the five big ones and a sixth one. The fans are hooked on soccer more and more in the United States. I don't think I'd go to China, but we'll see about the United States."

Fact check: Piqué is right, the MLS is the seventh-highest attended soccer league in the world, behind the "big five" (Bundesliga, Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, and Ligue 1). Want to guess the "sixth one?" That's right, it's the Football League Championship, the second division of British football.

It's followed by the Campeonato Brasileiro, the Eredivisie, the 2. Bundesliga, the Chinese Super League, and Liga MX.

He went on to say: "I always said that I would like to retire at Barça, but it would be an attractive option in a few years, as long as I still crave playing soccer."

Borussia Mönchengladbach vs Barcelona, 2016 UEFA Champions League: List of injuries, suspensions

Plenty of potential absences ahead of a key European match on Wednesday

The Borussia-Park will be full on Wednesday night for a big UEFA Champions League encounter between Borussia Mönchengladbach and Barcelona, but some important players for both teams will not be available to play in Germany.

The biggest absence is obviously Lionel Messi, who will not return to action until after the international break with a groin injury. The Blaugrana superstar has injured the adductor muscle in both legs, which has raised questions about the amount of minutes the Argentine has played this season. The problem isn't serious, but Leo was advised to rest for three weeks and be fully fit for the remainder of the season.

Another Barça player not traveling to Germany is Samuel Umtiti, who has a strained ligament in his knee and is also expected to return after the international break. The Frenchman has become a huge part of Barça's defense in a short period of time, but was unlucky to hurt his knee in training and suffer the first injury of his young career.

As for Gladbach, up to seven players are either ruled out or doubtful to face the Catalan giants because of physical problems. That includes front man Raffael, perhaps Borussia's best player. The Brazilian is a very good goalscorer and playmaker, and his talents will be certainly missed if he's unable to recover from a groin problem. He can still be fit in time, but it'll be tough to see him for 90 minutes on Wednesday.

This is the full list of Gladbach and Barça players and their injury status for the game:

Player (Team), Status

Joel Mero (Gladbach), Doubtful (Leg)

Mamadou Doucoure (Gladbach), Doubtful (Hamstring)

Marvin Schulz (Gladbach), Doubtful (Groin)

Raffael (Gladbach), Doubtful (Groin)

Tobias Strobl (Gladbach), Doubtful (Hamstring)

Alvaro Domínguez (Gladbach), Out (Back)

Josip Drmic (Gladbach), Out (Knee)

Lionel Messi (Barcelona), Out (Groin)

Sameul Umtiti (Barcelona), Out (Knee)

How should Barcelona line up in the UEFA Champions League match against Borussia Mönchengladbach?

Let's choose the starters!

After a shaky start to the La Liga season, Barcelona are firmly established in the title race, having cut Real Madrid's lead to just one point and looking strong again in domestic competiton.

Now the Blaugrana hope to maintain their continetal momentum and stay at the top of Group C in the UEFA Champions League. The group stage opener was spectacular, with a 7-0 rout of Celtic and the best performance of the season so far for Luis Enrique's side. But the next three games are the toughest tests for the Catalans, including two straight matches against Pep Guardiola's Manchester City.

Before that glorious clash, though, a trip to Germany awaits, and facing Borussia Mönchengladbach on the road will not be easy. Gladbach have won the last 11 games at home in all competitions, have an exceptional fan base who create a hostile environment at the Borussia-Park, and the team is young, hungry, talented and very well coached by Andre Schubert.

Luis Enrique will certainly look to field the strongest possible lineup, which is why he rotated against Sporting Gijón on the weekend. Players like Mascherano, Alba, Rakitic and Iniesta will return to the side, but would they come back on your favorite lineup? Please fill out the attached form below and choose your starting eleven for Wednesday's game. You can also use the comment section below to share your selections.

Choose wisely, it's a big game.
