La Liga: FC Barcelona 2-0 Real Sociedad: Player Ratings

A detailed, player-by-player breakdown of Barcelona's immensely important win against Real Sociedad.

Claudio Bravo

Minutes played: 90
Touches: 37
Passes: 21
Pass Accuracy: 67%
Shots Faced: 1
Saves Made: 1
Clearances: 2

Bostjan says: 7.5

For the 22nd time this season Bravo prevented the opponents from scoring a single goal. His defense helped that cause quite a bit though as the Chilean only had to make a solitary save, a fairly straightforward one in added time, but Bravo had to be alert throughout. On several occasions Real Sociedad tried to threaten through the air, but again Bravo dominated the air space, claiming four crosses sent into the area. He also didn’t shy away from leaving his area to clear the danger.

Dani Alves
7.9
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 86
Passes: 63
Pass Accuracy: 83%
Key Passes: 3
Turnovers: 5
Tackles: 3
Shots/Shots on Target: 1/0
Clearances: 3
Fouls: 1
Interceptions: 2

Bostjan says: 7.5

Alves started the match at a very high level, creating a couple scoring chances in the opening 10 minutes of the game with excellent crosses that on a different day would’ve resulted in at least one assist. The Brazilian spent most of the game in attack, but didn’t forget about his defensive responsibilities either. Alves started to fade as the game went on, pulling back a bit to help his team keep Real Sociedad off the scoreboard.

Gerard Pique
7.7
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 83
Passes: 72
Pass Accuracy: 92%
Tackles: 2
Interceptions: 2
Clearances: 0
Aerial Duels Won: 1

Bostjan says: 7.5

A very good showing from Pique who continues with his impressive comeback season. Positionally he was strong throughout the game, even if he did stray on a few occasions, and was crucial in completely shutting down the always dangerous Carlos Vela. Pique had some problems with the speed Real Sociedad players bring to the table, but he always seemed to recover and come out victorious. Pique also tried to be a catalyst on offense, but was unable to produce the end product.

Marc Bartra
6.9
Minutes played: 60
Touches: 56
Passes: 50
Pass Accuracy: 86%
Tackles: 2
Interceptions: 2
Clearances: 1
Aerial Duels Won: 3
Shots/Shots on Target: 1/1

Bostjan says: 7.5

After three games on the bench Bartra returned to the starting lineup. The youngster had another very solid game, making numerous important plays, but he made also made a terrible mistake midway through the first half that very nearly resulted in a very good scoring chance for Real Sociedad. Bartra also came very close to scoring his second goal of the season, but Gerónimo Rulli did extremely well to prevent the ball from crossing the line.

Adriano Correia
6.6
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 66
Passes: 48
Pass Accuracy: 88%
Shots/Shots on Target: 0/0
Tackles: 3
Interceptions: 4
Clearances: 5
Key Passes: 0
Turnovers: 1

Bostjan says: 6.5

Another very underwhelming performance from Adriano who struggled to help Barcelona in attack, but was able to contribute defensively, making more interceptions and clearances than any Barcelona player on the pitch. His attacking play left much to be desired as he lacked conviction. On some plays the Brazilian was able to stretch the play, but overall there was a large disparity between Barcelona’s right side of attack and the left.

Javier Mascherano
7.6
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 66
Passes: 54
Pass Accuracy: 94%
Shots/Shots on Target: 0/0
Tackles: 4
Interceptions: 4
Clearances: 1
Turnovers: 0
Aerial Duels Won: 0
Key Passes: 0
Fouls Won: 1

Sam says: 7.5

As per usual, it was a very strong defensive performance from Mascherano. his four tackles and four interceptions prevented any Real Sociedad counterattacks and ensured Barça kept a clean sheet. He also had a strong passing game by completing 54 passes, a total that only Dani Alves and Gerard Piqué bettered.

Xavi
7.6
Minutes played: 73
Touches: 68
Passes: 53
Pass Accuracy: 89%
Shots/Shots on Target: 0/0
Turnovers: 0
Key Passes: 2
Successful Dribbles: 2
Tackles: 0

Sam says: 7.0

Xavi was an attacking presence throughout by making smart runs in and around the edge of the area and although he didn’t manage an actual shot himself, he did free up space for others. Also his crossing abilities helped to provide an alternative method of attack for Barcelona, in particular his floated corner which was just headed wide by Marc Bartra. His passing success rate was slightly lower than usual but it was still a well rounded performance.

