A detailed, player-by-player breakdown of Barcelona's Champions League victory over PSG.
Marc-Andre ter Stegen | 7.5 |
Minutes played: 90 Touches: 44 Passes: 17 Pass Accuracy: 71 % Shots Faced: 4 Saves Made: 3 Clearances: 1 Bostjan says: 7.5 Like his team-mate, Claudio Bravo in La Liga, ter Stegen was also unable to hold on to the clean sheet, but he too could only curse the defense in front of him for that, as he could do nothing to stop Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s shot. Otherwise the young German looked comfortable in net, doing a good job collecting a handful of loose balls in the area. Though probably for the first time in his short Barcelona career his passing wasn’t as accurate as we’ve become used to seeing. |
Pedro | 6.9 |
Minutes played: 67 Touches: 44 Passes: 33 Pass Accuracy: 85 % Key Passes: 0 Shots/Shots on Target: 0/0 Tackles: 1 Turnovers: 4 Clearances: 0 Fouls: 3 Interceptions: 1 Bostjan says: 6.5 People have been asking for Pedro to start at right back for some time now and against PSG their wish came true. But Pedro spent hardly any time in the backline, playing more as a right midfielder/winger. Regardless how you spin it, though, he had a very quiet game. Offensively he had little impact, though he had a great chance to pick up an assist early in the second half, but his pass to Neymar was not accurate enough. Defensively has wasn’t tested much. |
Gerard Pique | 7.0 |
Minutes played: 90 Touches: 93 Passes: 79 Pass Accuracy: 96 % Tackles: 1 Interceptions: 2 Clearances: 10 Fouls: 0 Bostjan says: 7.0 Pique bounced back nicely from his below-par performance against Espanyol, but he could’ve been credited with an assist on Ibrahimovic’s goal after his clearance/tackle ended up at the feet of the Swede. He had another gaffe early in the second half when Lucas Moura easily jumped past him to set up a golden chance for PSG. But putting those two plays aside Pique made several important defensive plays that helped Barcelona beat PSG. |
Marc Bartra | 8.7 |
Minutes played: 90 Touches: 89 Passes: 74 Pass Accuracy: 89% Tackles: 3 Interceptions: 3 Clearances: 3 Aerial Duels Won: 4 Fouls: 0 Bostjan says: 9.0 Just about on every team in the world Bartra would be the starting center-back, but somehow he’s not in Barcelona, despite his terrific form on the pitch. He continued his string of great games against PSG, with a performance reminiscent of Carles Puyol in his very best days. The highlight of his game was a brilliant goal-line block to bail out two of his defensive partners. Later in the game he showed his versatility by moving to the right-back position, where he was able to showcase his ball-playing skills more often. |
Jeremy Mathieu | 6.3 |
Minutes played: 90 Touches: 86 Passes: 77 Pass Accuracy: 88 % Shots/Shots on Target: 1/0 Tackles: 3 Interceptions: 1 Clearances: 0 Fouls : 0 Aerial Duels Won: 1 Bostjan says: 6.0 Mathieu might have started his Barcelona career on fire, but lately he’s been struggling with form. He played this game on the left side of the defensive line, putting him one-on-one with Lucas, and the Brazilian manhandled him all game long, including on the aforementioned play early in the second half that resulted in Bartra’s goal-saving block. His game picked up later in the match when he wasn’t left in sole coverage of Lucas anymore. |
Javier Mascherano | 7.9 |
Minutes played: 90 Touches: 77 Passes: 73 Pass Accuracy: 93 % Tackles: 1 Interceptions: 2 Shots/Shots on Target: 0/0 Clearances: 1 Aerial Duels Won: 2 Turnovers: 0 Key passes: 0 Sam says: 7.0 A good performance for Mascherano with his delicate chip though ball being the catalyst to Barça’s opening goal. His dink over the defence found Luis Suárez who then found Messi for Barcelona’s equaliser. However, with both Busquets and Mascherano playing the Argentine can sometimes seem a little lost positionally and his defensive work suffers for it. |
Sergio Busquets | 6.7 |
Minutes played: 90 Touches: 83 Passes: 68 Pass Accuracy: 9 6% Shots/Shots on Target: 1/0 Turnovers: 1 Key Passes: 0 Interceptions : 4 Tackles: 6 Sam says: 7.5 A similar game for Busquets as the one at the weekend. He started slowly, largely being at fault for PSG’s goal. Despite not giving the ball away, it was his duty to mark Ibrahimovic and an unmarked Zlatan in the box always ends in a goal. But he turned it around and began helping Barça dictate the play, especially when they were holding on the lead. |
Andres Iniesta | 6.5 |
Minutes played: 72 Touches: 83 Passes: 53 Pass Accuracy: 87 % Shots/Shots on Target: 0 /0 Fouls Won: 0 Tackles: 4 Turnovers: 2 Key Passes: 2 Successful Dribbles : 1 Sam says: 7.0 Playing as the sole attacking midfielder, Iniesta put in a good performance. His ball control helped him weave through the PSG midfield and setup chances for Barcelona. While his passing accuracy meant PSG were denied the opportunity to counter attack frequently and it was Iniesta’s pass that setup Neymar’s brilliant goal. A good night for the man wearing the captain’s armband. |
Luis Suarez | 7.8 |
