LET'S FOOTBALL!
The strike is over. Let's football.
The National Court of Spain has announced on Thursday that it had ruled in favor of the Spanish League (LFP), who had requested that the strike called by the Players' Union (AFE) should be suspended. With the favorable decision towards the LFP, the last two rounds and twenty matches of La Liga and the Copa Del Rey Final between Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao will be contested as planned.
The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), who had backed the Union's plans for a strike, also confirmed that the matches will indeed happen on Sunday, May 17th, and Saturday, May 23rd, as well as the Spanish Cup Final to be contested at Camp Nou on Saturday, May 30th.
Judge Ricardo Bodas Martin, who made the ruling, stated that he had decided to suspend the strike because "it would provoke a great organizational disorder that would be difficult to resolve", meaning that re-scheduling the games for the offseason would be a complete nightmare.
However, Judge Bodas Martin also stated that the suspension is only "provisional" and "could be modified" in the future. The court will continue to study the case to provide a complete and definitive ruling. But, that study and decision will take time, so the next two weeks of Spanish Football are no longer in danger.
That's great news for Barcelona, who now has a great chance to win all three titles it competes for this season. On Sunday, the Blaugrana will travel to the Spanish Capital and face Atlético Madrid at Vicente Calderón, while Real Madrid travels to Catalonia for an encounter with Espanyol. With a victory, or a Real loss, Barça will win the Spanish League trophy a round earlier. If the results are negative for the Catalans and the title decider gets pushed to next Saturday, Barça will have a much easier task against Deportivo La Coruña.
Anyway, the treble is alive and there for the taking.