Rafinha 7.2
Minutes played: 81
Touches: 51
Passes: 43
Pass Accuracy: 95%
Shots/Shots on Target: 1/0
Fouls Won: 4
Turnovers: 2
Successful Dribbles: 0
Key Passes: 0
Tackles: 1

Sam says: 6.5

A slightly quiet game for Rafinha in which the majority of it seemed to pass him by. However he did produce a surging run which created danger and put in a decent defensive performance. He was also the most accurate passer on the pitch with a success rate of 95.4%. Aside from that he was also won a fair share of fouls which could be converted into chances.

Luis Suarez
6.7
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 34
Passes: 26
Pass Accuracy: 77%
Shots/Shots on Target: 1/0
Turnovers: 2
Successful Dribbles: 1
Key Passes: 2
Fouls Won: 2
Tackles: 0

Ahmed says: 7.0

Had a chance to score early in the first-half but headed wide of the post from a Dani Alves cross. Again, Suarez snatched at a chance later in the half after being set up by Messi.  The Uruguayan's movement wasn't as effective as it usually is, but everyone will be pleased that he didn't get the yellow card that would have ruled him out for the upcoming Atletico Madrid clash.

Lionel Messi
8.4
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 56
Passes: 32
Pass Accuracy: 63%
Shots/Shots on Target: 4/2
Fouls Won: 1
Successful Dribbles: 3
Key Passes: 1
Turnovers: 9
Tackles: 1

Ahmed says: 8.0

Set up Neymar for the opening goal, played a part in Pedro's goal and caused Real Sociedad no end of problems throughout. After his showing against Bayern, many will argue that didn't have much influence on this game. Yet but for his contributions, Barcelona most probably wouldn't have beaten Real Sociedad.

Neymar
8.4
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 67
Passes: 45
Pass Accuracy: 73%
Shots/Shots on Target: 4/3
Tackles: 4
Key Passes: 3
Interceptions: 3
Turnovers: 8

Ahmed says: 8.5

Scored in his sixth consecutive game in what was his 50th goal for the club largely due to his innate ability to appear in the right place at the right time. Neymar was dangerous throughout. He missed a good chance early in the first-half and his decision-making was at times mixed, yet he came up with the goods when it mattered. The Brazilian also did his fair share of defensive work. His link-up play with Messi did not go unnoticed. It's yet another reason for Barcelona's evident improvement this season.

Sergio Busquets
7.2
Minutes played: 30
Touches: 27
Passes: 25
Pass Accuracy: 88%
Turnovers: 1

Arron says: 7.5

His introduction for Marc Bartra raised a few eyebrows, but it was entirely necessary for Barcelona to close out the victory. With Mascherano in midfield we were less fluid, and inviting a little more pressure on ourselves as a result. With Busquets on though, Barcelona pushed a little further forward and were rewarded accordingly.

Andres Iniesta
7.2
Minutes played: 17
Touches: 18
Passes: 16
Pass Accuracy: 94%
Tackles: 1

Arron says: 7.0

Iniesta entered the match relatively late, presumably to hand Xavi the ovation that his contributions deserved and picked up exactly where our captain left off. His passing was crisp, accurate and safe, helping us close out the final stages of what could have been a tough fixture.

Pedro
8.5
Minutes played: 5
Touches: 9
Passes: 4
Pass Accuracy: 100%
Shots/Shots on Target: 1/1

Arron says: 8.5

Pedro's lengthy drought of three months and a day without a goal was brought to a satisfying end on Saturday evening in quite sensational fashion; who would have though that Pedrito is still capable of such magic? His spectacular chilena did more than bring the crowd to their feet though; it also secured the three points in one of our most important victories of the season. If this is the last goal he scores in a Blaugrana jersey, it will be a fitting finale.

The Team 8.0
Passes: 589
Pass Accuracy: 88%
Shots/Shots on Target: 15/8
Tackles: 22
Aerial Battles Won: 37%
Fouls Won/Committed: 13/9

Arron says: 8.5

I must confess, I wasn't particularly impressed or engaged by the performance, irrespective of the final result and its potential implications. I thought we looked a little laboured at times, although that much is understandable given the previous match against Bayern Munich. All that matters ultimately is the three points -- and we picked them up. That's a lot better than we were doing in January anyway.

Luis Enrique
8.0

Arron says: 9.0

Five changes to rest some key names, a few gutsy substitutions and another three points. Luis Enrique can do no wrong!

MOTM - Neymar
40%

Arron says: Neymar

The man who got the opener also won the community man of the match, earning himself 40% of the vote to finish ahead of Lionel Messi (33%) and Claudio Bravo (7%).