Minutes played: 90 Touches: 60 Passes: 44 Pass Accuracy: 84 % Shots/Shots on Target: 3/2 Turnovers: 6 Successful Dribbles: 0 Key Passes: 1 Fouls Won: 2 Tackles: 1 Ahmed says: 8.5 Excellent pressing from the front 3 throughout the match and Suarez is no exception. It was his brilliant run and cut-back which created the first goal for Messi. He then scored his first goal at the Camp Nou with the third from close-range following a Neymar shot and Sirigu save. He was fouled quite a few times and it was a really positive performance overall from the Uruguayan. |
Lionel Messi | 8.6 |
Minutes played: 90 Touches: 77 Passes: 59 Pass Accuracy: 92 % Shots/Shots on Target: 3/1 Fouls Won: 0 Successful Dribbles: 6 Key Passes: 0 Turnovers: 2 Tackles: 0 Ahmed says: 8.5 Fantastic anticipation for the first goal in sprinting to the far post and levelling the score. Messi was a danger and causing havoc throughout. He set up Pedro with a fairly good chance from which he should really have done better. He could have scored the third goal but selflessly left it for Suarez. Neymar would have been through on goal from a superb Messi long-pass but Rakitic inadvertently intercepted it. In a deeper number 10 position, Messi made the Thiago Silva and David Luiz centre-back pairing look fairly poor. |
Neymar | 8.5 |
Minutes played: 90 Touches: 60 Passes: 52 Pass Accuracy: 84 % Shots/Shots on Target: 3 /2 Tackles: 1 Key Passes: 1 Successful Dribbles: 2 Turnovers: 3 Ahmed says: 8.5 Wasn’t moving freely for large parts of the first-half, even limping at times. Neymar went past van der Wiel time and time again. Neymar’s goal was both wonderful and spectacular. He burst away from the PSG defence and hit an absolutely unstoppable, dipping and swerving shot from distance that flew right past Sirigu and into the bottom corner. Linked up well with his fellow forwards and pressed well. Neymar was fouled a few times and even did his fair share of defending, especially in the second-half. He could probably have provided more protection for Mathieu in the first-half. It was his strong low shot which led to the third goal. |
Ivan Rakitić | 6.8 |
Minutes played: 23 Touches: 19 Passes: 17 Pass Accuracy: 94 % Turnovers : 1 Fouls : 1 Inder says: 7.0 Came in around the 62 minute mark for Pedro, which in turn changed Barca's formation to the standard 4-3-3, Rakitic didn't really do more than help close the game out. He kept the ball moving and brought on some fresh legs to assure timely help in the defensive parts of the game. |
Xavi | 7.4 |
Minutes played: 18 Touches: 16 Passes: 16 Pass Accuracy: 94 % Key Passes : 1 Inder says: 8.0 It's that feeling of relief every cule gets when you see Xavi entering the game, when Barca are winning 3-1. Xavi keeps the ball better than anyone(when healthy). He was involved in Barca's third goal when he laid the ball neatly, for Neymar who's saved shot led to Suarez scoring (cannot forget how a boost to the Uruguayan's confidence is great for Barca). Kept things ticking over for the rest of the game and did well to prove to any doubters that Xavi still has a role to play in this Barca which can turn out to be significant when keeping trophies in mind. |
Adriano Correia | 6.2 |
Minutes played: 0 Touches: 1 Passes: 0 Pass Accuracy: 0 % Fouls Won : 1 Inder says: N/A Came on for the last 20 seconds. |
The Team | 8.0 |
Passes: 693 Pass Accuracy: 90 % Shots/Shots on Target: 11 /5 Tackles: 21 Aerial Battles Won: 59 % Fouls Won/Committed: 12/12 Inder says: 9.0 It was a match of two halves, that's for sure. The team was slow to start once again and struggled with the new 3-2-3-2 formation that Lucho decided on. This is something that can only improve when players are drilled in training to the point that movements on the pitch, become like muscle memory. The second half saw a motivated Barca looking to dominate an opponent while being assured across the pitch. And yet Barca scored the first two goals in the 1st half, which reminds us that moments of individual brilliance played a part. In the end, I think it was a performance worthy of a team with great potential. Barca were efficient when it mattered, the defense had a few slips but kept things simple and built confidence over the game. |
Luis Enrique | 7.5 |
Inder says: 8.0 Now this is tough to rate. I can't decide if his tactics worked or not. On the one hand moments of individual brilliance won us the game and on the other, isn't that why a team has great players? So that they perform when it matters? That said, kudos to Lucho for having the cojones to experiment in an another big game. The general idea was good and now it's a matter of him being smart enough to realise that a little less rotation could be a good thing to build on chemistry on the pitch. |
MOTM - Marc Bartra | 53% |
Bostjan says: Messi Considering the strong offensive performance by the Barcelona front trio it might come as a bit of a surprise that it was Bartra who ran away with the award, but that just showed how good of a game the young center back had. Messi (17%) and Neymar (11%) finished the vote in a distant second and third place, respectively. |
