Of course, it depends on certain other things happening first
FC Barcelona are hopeful it can announce the renewal of Lionel Messi’s contract as early as next week. However, that depends on whether they can convince other high earning players to take a wage cut and/or whether they can find buyers for certain players the club does not want anymore.
The player has reportedly agreed to join for a wage around half what he earned last season in order to remain with the club that developed him. However, he has not been able to put pen to paper as Barcelona must clear salaries in order to stay under the salary cap.
If all goes according to plan, the club hopes to announce him before the German leg of their preseason tour.
Messi will be asked to come to begin training at the same time as the players who participated in Copa América (Sergio Agüero, Emerson Royal, and Ronald Araujo), August 3rd.
Should Messi’s renewal not be announced next week, there is no cause for panic. Barcelona have given themselves until August 31st to figure out the situation.
Messi famously asked to leave last summer, citing the lack of a competitive sporting project. He was compelled to stay in a rebuilding season in which Barcelona lifted the Copa del Rey but were swatted aside in the UEFA Champions League and finished third in La Liga. New club president Joan Laporta has promised Messi that he will help rebuild the team after the disastrous reign of Josep Maria Bartomeu.
