UEFA appoint referee for Champions League clash between Barcelona and Bayer Leverkusen

We have news on the whistle blower for Barcelona's next game.

The UEFA Referees Committee has appointed 44-year-old Martin Atkinson to take charge of the UEFA Champions League match between the Blaugrana and Bayer Leverkusen, on Tuesday night at Camp Nou. The Englishman is one of the Premier League's top referees, and he is entering his tenth season as a FIFA-certified judge.

Refereeing Barça matches at Camp Nou in the Champions League is nothing new for Atkinson. In fact, this will be his third time in charge of a game in the Catalan capital, and the defending champions have a good record in the previous two matches under his supervision: the first was a group stage clash against AC Milan in 2011, an exciting game that ended with a 2-2 draw in the last season under Pep Guardiola.

Atkinson returned to the Camp Nou last season to referee the group stage game between the Catalan giants and Paris Saint-Germain, and the Blaugranes won in exciting fashion, with a 3-1 victory that was the first real glimpse of what would become a Treble-winning, world-beating squad.

Maybe Mr. Atkinson will bring some luck to Barça on Tuesday. We need it!
