Ter Stegen had become the Germans’ #1

In Germany the rumor is that Manuel Neuer will return as the #1 keeper, ahead of Marc-André ter Stegen.

Neuer did not impress in Germany’s disappointing FIFA World Cup 2022 campaign. After that, he suffered a long-term injury.

Ter Stegen was given a chance to be the #1 for his country in a series of UEFA Nations League and friendly games. There were some who thought that he might finally make the position his for good, given Neuer’s advanced age.

“He is definitely number one at the moment, but that is not something I am thinking about right now,” Neuer said about Ter Stegen recently.

However, Ter Stegen’s performances, while not bad, did not fully convince the managers and fans that they should stick with him no matter what. He also dealt with an injury, and though not as serious as Neuer’s, it did mean he missed the last few Germany matches. Kevin Trapp started instead.

Now, Neuer is back playing for Bayern Munich and so far, he has received praise for his presence and trademark passing ability.

It’s clear Ter Stegen does not want to give up his starting position which has for the most part eluded him at international level. But if reports are correct, Germany are looking to make Neuer the starter soon and may stick with him in the upcoming UEFA Euro 2024.
