Silence from the club so far
Another day, another crisis for Joan Laporta to deal with at Barcelona. Only he isn’t dealing with this one.
For a president that holds great stock in the ‘mes que un club’ tag line, he’s doing a great job of remaining tight-lipped on the whole affair.
Antoine Griezmann and Ousmane Dembele’s mocking of Asian employees back in 2019, in a video that has only recently surfaced, has been rightly condemned, and in any other line of work you wouldn’t be surprised to find it being a sackable offence.
Of course, Barca daren’t do that for fear of losing out on a pretty penny which they need to help balance the books.
Cash is King, even if that could come at the expense of losing their main club sponsor.
Rakuten chief, Hiroshi Mikitani, is furious with the club as much as he is with the players, and Laporta’s insouciance, frankly, speaks volumes.
“We will formally protest to the club and get to know their point of view in this regard.”

What possible defence does either player have in this instance? None whatsoever.
If racism is to be eradicated from the game, then it has to start from those within the game, and Dembele and Griezmann’s pathetic apologies just don’t cut it.
For any number of reasons, Barca must take action. Not a token gesture either. This is one disciplinary matter that cannot and should not be swept under the carpet.
It’s not the only problem Laporta has to deal with either.
Players who don’t want to leave - why would they when their bank balance is swelling quite nicely thanks to Señor J.M. Bartomeu?!
Players that have come in and can’t be registered because of the financial mess that the former administration have left behind.
Salary reductions that players aren’t agreeing to - see above....
And the need to rapidly rid the club of its deadwood in order for Lionel Messi to be granted his final contract at the club.
Not forgetting that Matheus wants to sue the club because he considers his release to be unfair.
What an absolute joke of a football club Barca have become. Every time you think it can’t get any worse, there’s another slap in the face incoming.
Granted, Laporta isn’t to blame for much of it and he has been doing his best to steady the ship.
However, all of the issues mentioned above need resolving immediately. Beginning with the sanctions of the French World Cup winners.
Do you honestly want players like that playing for your club?
